I’ve seen and heard of a few, but it would be cool to get them all directly from you OK, let’s see how many I can remember! • Bench press: 500 x • Dumbbell bench press – flat: 200 x 12; incline – 200 x 10 • Incline barbell press: 455 x 8-10 (not sure how many I got) • Military press: 315 x 12 (I never really tried going heavier – always did these for sets of 12) • Seated dumbbell press: 170 x (that felt heavy!) • Squat: 800 x 1, 700 x • Front squat: 585 x 10 (took me a lile while to figure out I couldn’t go too fast because the bar would bend too much) • Leg press: 2,300 x (used almost every plate in the gym, and Metroflex has a lot of plates) • Deadliſt: 800 x 2, 675 x • Barbell row: 495 x 12, 585 x • Dumbbell row: 300 x (this was at a gym in Hawaii back in 1997, and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be The dumbbell was made of some very dense pe of steel so it wasn’t overly long and awkward) • Barbell curl: 225 x • Dumbbell curl: 100 x 7-8 (people sometimes think I must have the strongest biceps in the world because they’re so big and because my back is so strong, but really my biceps aren’t that strong) • Skull-crushers: 225 x 10 • Weighted dips: bodyweight (320) plus 90 = 410 x 12 Training Days a Week Not Enough I would love to hear your opinion on three days per week training versus five to six days per week for a natural athlete As a natural trainer who wants to compete eventually when I have the size, I know I need more recovery time I want to make the most of my physique and I know you have previous experience training naturally, so your advice would be greatly appreciated, Big Ron! I don’t care if you’re natural or not, three days a week is not enough training to build the physique of a bodybuilder That’s more like what some guy who works 70 hours a week in an office who barely has time to ever get to the gym would to try and stay in some kind of shape I mean, it’s better than nothing But even when I was natural, I still trained the same way I did later on— six days on, one day off (Sunday) Four days a week is a minimum, and five is probably even better if you’re a young guy trying to grow The muscles need to be worked hard and often to become much bigger and stronger, and three days a week won’t cut it Recovery is important of course, so be sure you get plenty of sleep and eat five to six good meals a day plus a shake or two Up the Protein to Make Gains How much you estimate your food intake increased from your early days as a pro competing at 220, to the later years when you were nearly 300 pounds on stage? Was it as much as we would expect, less, or more? My carbs didn’t go up a whole lot, but my protein sure did Back in my early days as a pro I was eating about 300-350 grams of protein a day The more I learned about nutrition, the more I realized how important protein was for making gains By about 2002-2005 when I was at my biggest, I was taking in about 600 grams of protein a day Considering I was weighing 320-330 pounds in the off-season, that really wasn’t excessive It was still less than grams per pound of bodyweight “I never put nothing in my arms, never had to I had 21-inch arms before I ever even touched a drug Plus, I was scared to stick a needle in there.” Questions About PEDs? Talk to Your Doctor Ronnie, you ever get annoyed in seminars when people ask questions that really shouldn’t be asked in public, such as about performance enhancing substances? How you handle these without getting angry? It can get annoying, but in most cases I think they just feel like this is their only chance to get that information I can’t talk too much about that stuff of course, because it’s not legal in most places and also because, who am I to be giving out what’s really medical advice? I tell them to talk to their doctor! Do you see this as a big problem these days in the pro ranks? Yeah, it was going on in the ‘90s Flex was kind of obvious about the way he did it around the time I started winning my first couple of Mr Olympia titles All of a sudden, his shoulders and arms got all swole up I think Nasser was doing it too One time he had pus running out of his rear delts on stage I never put nothing in my arms, never had to I had 21-inch arms before I ever even touched a drug Plus, I was scared to stick a needle in there The glutes were OK and the shoulders were just another place to use so you could rotate sites, but the idea of needle going deep into my biceps or triceps? Ouch! I get that same feeling like guys when they think about where a doctor cuts you for a vasectomy These days, I see a lot more of that and the guys go overboard looking all lumpy and bumpy The worst thing is when they get a bruise or the site gets inflamed and shiny right before a show Maybe they it 19 times and it’s fine, the muscle just looks fuller, and then that 20th time their luck runs out and they go on stage looking like a fool I don’t support that look one bit It looks fake and stupid MD 111 CLASSIC TRAINING CAMP By IFBB Classic Physique Pro Chris Bumstead The Weight Belt Debate To Wear or Not to Wear? I wear a belt when I train, for a couple of reasons One is for the same reason a lot of guys do— it gives you an instant X-frame by making your waist look smaller and making your shoulders look juicy That’s great for videos or photos But the main reason is spinal support Some people even claim wearing a lifting belt makes your waist shrink I’m not sure about that I think wearing a belt forces you to hold your stomach in and control your breathing The belt makes it uncomfortable to relax your stomach and let it hang, which in turn helps you get better mind-muscle connection over that area For those who compete, it’s critical to hold your stomach in the entire time you’re on stage This gives you the illusion of a smaller waist Most guys can’t keep their gut sucked in for very long, which is why they end up showing a “bubble gut” when it’s relaxed I use two different types of belts The first is the average, everyday belt that’s thinner in front and wider in back I have a Cardillo custom