perfect E30 M3 and then another seven modding the one he bought, a lot of Raymond Khublal’s life has revolved around the iconic classic but, as the stunning end product proves, it was time incredibly well spent Words: Elizabeth de Latour Photos: Jonathan DeHate PERFORMANCE BMW T he E30 M3 is a car that we’re never going to get bored of featuring or writing about and we hope it’s car that owners never stop modding, because there are few things finer in this world than a perfectly-modded E30 M3 It’s another one of BMW’s designs that really needs very little work to get the best from it, but picking the right mods MACHINE is essential and you need to have a keen eye and impeccable taste to ensure that you don’t make a mess of things Just look at Raymond Khublal’s E30 M3 – it’s a stunning machine that’s been treated to the perfect selection of mods to make it at once individual and aggressive; it’s just oozing sheer retro goodness and this is a car that’s very easy to get excited about For Raymond, cars have been a passion for many years, as he explains; “I have been interested in cars in general since I can remember, particularly the E30 model, as my mother had a 1987 E30 325i when I was growing up and I always loved the classic lines and quad headlights Combing through the Bavarian autosport magazines growing up, I fell in love with the E30 M3 and it has been my dream car ever since,” so we’d say he had a pretty good motoring upbringing and it led to him owning a number of BMWs over the years These have included a 1986 Euro E30, a 1984 E30 M3 replica and a 1997 E36 M3 Saloon and Raymond’s no stranger to modding, either; “My Euro E30 was modified with HRE 525 wheels, suspension, Steel grey metallic respray and a full M Tech package My E36 was a daily and it had suspension, Vaders and M Roadster wheels,” he says “My first BMW was the 1984 E30 325i, which I was going to try to an M3 conversion on; it ended up having too much rust so I got rid of it and continued my hunt to find the car I have now,” and we reckon it was for the best that conversion didn’t work out, because this is so much better in every way Finding the right M3 was by no means easy, though, and this has been a serious undertaking that’s occupied a significant portion of Raymond’s life “After searching for a good E30 M3 at a decent price and not finding one, then acquiring and getting rid of my E30 M3 replica, I was determined to find an E30 M3 and kept on the hunt until it was found All in all, I was looking for over 10 years for the right one,” he says, and that’s some dedication “My cousin actually found this one for me in another state – I purchased it right away and had it shipped to me, just from seeing the pictures It was in good shape but had a two-tone respray that I was not fond of, but no rust The interior was mint and it had the original S14 motor – those were the main things I was after It also helped that it was the last year made, one of 272 produced for the 1991 model year,” and we can only imagine how satisfying it must have been to finally get his hands on the car he’d been wanting to own for so long “My plan was to get a respray, fit laughs, but he’s definitely not complaining So, let’s kick things off by talking about aesthetics because Raymond’s first job was to sort out that horrible-sounding twotone paint job but, funnily enough, he’s almost done the same sort of thing himself anyway… Now, take a good, long look at the pictures of this M3 and you will realise that all is not as it seems because it’s been treated to a matt paint job, but only on the bottom half, with the top half of the car finished in original gloss Diamond black It’s definitely different, but we like it and while this wasn’t Raymond’s end goal for the car’s looks, he’s also grown to love it and has no plans to change it anytime soon “I decided to the flat black as a temporary paint job until I could the full engine/windows out respray in the original Diamond black finish The look really stuck with me and its been on the car for a number of years; it looks very aggressive and complements the boxy lines of the car,” he says and we have to agree Obviously it’s not going to be for everyone, but It is for Raymond, which is all that really matters, and it looks good Of course, the car’s overall appearance has been significantly enhanced with a rather tasty selection of styling mods and while they are subtle and largely OEM additions, they really an awesome job of giving this E30 M3 some additional muscle and presence Starting off at the front we have that Evo front lip spoiler, which is joined by Euro crosshair headlights, French fog lights for that retro yellow tint, and Euro grilles Moving down the car you’ll spot the AC Schnitzer mirrors and at the back sits the magnificent Sport Evo spoiler with Front seats have been reupholstered adjustable Gurney