METHOD OF DOING RELATIVE CLAUSES

RELATIVE CLAUSES WHO/ WHICH/ THAT Case 1: Joining two sentences together using a relative pronoun Step 1: Both sentences should be about the same person or thing In the first sentence the noun is chose The pronoun used in the second (he, she, it, they …) The man is my father You met him yesterday Step 2: Now look at the second sentence and try to find out the pronoun that will be replaced by the relative pronoun In this case, it is the pronoun him As you can see the man is the subject of its verb Therefore we use a subject relative pronoun like who/ whom or that to replace it => The man is my father You met whom yesterday The next step is to rewrite the second sentence with the relative pronoun and put it in the beginning of the sentences Now you get the relative clause => The man is my father whom you met yesterday Step 3: Now we have to insert this relative clause into the first sentence The relative clause should go immediately after the noun it refers to In this case, it refers to the noun the man Therefore, we put it immediately after the man => The man whom you met yesterday is my father Case 2: Filling in the blank with a suitable relative pronoun Look at noun in the first sentence and try to find out the pronoun that will be replaced by the relative pronoun Which/ that: things Example: The book …… is read …… (which/ that) Who/ that: people Example: She is the girl …… has a long hair …… (who/ that) Why (= for which): REASON, CAUSE The reason …… I’m phoning you is to ask your advice The reason why (= for which) I’m phoning you is to ask your advice When (= on/ at/ in which): time - It is used in the modifying clause instead of the object noun I’ll never forget the day…… I met => I’ll never forget the day when (= on which) I met you Where (= at/ in/ from/ on which): place - It is used to join modifying clause and is also known as location-relative pronoun The building …… he lives is very old => The building where (= in which) he lives is very old Note: Why, When, Where is replaced an object pronoun Do you know the city _ is near here ? (omitted subject => which/ that) => Do you know the city which/ that is near here?
