Practise reading aloud these sentences : I. Pronunciation Look at the picture and answer the questions : What did the pupils do? They ( the pupils) gave their teacher some flowers .  It was the pupils who/ that gave their teacher some flowers. Structure: 1. Subject focus : It is/ was +subject + that (who) + verb+… ? II. Grammar : Cleft sentences Look at the picture and answer the questions : Who(m) did the pupils give some flowers ? The pupils gave the teacher some flowers.  It was the teacher that the pupils gave some flowers. 2. Object focus : Structure : It is/ was + object+ that + subject + verb+…. II. Grammar : Cleft sentences ?  It was on the school yard that the pupils gave the teacher some flowers. Look at the picture and answer the questions : Structure : II. Grammar : Cleft sentences ? Where did the pupils give the teacher some flowers ? The pupils gave the teacher some flowers on the school yard. 3. Adverbial focus : It is/was +adverbial phrase +that + subject+verb+ Exercise 1 : Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentence. 1. The boy visited his uncle last month. 1. It was the boy who/ that visited his uncle last month. 2. My mother bought me a present on my birthday. 2. It was my mother who / that bought me a present on my birthday. 3. Huong and Sandra sang together at the party. 3.  It was Huong and Sandra who/ that sang together at the party. Ex: The man gave her the book.  It was the man who gave her the book. Exercise 2: Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the objects of the verb. 1. The man is learning English. 1.  It was English that the man is learning. 2. The woman gave him the book. 2.  It was the book that the woman gave him. 3. She sent her friend the postcard. 3.  It was the postcard that she sent her friend. Ex: The boy hit the dog in the garden.  It was the dog that the boy hit in the garden. Exercise 3: Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the adverbial modifier of the sentence. 1. The boy hit the dog in the garden. 1.  It was in the garden that the boy hit the dog. 2. She made some cakes for tea. 2.  It was for tea that she made some cakes. 3. His father repaired the bicycle for him. 3.  It was for him that his father repaired the bicycle. Ex: She bought him a present at the shop.  It was at the shop that she bought him a present.
