Let’s explore them! Story Let’s play a game! I spy with my little eye something beginning with B B? Ha ha! Blue! It’s me! A BLUE monster! My turn I smell with my little nose something beginning with P I touch with my little hands some thing beginning with F Ha ha! A poo! My turn! F F F? Fur! That’s my fur! My monster furry tail I hear with my big ears something beginning with .M Quick! Let’s run, that’s the ice-cream van! Music! We taste with our little tongues, something beginning with Y Y for yummy! It’s so good to have all these senses! D Questions with: z m, z m & z What are Senses? m What’s this green thing on the table? Hey dudes! Messy invited me over - have you seen him? Story by Dr Sophie and illustrations by Alex Barrow Messy was in the kitchen earlier Hmm, I’m not sure What are ‘senses’? Let’s use our senses to find out what it is That’s a good question! So our senses will help us find out what this green thing is on the table? Story The main senses are: taste, smell, hearing, sight and touch Zoom can you show us how we use our senses please? Taste my noodles Smell the sea Hear the accordion See my magazine Feel/touch my cat YES! Let’s be detectives and use our senses to investigate it red What colour is it? It’s green! green You used your eye SIGHT to see the colour blue yellow It’s soft! What does it feel like? soft You used your hands to TOUCH it to find out how it feels! furry smooth What does it smell like? sweet smokey socks 10 Eurgh! It smells like old SOCKS! You used your nose to SMELL it! Taste experiment TASTE tongue TOUCH skin SMELL nose Try this test to discover how many different senses you use when you eat your food Check in case of allergies! You will need: a blindfold Foods such as peas, sweet corn, grapes, cherry tomatoes, dried fruit and mixed nuts Gather your food together and then ask an adult to help you put on a blindfold Now taste it Can you guess what it is? How does smell and touch help you when you can’t see? Similar shaped objects can be confusing to tell apart Now try these comparisons: 36 Next, the adult gives you one of the foods You can feel it in your hand first OR Tomato Pea Grape OR sweet corn TASTE tongue Experiment Taste experiment SEE eye You will need: some toothpicks, a pencil and paper Foods of similar colour such as peeled cucumber, apple, pear, banana, cooked potato and cheese Ask a grown-up to help you chop the food into similar sized cubes Label each one so you know which is which Now pinch your nose and try the first cube Write down what you think it is Try another until they’re all finished Put all the cubes on a tray and place the labels face down next to each one Now you can turn over the pieces of paper and see how many you got right! To taste and recognise what we eat, we often use our sense of touch, eyes and especially our noses! Taste is not just on the tongue! 37 Messy’s sock experiment Using touch and sound, help Messy and Grumpyko guess what’s hidden inside the socks! You will need: old socks Some mixed objects: bubble wrap lego bricks toys rice marbles pasta sweets Place your chosen objects on a table or on the floor in front of you 38 Put a different group of objects in each sock Leave an example of each object out to help when they are matched later Tie the end of each filled sock with an elastic band to stop the objects falling out Mix up all the socks and get a friend to guess what’s inside each one by touching and shaking them TOUCH skin Touch and squeeze! Experiment Guess what’s inside! HEAR ear Jingle ‘n’ jangle! Kaz is using her senses to find her way to the concert Follow the sounds, smells and sights! answers p.46 43 Grandma Lita’s magic hot chocolate Now you’ve read Grandma Lita’s story, let’s make her famous hot chocolate Mmmm perfect for a cold winter day! The chocolate sticks also make great gifts when wrapped in a little tissue paper or clear film bag Makes around 6-8 hot chocolate sticks You will need: An ice cube tray A bar of dark chocolate A bar of milk chocolate A bar of white chocolate Lolly sticks Mini marshmallows How to: 44 Break up the bars of milk and dark chocolate into smaller pieces and place in a bowl Pop the bowl of chocolate in the microwave for 30 seconds and give it a stir to make sure it’s melted Get an adult to help you chop up the white chocolate into little pieces Sprinkle some of it in the bottom of your ice cube tray Pour the melted chocolate into the ice cube tray and sprinkle the top with marshmallows and more white chocolate bits Stick a lolly stick in the middle of each chocolate cube Leave the tray to set for a few hours in the fridge Gently squeeze the ice cube tray until the chocolate sticks come out Now you’re ready to make hot chocolate! To make your hot chocolate: cup of hot milk chocolate stick stir until melted Recipe Mmmm enjoy! 45 Walk in the Park Board game TOUCH skin Finish Follow Kaz as she walks through the park on a journey of senses! You will need: SMELL nose Some counters A die How to play: Put your counters on the start and take it in turns to roll the die When you land on an icon, find the matching sense This might move you ahead OR behind For example if you land on: TOUCH skin SEE eye jump to TASTE tongue jump to TOUCH skin First one to the finish, wins! 46 Start SMELL nose SMELL nose SEE eye HEAR ear TASTE tongue TOUCH skin TASTE tongue TASTE tongue SEE eye HEAR ear 47 OKIDO POST Welcome OKIDO readers!
