References The Changing Morphology of the Asia-Pacific Region The term 'country' is being used somewhat loosely for expositional convenience, although not all the Asia-Pacific countries qualify for it 'Korea' without exception stands for the Republic of Korea That is, people's determination to pull their country up by its boot-straps Little, I M D., T Scitovsky and M Scott (1990) Industry and Trade in Some Developing Countries: A Comparative Study, New York: Oxford University Press From Economic Integration to Economic Co-operation: Institutional Initiatives The latest stage in European integration was marked on February 1992 with the signing of the Maastricht Treaty on European Union Consequently the title European Econonlic Community (EC) underwent a change and European Union (EU) is currently used Somewhat tactlessly worded because it sounds like the guilt-ridden and discredited concept of the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere of the interwar and wartime periods Under the chairmanship of Professor Gunal Kansu, the Kansu report was jointly sponsored by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Economic Commission for Asia and Far East, Food and Agriculture Organisation and the UN Conference on Trade and Development He made this call while addressing the Korean Business Association, in Seoul, in January 1989 Therefore the APEC is said to have emanated from the Hawke initiative This list of basic principles was set out in the Chairman's summary of the first APEC meeting held in November 1989 in Canberra The Bangkok declaration talks at length about it See the Bangkok Declaration, Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation, September 1992 The Ascension of the Japanese Economy to Pre-eminence It was named after the first mythical Emperor of Japan Iwato was the cave in which the goddess of the sun, Amaterasu, hid because she was offended by the misdeeds of her younger brother It was named after the god who created the Japanese archipelago by dipping his spear in the sea See my book The Yen Appreciation and the International Economy, London: Macmillan 1993 For detailed treatment see Das (1993) Chapter 265 266 10 The Asia Pacific Economies GATT reported in the Nikkei Weekly, 25 April 1992 Market-led Integration in the Asia-Pacific Region An earlier study than Yamazawa's 1987 study was conducted under the aegis of the Institute of Developing Economies, and yielded similar results This was published in the December 1983 issue of the Developing Economies See Yamazawa et aL, 1983 Undercurrents of Integration Consensus regarding the creation of AFTA was reached between the ASEAN economies during their summit meeting in January 1991 Estimated by Morgan Stanley Asia Published in Far Eastern Economic Review, 24 September 1992, p 58 Regionalism versus Multilateralism: The Asia-Pacific Penchant The pact was signed on October 1992 It must be ratified by each nation's legislature to take effect on January 1994 The USA, Canada and