belt like this, and use it for exercises like barbell rows or seated military presses My other belt is a much thicker Inzer powerlifting belt that closes with a steel lever That one is the same width all around The first few times you wear a belt like this, it will hurt, and you might even get a little bruising from the edges of it digging into you The whole point is to create intra-abdominal pressure so that your spine is protected from the inside and outside I always use this belt for heavy squats and deadlifts That means I don’t put it on until I get to the heaviest weights For example, if I am going to finish with six plates a side on the deadlift, I don’t start using the belt until my last two sets with five and six plates With all that said, I don’t think it’s mandatory to wear a belt when you train If you’ve never worn one for years and you’re doing fine, don’t bother starting now Also, if you’re an athlete and need a lot of core strength, don’t wear a belt unless you’re able to wear one playing your sport I also wouldn’t bother wearing a belt if you think it’s going to shrink your waist I never saw any difference, and I’ve had periods of as long as a year when I didn’t wear a belt Your waist size is mainly a result of your genetics, though you can make it bigger by building up your obliques “Wearing a belt forces you to hold your stomach in and control your breathing The belt makes it uncomfortable to relax your stomach and let it hang, which in turn helps you get better mind-muscle connection over that area.” 112 MD musculardevelopment.com March 2019 Training Legs in Workouts What is your current split, and is there any special reason it’s arranged the way it is? This is what I am doing at the moment: Day 1: Quads Day 2: Chest Day 3: Back Day 4: OFF Day 5: Hams Day 6: Delts and arms Day 7: OFF I wanted to hit every body part once a week plus give myself two full days off from weights In addition to working arms on their own day, I usually a little bit for triceps with chest, and some biceps after back That’s because my arms suck and they need to grow The biggest change here from what I’ve been doing until now was splitting up legs into two different workouts for quads and hams It’s the best decision I ever made Now I realize my hamstrings were never getting the best workouts they could have had that whole time I used to stress out about leg day, because it was such a long and demanding workout Your legs are half of your body; why would you all that in one session? I Have What It Takes Not sure if you caught Sergio Oliva Jr.’s interview with Giles Thomas, but when asked who he believed would become the next Mr Olympia champion, he said he believed it would be either you or Luke Sandoe His reasoning was that so many times, the guys we all think are next in line never make it, while we’ve seen men like Ronnie and Jay start off placing badly at the Olympia yet go on to win the title What are your thoughts on his theory? One thing I like about Sergio is that he speaks his mind and says what he thinks, even if people disagree with him We all want to be Mr Olympia That’s the goal that drives us, and what we train for every day Do I have what it takes? I hope so I believe I have one of the closest physique packages to Shawn Rhoden, if that’s what they’re going for: small waist, round muscle bellies, and consistent condition Mr Olympia is also about more than just the physique You need to represent the sport well and get more people interested in it I’m a normal, down-to-earth guy who just 114 MD loves banging weights Luckily, I was gifted to grow and look a certain way I believe I can be Mr Olympia, and there are other guys out there with that potential too like Luke, Brandon Curry and Josh Lenartowicz Anyone can win on that day It’s up to the judges I just hope I get the chance to fulfill my dream of being Mr Olympia one day Heavy Squats: It’s a Mind Game I see you doing very heavy squats, and have two questions about that please Do you normally squats first on leg day, or at least in the early part of the workout, or later toward the end? And how much warming up you before you get under 500 or 600 pounds? I don’t always squat first, but I go as heavy as I can regardless If they are done first, I can get seven plates a side, or 675, for six to eight reps If squats are my third or fourth quad movement on that day, I will get 585 for 11 reps I try to keep it consistent, because strength is more of a mind game than anything else Every leg session of mine has to be balls to the wall, where I leave the gym on my ass or on my knees I owe that to myself and everyone who believes in me As far as warming up, I plenty of it To finish with seven plates I will first x 10 reps, two, three and four plates for 10, then five and six plates for eight reps each before hitting that 675 pounds I never go lower than six to eight reps because the muscles need to be put under tension to grow Loading up the bar with so much weight that you can only get one or two reps does fuck-all for your legs If You’re Sick, Don’t Train What are your thoughts on training when you’re sick? How you decide when you’re better off staying home and resting? In the colder months, bugs are always going around and you’re bound to get sick sooner or later You can’t give 100 percent in the gym when you’re sick, so stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids If your body is trying to fight off an infection, it doesn’t have the resources to train hard and recover from musculardevelopment.com March 2019 “Strength is more of a mind game than anything else Every leg session of mine has to be balls to the wall, where I leave the gym on my ass or on my knees.” the workout anyway Plus, you don’t want to get other people at your gym sick too Then you’ve messed up someone else’s gains! In past interviews, you’ve said that you didn’t get serious about bodybuilding until you stopped going out drinking on weekends Does that mean we can’t have a few drinks every now and then or else we won’t make any gains? There’s drinking, and then