flap Then there are further additions that it’s easy to miss, like the Evo bonnet seals, the Startec tinted rear lights and the Euro towing eye covers There’s a lot of attention to detail with these mods and they all work together so well, with the end result being one devastatingly good-looking E30 M3, and Raymond has really done a fantastic job on this car So we’ve established that this is a very nice M3 but without the right wheels and the drop to go with them, all those styling touches would be for naught but, as you can clearly see, Raymond has paid plenty of attention to both these areas Let’s talk wheels first because his choice for the M3 bucks the usual trend of cross-spokes or something a little retro, and while the CCWs he’s chosen have that multi-spoke look that works so very well with the E30’s styling, they put a twist on it that really makes them stand out “The car originally came with AC Schnitzer Type II Racing wheels,” explains Raymond, “they were awesome but a bit too common for me I sold those and built the set of CCW Classics that are on the car now as I wanted a 17” wheel, but 16” wheels are really the best-looking aesthetically for this car (in my opinion) With the 17s I got with a stepped lip, it still utilizes 16” faces so aesthetically it doesn’t look like too large of a wheel I always liked the CCW Classics – with the factory being a short drive away from my home and building the wheel from scratch the way I wanted it, it was a no-brainer.” His decision to go with the stepped lips on the CCWs was a really good one because, as he says, that allows them to retain the 16” faces and so the wheels look a lot smaller We have no size preference when it comes to E30s, they can even look good on the right 18s, but we agree that, generally speaking, smaller wheels tend to suit the classics that much better We also love the fact that he’s made the conscious decision to go for something different for his wheel choice and it’s really paid off Enhancing the appeal of those CCW splits is the serious drop that has been applied and the way this car sits, the stance of it, really gives it a massive boost in terms of aesthetics “I went with the tried and true Ground Control coilovers with Koni adjustable struts,” says Raymond “The car also has Suspension Technique anti-roll bars front and rear with reinforced mounting points, upgraded end links and bushes I also installed a HIK severe duty front skid plate tied to the frame rails via a roll bar hoop – this has saved my oil pan countless times,” he grins and we’re not surprised he needed that considering how low his M3 sits, but it’s absolutely worth it Sticking with aesthetics, the interior is another area where Raymond has put in a lot of work and, as with the rest of the car, there are plenty of individual touches that really set it apart “I wanted to keep it OEM but go for a bit of customization and practicality,” he tells us “I decided to add E46 bits, like the centre console, armrest, illuminated gear knob, handbrake handle etc and then wrapped those, the dash and some other parts in suede with M stitching To tie it all in, I modified a set of E36 M3 Motorsport belts in red to finish it off as well as adding a custom audio system,” and that’s a seriously nice selection of upgrades, with some quite unusual additions The idea of mixing in some E46 components is not a common one, but it works really well here, while all that suede definitely adds a much more luxurious feel to the cabin and the M stitching delivers the perfect final flourish There’s loads more to enjoy in here, like the custom suede door card inserts, Evo door sills, leather door pulls and door trays and that retro Nardi steering wheel, and the interior is actually Raymond’s favourite part of the whole car “I love the M stitched dashboard and interior pieces, I love the way the interior looks every time I get behind the wheel,” he smiles and we don’t blame him as this is one seriously nice cabin Last, but not least, we come to the S14 that’s sitting under the bonnet; now, S14s tend not to get treated to much in the way of mods, which is understandable as a lot of people want to preserve this iconic with the tried and true Ground stance is sheer perfection WWW.PERFORMANCEBMWMAG.COM APRIL 2019 AC Schnitzer mirrors JL Audio amp engine and it’s also not the easiest motor in the world to mod, and while Raymond hasn’t done too much to this furious four-pot, he’s making plans for something very exciting … “I’ve powder coated the valve covers and intake manifold with M stripes, added a Samco silicone hose upgrade, a Supersprint exhaust, AFE intake filter and Shark chip It’s fun, but honestly still slow,” he says “As I am not a fan of swapping the S14 motor, next Crosshair headlights and French fogs 10 PERFORMANCE BMW Gorgeous CCW Classic 17s on the list is an RMS supercharger with