1 Art of Leadership & Motivation HRM – 760 Lecture ­ 5 FACILITATOR Prof Dr Mohammad Majid Mahmood What Makes People Listen to Us?  Relationships: People listen to us because of who we know  Sacrifice: People listen to us because of what we have suffered  Character: People listen to us because of our integrity  Insight: People listen to us because of what we know  Transparency: People listen to us because we are transparent  Experience: People listen to us because we’ve succeeded in the past  Competence: People listen to us because of our abilities and expertise  Courage: People listen to us when we demonstrate courage  Value: People listen to us because we make them feel that they are important to us The wrong action at the wrong time leads to disaster The right action at the wrong time brings resistance The wrong action at the right time is a mistake The right action at the right time results in success THE 21 INDISPENSABLE LEADERSHIP LAWS by John Maxwell 8  Character is More than Talk  Your character determines who you are  Who you are determines what you see  What you see determines what you  Character is a Choice  We have no control over a lot of things in life  But we choose our character In fact, we create it every time we make choices 9  Character Brings Lasting Success with People  Followers not trust leaders whose character they know to be flawed, and they will not continue following them  Leaders Cannot Rise Above the Limitations of their Character  Have you ever seen highly talented people suddenly fall apart when they achieved a certain level of success?  Face the music  The beginning of character building comes when you face your flaws, apologize, and deal with the consequences of your actions 10 10  To improve your problem solving, the following:        Look for trouble Time – spend time to discover the real issue Exposure – find out what others have done Assistance – have your team study all angles Creativity – brainstorm multiple solutions Hit It – implement the best solution Surround yourself with problem solvers 27 28  Take a look at the following characteristics of people who embrace responsibility:  They get the job done  They are willing to go the extra mile  They are driven by excellence  They produce regardless of the situation 29  Insecure traits: leaders have several common  They don’t provide security for others  They take more from people than they give  To improve your security, the following:  Get some help 30  If you want to become a leader for whom selfdiscipline is an asset, follow these action points:       Develop and follow your priorities Make a disciplined lifestyle Challenge your excuses Remove rewards until the job is done Stay focused on results To improve your self-discipline the following:  Sort out your priorities  Get rid of excuses 31  A true servant leader:  Puts others ahead of his own agenda  The Law of Empowerment says that only secure leaders give power to others It’s also true that only secure leaders exhibit servanthood  Is not position-conscious 32  Vision starts within  Vision meets others’ needs  Vision helps you gather resources 33  Where does vision come from?
