Review for Nursing and Health Professions with Step-byStep Solutions explains the math needed for basic calculations and provides practice problems to help individuals wishing to enter a nursing or health profession field strengthen their math skills For prospective students, the book provides an excellent review for the math section of any nursing or health profession entrance test Davis’s Basic Math Review for Nursing and Health Professions with Step-byStep Solutions presents basic skills in a logical mathematical order so users can easily progress to more advanced skills For best results, users should work the practice problems and tests in this book without using a calculator because calculators are not allowed on many of the entrance tests The more practice problems worked, the faster and more accurate computations become Because health care providers often encounter a range of topics requiring math computations—household measures, metric measures, and temperature conversions also are included in this book Features of Davis’s Basic Math Review for Nursing and Health Professions with Step-by-Step Solutions: • A pretest in each chapter helps you determine where to focus your review Within each pretest is a section number telling you where to find an explanation for that particular skill plus practice problems • Key Terms are presented in color and are explained in an easy-toread manner • Math-skill explanations with example problems are worked step by step to help you understand the skills required • Practice problems help you master each math skill • End of chapter tests help you check your progress as you work through the book • Comprehensive practice tests also help you check for mastery of basic math skills and health care specific applications ix 5659_ FM_i-xx.indd ix 15/11/16 11:59 AM STEP Simplify the fractions Now you have solved for positive x x = 80 The answer is x = 80 Your work should look like this on paper -x -14 + = -14 - =- -x = -20 -20 -x • = -20 • 41 -x -80 = -1 -1 x = 80 To check the answer, substitute 80 for x in the original equation ⎛ -80⎞ -14 ⎜⎝ ⎟⎠ + = -14 (-20) + = -14 -14 -14 -14 = -14 -14 ✔ The answer checks Placement of the Negative Sign in Fractions Fractions that contain a negative sign may appear in different ways The fractions -2 2 , , and -3 all have the same meaning A negative frac- tion in best mathematical form is written with the negative sign in front of the fraction, - chapter 2056_06_137-166.indd 151 Equations 151 11/5/09 11:50:33 AM Example 4: −2x + 24 = 29 -2x + 24 = 29 - 24 = review: • dealing with more than one variable • collecting like terms in equations Dealing with More Than One Variable All of the equations up to this point have contained only one variable However, a variable may occur two or more times in an equation It may be repeated on the same side of the equation or appear on both sides of the equation The following equations have the same variable on both sides: -x - = -13x 4y + = 7(y + 1) 3(a + 22) = 3(4a + 10) The following equations have the same variable repeated on one or both sides of the equation: + x - 2x + 3x - 4x = 3x + -7x 7y + 2(2y - 1) = -(4y + 5) Collecting Like Terms in Equations If an equation has more than one variable term or number on one or both sides of the equal sign, you must collect like terms before moving letters and numbers from one side of the equal sign to the other For example: x + 3x + = -x + - (before like terms have been collected) 4x + = -x - (after like terms have been collected) After like terms have been collected, move letters to the left side of the equation Then move numbers to the right side of the equation, so the answer is in best form These are the steps for solving an equation that contains more than one variable Clear parentheses on one or both sides by using the distributive property (See Section 5.5, The Distributive Property, page 132.) Collect like terms on each side of the equation Move letters to the left side of the equation Add or subtract chapter 2056_06_137-166.indd 155 Equations 155 11/5/09 11:50:41 AM Move numbers to the right side of the equation Add or subtract Multiply or divide as needed Make certain you have solved for positive x Tip: You may not need all eight steps to solve every equation; however, you should consider all the steps If a step is not needed, proceed to the next step Example 1: 3n − = −2n −2n STEP Observe that there are no parentheses to clear 3n - = -2n STEP Notice that there are no like terms to collect −2n to the left side of the equation STEP Move −2n by adding 2n to both sides −2n + 2n = STEP Add the columns Note: −2n Be sure to write the in that column STEP Move the number to the right side of the equation by adding to both sides +2n = +2n 5n - = + = +5 STEP Add the columns 5n = STEP Divide both sides of the equation by 5n = 5 1 STEP Reduce the fractions and be sure you have solved for positive n The answer is n = 156 5n = 51 n=1 part Basic Math Skills 2056_06_137-166.indd 156 11/5/09 11:50:42 AM Your work should look like this on paper 3n - = 7x + 12 STEP Notice that there are no like terms to collect STEP Move −7x −7x to the left side of the equation by subtracting 7x from both sides STEP Add the columns STEP Move the number −9 −9 to the right side of the equation by adding to both sides STEP Add the columns -7x = -7x -3x - = 12 + = +9 -3x = 21 chapter 2056_06_137-166.indd 157 Equations 157 11/5/09 11:50:42 AM STEP Divide both sides of the equation by −3 −3 STEP Reduce the fractions and be sure you have solved for positive x −7 The answer is x = − -3x 21 = -3 -3 -3 x 21 = -