supporting fuel, management and exhaust modifications, which will be installed by summer of this year,” and now we’re talking Supercharged S14s are something of a rarity, with most people simply opting to swap in a different engine completely, which can give you more power with less effort but very much changes the character of the car, and you lose a big part of what makes the M3 experience as intense and thrilling as it is The RMS supercharger will still give Raymond a high-revving S14 to enjoy, but there will be rather a lot more power to play with and, with the right supporting mods, he’s probably going to have somewhere around 350hp which is going to make this an extremely exciting machine to drive Raymond’s E30 M3 journey has not been a quick or easy one, but it has been time well spent After hunting for over 10 years for the right car, he’s spent another seven years modding it and he’s actually been hoarding parts since before he even bought the car, so this has been a very long-term project, but the awesome end result was more than worth the wait Owning an E30 M3 was a dream of Raymond’s for so long and he’s not squandered his time with the car and has worked damn hard to create his perfect machine It’s a real beauty, packed with some must-have mods along with a whole selection of really individual additions that make this car stand out in the best way possible Having spent so long on this build, and with that supercharger coming soon, you might think that Raymond is about to take a wellearned break and rest on his laurels for a bit, but that’s not how his brain works “Along with the supercharger I’ll be adding race pipes, fuel and engine management Maybe a different look with the paint before I pull the trigger on a full respray Eventually I would like to build a custom roll-cage setup for it and big brakes,” he says It’s clear there’s a lot more to come and he’s going to be busy with his M3 for a long time to come, and we get the feeling he couldn’t be happier about that ● F8x M3/4 BUYING AND TUNING GUIDE carbon bucket seats finished in Alcantara and Merino leather, an Alcantara steering wheel and white roll-cage It also received the OLED rear lights from the M4 GTS, carbon bonnet and titanium exhaust along with matt Orbit grey 19” and 20” wheels, carbon ceramic brakes and three-way coilovers In 2017 the M4 received a facelift, which added LED headlights as standard (added to the Saloon in March), 3D LED rear lights, new-look illuminated M4 emblems on the front seats and double stitching on the instrument panel The M3 and M4 CS were both launched in 2018 and sat between the Competition Package and GTS, delivering a more hardcore experience without going all-out and being completely unusable on a day-to-day basis The S55 was tweaked to 460hp with 443lb ft of torque and the model was equipped with a sports exhaust, M DCT gearbox, and the chassis setup was very similar to that of the Competition package but tweaked to be even more sporting Unique, 10-spoke forged wheels in Matt Orbit grey, measuring The mighty M4 GTS 19” up front and 20” at the rear, were fitted and the CS models received a whole host of carbon goodies including the vented bonnet, three-part front splitter, unique boot spoiler and diffuser Inside, there were Competition seats in black and Silverstone leather, Alcantara throughout the cabin including on the dashboard, centre console and handbrake lever and the sills also featured the M3 CS logo while standard equipment included Harman Kardon surround sound and the Icon Adaptive LED headlights The CS came as standard in Alpine white, while optional colours included San Marino blue metallic, Lime Rock grey metallic, Frozen Dark blue II metallic and black Sapphire metallic The final special model to be launched was the M4 Convertible 30 Jahre, which arrived in 2018 and was generously equipped It came with the Comp Pack, was available in Macau blue and Mandarin II – similar to Dakar yellow – colours, has High Gloss Shadow Line trim, 20s in Matt Orbit grey, two-tone full leather, carbon trim and 30 Jahre Edition lettering on the sills and headrests WHAT TO PAY While you can't ever really call any £20k+ car cheap, looking at how far M3/4 prices have dropped you can certainly call it good value for money and even a bit of a bargain, considering just how much performance you're getting for your money The cheapest M4s start at around £25,000 – for that you can expect around 70,000 miles, maybe DCT and not much in the way of options, but what a lot of car for your money M3s are a little more expensive – we found a manual with 75k on the clock for £26k but, realistically, you'll need to spend nearer £29,000 Once you're over the £30k threshold, mileages begin to drop considerably and for around £32,000 you can pick up a 35k mile example and at £36,000 mileages drop to around 20k and below