Introduction • Marriageanddivorce are very important to one’s life, not only to the couple involved but also for both families. • The process of marriage in Vietnam (an Asian country) and America (a Western country) is different from each other. Anddivorce is, too. II. American culture In US, parents do not arrange marriages for their children. Young people are expected to find a husband or wife on their own; their parents do not usually help them. Vietnamese culture A Vietnamese engagement ceremony is an important one before the wedding which involves both families. American culture It is not necessary to ask permission of couple's parent about their engagement ceremony . Vietnamese culture For the reason I have said above, so marriage plans are decided by parents of both parties. As a rule of the custom, the marriage of a couple completely depends on the decision of the man's family. American culture In fact, parents are frequently not told of marriage plans until the couple has decided to marry. This means that parents have little control, and generally not much influence , over whom their children marry. Vietnamese culture Vietnamese couple live in harmony together by deeply feeling between husband and wife. American culture Happiness is based primarily on companionship. The majority of American women value companionship as the most important part of marriage. Vietnamese culture The divorce rate in Vietnam is not high compared to other countries. About 0.4 percent for men and 1.3 per cent for women between the age of 15 and 49. The actual number of divorces has risen significantly. American culture The USA has one of the highest divorce rates in the world. A divorce is easy to obtain in most parts of the United States.