there’s drinking I used to get shit-faced every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night Now I only drink like that every once in a blue moon on a special occasion, though I will enjoy a couple of glasses of wine at home on weekends when I’m not in prep I won’t tell you not to drink, because it’s a big part of social life for a lot of guys You need to decide what’s acceptable You should know in your heart what’s too much If you’re missing a lot of meals and waking up feeling like dogshit, you need to cut back You won’t be making any real progress with your physique if you’re treating your body like that on any regular basis Too Busy to Eat? Try a ‘Steak in a Shake’ You seem like a busy man, especially now that you own your own gym How stay on schedule with your meals? And would you recommend outdoor cardio to those who don’t have a background in track, or suggest they stick with the usual machines for cardio in the gym? I grew up playing football and running track, so I like to get out on the track and run rather than have the treadmill run for me There’s something about feeling the track under my feet that nothing can replace I also feel you get a certain amount of development and separation from outdoor sprints that you won’t get in the gym I was convinced of that recently when I went out to the track and did sprints for the first time in many months The next day and for a couple of days after that, I was sore in muscles I hadn’t been sore in for at least that long As a competitor, you should want maximum development in your lower body If you decide to try it, be very sure to start off slowly! Warm up with jogging and stretches and hold off on sprinting at an allout speed until you’ve had at least a couple of sessions to get the hang of it While we’re on the subject, boxing or kickboxing training are both also excellent forms of cardio A lot of bodybuilders are afraid to anything outside our little world, but in my experience, it only helps your physique “I like to get out on the track and run rather than have the treadmill run for me You get a certain amount of development and separation from outdoor sprints that you won’t get in the gym.” Training Update As of January of 2019, I’m still giving my body a chance to fully recuperate and heal up any nagging aches and pains My method for this is to train with higher intensity one day, and then take it easier the next I’m still training six days a week, but only three of those days are really demanding I’m pleased to see that I’ve definitely added some new muscle mass My weight right now is 205, but I’m leaner at this weight than I’ve ever been before in my life That should make things really interesting later this year when it’s time for me to diet down to 180 for the Olympia! As of now I’m planning on doing much of my prep once again at Oxygen Gym in Kuwait I love LA and I’m not about to move to Kuwait, but I have greater focus over there and get in shape faster It certainly helps that the gym is about 10 steps away from where Bader has me staying when I’m there So I don’t need a loaner Lambo to get around, but I wouldn’t say no if one was offered to me! Work Ethic Let me start off by saying I’m super happy to have this column and am really hoping to give back a little of what I’ve gotten from the bodybuilding industry. This column isn’t going to be controversial, negative or disrespectful That approach might make things more interesting, but it doesn’t really help us grow as individuals— in or out of the gym I’m about keeping things positive We’re going to focus on the things you can control, like work ethic and nutrition Hopefully some of what I share can help you reach your goals, even if one of them is the Olympia stage TRAIN YOUR WORK ETHIC It’s been said that I don’t have the best structure or genetics So, what’s my secret? I have a tremendous work ethic. It’s not exclusive to bodybuilding I apply an “all in” attitude to everything in my life This includes my family, which is most important to me, and my business However, it seems like work ethic— that innate belief that hard work is a large part of the reward— is a dying quality. I see people spending more time talking about their dreams than applying elbow grease to make their dreams a reality or developing a plan to get them started. They’re waiting for things to fall into their lap instead of aggressively seeking what they want, whether that’s a better physique, a better relationship, or a better career. You need to train your work ethic just like it’s another muscle group Here are some strategies I used to develop my work ethic and make sure that I’m kicking ass, and not the other way around BE PURPOSEFUL Make a plan and execute it. Having a solid plan allows you to minimize distractions and maximize productivity in the gym. I once read that Dorian Yates used to sit in his office and visualize his exercises, sets, reps and even the weight he was going to use! The point is that you need to be mentally prepared to give your most to every workout. So, if you don’t already so, write down your plan before every workout Make sure you include strategies to challenge yourself, like drop sets, supersets, isolation holds, etc Then, push yourself and hold yourself accountable. To this day, I never start a workout without a plan in place. BE CONSISTENT Before I started bodybuilding, I read Jay Cutler’s CEO Muscle and learned how meticulous and purposeful he was about training and nutrition So, like Jay, I noted every detail of my day In addition to my workouts, I logged everything I ate down to the calorie. I’m confident that being conscientious, having a desire to be detailed and organized, led to consistency And consistency and reliability are important contributors to work ethic No, you can’t control everything. But you can be consistent with the things you can control. administration and lifestyles changes to naturally normalize estrogen levels without the harmful effects of AIs The demonization of estrogen in TRT patients is rebutted in a series of video interviews