For M4s, £30k will get you a car with under 50,000 on the clock and around £32,000 will get you an Approved Used car with under 30,000 miles The cheapest convertibles, meanwhile, start at around £30k and mileages are generally lower than those of coupés and saloons – you can pick up a manual M4 Cab with 6200 miles for £32,500, for example Comp Pack M4s appear at around the £36k mark, M3s at £38,500 and then, getting into the more expensive limited edition models, you can pick up a 2018 M4 CS with 1400 miles on the clock for £60,000 – that's a drop of almost £30,000 in one year – or an M3 30 Jahre with 9k on the clock for £62,000, a drop of £20,000 in two years, and we found an M4 Convertible 30 Jahre for about £57,000, which works out at a £20k drop in about six months WHAT TO LOOK FOR The M4 CS 86 PERFORMANCE BMW Honestly, not a lot Admittedly even the oldest examples aren't all that old and haven't covered that many miles, but that's still long enough for problems to appear and there just haven't been that many Minor stuff includes head and rear light condensation, some interior squeaks and rattles, the carbon roof lifting due to poor quality brackets, stones getting caught in the brake guards, and cracking seat badges The biggest problem is with the crank hub, which can spin and will result in some engine damage or, in the worst case, complete engine failure The number of incidents is very small, but it can and does happen – we've read about owners who've had it happen within days of having the engine repaired from a previous incident and it seems that whether stock, modded, manual or DCT, it can happen to anyone BMW changed the bedplate design later on but there are reports of spun crank hubs on even low-mileage 2018 cars Some companies have engineered solutions so it's definitely worth doing your research, having a proper read of all the information out there and being aware of it, but don't let it put you off buying an M3 or M4 OUR PICK While there are an awful lot of different M3 and M4 models to choose from, truth be told we'd probably be more than happy with just the standard car – it's so quick, looks great, handles brilliantly and is everything you could possibly want, honestly You're never going to drive one and be disappointed, trust us We'd also choose M3 over M4 – the M4 is better value, but we just love the narrow body and wide arch combo of the M3, it looks more muscular and, to our eyes, more visually appealing Whatever we were buying, though, we'd want to spend a little bit more in order to get a nicely-specced car in the right colour; M3s and M4s are quite spec-sensitive and there are definitely some must-have options For us, it's got to be DCT – the manual's good, but we just prefer the feel of DCT, plus it's faster and better on fuel, so it ticks all the boxes really Carbon interior trim would be very high on our list as it looks a million times better than any of the other trim options; we'd want HK audio, possibly HUD and we'd strongly consider Full leather, as it makes the cabin look and feel so much more special What about the Comp Pack, is it worth it? We'd say it's very much a case of personal preference – the ride will be harsher, but at the same time the stock car is known for being a bit twitchy while the Competition suspension revisions make it feel a bit more connected to the road, which is obviously a good thing A less good thing is the seats – they look cool with those cut-out portions, but they don't have lumbar support, so if you have back problems or tend to get back pain when sitting down for long periods, that could be a deal-breaker for you As for the limited edition models, if you've got the means then they are serious bargains when you consider how much money they've dropped in such a short space of time – it's so scary that we actually feel a little bit sorry for the original buyers Either an M4 CS or an M3 30 Jahre would definitely be a nice thing to own, but at £60k you'd feel like you're standing on the edge of a depreciation cliff, and it's a long drop, so we'd go in with our eyes open on something as expensive as that immediate restriction right after the turbos in the exhaust system, increasing volume, power (to the tune of 20-30hp) and improving turbo response Uprated charge pipes are also a worthwhile addition as the stock items can start to break when confronted with increased boost levels An uprated chargecooler from someone like CSF would be a worthwhile addition as it will keep intake temps lower, giving you more power, and can be combined with an uprated or even additional heat exchanger for even more cooling Water/meth injection is also something to consider but that's only really worth looking at once you're really ramping up the power with some uprated turbos There are lots of options out there, like Schmiedmann's Stage upgrade, as fitted to our 700hp M4 cover car this issue, which will really take your M3 or M4 to a whole other level of performance MODDING S55 has huge modding potential ENGINE The S55 has so much tuning potential that you don't need to spend a lot of money to get a lot more power out of it, but you certainly can if you want some truly monster performance Step one will be a JB4, which will give you about 480hp, or a remap, which should give you slightly nearer 500hp The next step will be some downpipes, either cat-less ones or ones equipped with highflow cats, either of which will eliminate the APRIL 2019 87 F8x M3/4 BUYING AND TUNING GUIDE CHASSIS With adaptive dampers standard across the board, you're limited in terms of what you can with the chassis In terms of the suspension, if you're interested in absolute driving dynamics, want adjustability or are planning a hardcore track build, then a set of coilovers from someone like BC Racing, Bilstein or KW will give you a level of adjustment that the stock setup won't be able to match and, likewise, if you're looking to get seriously low then coilovers or air are going to be your two best options If, on the other hand, you're going to be spending most or all of your time using the car on the road then we'd stick with the stock adaptive damper setup because it's really good We'd be more than happy to get some lowering springs to go with it – Swift, Eibach and AC Schnitzer all get good reviews and BMW offers a height-adjustable spring kit as parts of its M Performance range There are loads of styling options out there for both cars STYLING Obviously this is all very personal but our first port of call would be getting rid of the chrome trim that BMW decided would be a good idea and replace it with gloss black or carbon elements from someone like MStyle Carbon splitters look great but can but a nightmare if you're using your M3 or M4 as a daily and are worried about speed humps, in which case a pair of carbon corner splitters would be a better option, and you can also add carbon upper bumper elements, aka 'fangs.' Carbon side blades and mirror caps are always a good option as is a nice boot lip spoiler but if you'd rather splash out you can pick up a CSL-style carbon ducktail boot lid from MStyle from £2500; we also love a diffuser so we'd definitely be picking one up and there are plenty to choose from If you really want to push the boat out then the holy grail is a genuine GTS/ CS vented carbon bonnet, which will set you back almost £5k, and that's without paint And if you really want to go nuts, then how about a set of those OLED rear lights? They will cost you… about £8000 Really Well, at least you're not going to come across too many other cars with them fitted As for the interior, you can go mad with the carbon, including door pulls and DCT gear selector, get yourself an Alcantara M Performance steering wheel and then there are things like a GTS/CS-style Alcantara lightweight arm rest, extended shift paddles and little things like changing the start-stop button for red (or blue) and beyond that have a look at our cover car – we're talking rollcage, lightweight seats, the works really and prices still have further to fall – especially when you're talking about the more expensive examples and limited edition models – the cars positioned at the lower end of the price spectrum could be purchased and enjoyed without fear of losing too much money as the depreciation curve starts to level off And if you don't care about depreciation then none of that matters as you'll be having too much fun to care As an all-round performance package that's practical enough for daily use, capable enough to take on track, and guaranteed to get your heart racing whenever you get behind the wheel, the M3 and M4 are very hard to beat and either one makes for an exceptional used buy The stylish M4 Convertible VERDICT In terms of performance for your pound and bang for your buck, the M3 and M4 are hard to beat They're both seriously fast and incredibly capable machines out of the box, their modding potential is off the scale and the sky is quite literally the limit when it comes to tuning both of these M cars While they've not finished depreciating just yet 88 PERFORMANCE BMW Y ORED B SPONS R E B O T C O E N O T S R E V L I S E L A S N SO ! Very well, is the unsurprising answer I’ve been driving on the AllSeasonContacts for a couple of months now and I’ve got to say that I’ve been very impressed with them In these cold, wet and greasy conditions that we’ve had so much of they feel great and the M3 feels very sure-footed, with impressive levels of grip and traction They definitely instil confidence and I’m very pleased to have them on the car as I know that, whatever the winter weather might throw at the M3, it’ll be able to handle it without breaking a sweat and these Contis get a big thumbs up from me THANKS AND CONTACT Cades Wheels www.cadeswheels.com Continental Tyres www.continental-tyres.co.uk APRIL 2019 91 OUR CARS The E36 had been behaving itself perfectly, until the day of its MOT… Hair dryer called into action to deal with a misted-up headlight ELLIOTT’S E36 323i I’m sorry to sound like a broken record here but, as per usual, the E36 has been performing impeccably There have been no faults and no breakdowns… it literally hasn’t missed a beat In fact, there have been no major issues since the self-inflicted passenger window fault that occurred last winter when I tried to lower said window while the car was frozen solid! Thankfully we’ve had a pretty mild winter this year, which suits me just great The E36 is the first rear-wheel-drive car I’ve owned for some time, you see, so on those occasional frosty mornings we’ve had, you’ll usually find me tiptoeing on the school run around 20mph with other parents in MPVs getting quite frustrated by my general lame approach, not to mention my son who is constantly begging me to ‘get the back out’ and ‘drift it daddy!’ I don’t know where he gets it from… The worse thing about winter for me, though, is having two cars on the road, one of which (the E36) has its MOT due the week before Christmas, and the other (a 3.0-litre Audi Q5) whose tax is due the week after To be fair, in the near three years I’ve owned the E36, it’s flown through the MOT each time This year, when my reminder from the garage came through, I didn’t even have time to check the lights all worked, things had been so manic The morning of the test, as I was walking out to the car I realized one of my headlights was misted up, something I’d been meaning to sort for ages I’d already tried the old trick of drilling a couple of small holes in the rubber but that clearly hadn’t worked With minutes to spare I broke out the extension lead and my wife’s hair drier and set to work on heating up the headlights and hopefully getting rid of the condensation It worked, thankfully, but boy did it take a while… Now dropping your classic (the E36 is 92 PERFORMANCE BMW classed as a classic, right?) car off for an MOT is always a funny experience, that half hour period can bring up all manor of stuff, especially if you haven’t even checked the car over beforehand like me As I said, every year the car has passed with no issues This year I was almost a bit over-confident, which turned out to bite me in the butt Yep, it’s safe to say I was a bit gutted when the guy announced it had failed But what on? It’s clearly an old car, so probably something major, structural or expensive, right? Nope, it failed on the rear number plate lights not working I didn’t know whether to be happy or frustrated The guys at the test centre had already had a quick look at the car and checked the bulbs and fuses with no success With ten working days to get the car retested (and not pay for a whole new test), I decided I’d take it home and try to get to the bottom of what was wrong So I started with the basics and tested the bulbs and fuses again They were all okay Inspecting the light fixings by popping them out, it was clear that somebody had messed around with the wiring at some stage and done a pretty messy job of it After tidying this up as best I could, the lights still didn’t work, so I decided to take a look online to see if there were any other common faults in the system Power clearly wasn’t getting to the lights themselves (for them both to not work), so I needed to find out why The good old Internet pointed me in sort of the right direction Apparently, one area that the wiring can fail is where the loom runs along the boot lid, but at the point where it runs inside and across to the actual light fixing Where the loom bends or tightens to go around a corner, that’s where it can perish or fail, so that was the area I checked out first On inspection, as I peeled back the plastic covering the loom, I discovered that while the wiring was beginning to wear there, that wasn’t what was causing the actual problem at this stage As the wires were starting to show signs of wear, though, I decided to peel the plastic coating back a bit further and soon all would be revealed Surprisingly it wasn’t the corner section as first thought, but rather the straight section of wiring that ran the depth of the boot lid At this stage, I could have looked at purchasing lengths of new wire, solder and a soldering iron and got stuck in, but I don’t have the luxury of owning my own garage and, I figured, now that I’d actually located the problem area, it would be far cheaper to get the MOT guys to carry out the repair So that’s what I did, and it all ended happily ever after thankfully And that’s what I like best about this car, even the small problems it does very occasionally throw up are usually easy (and cheap) to fix Next on the cards, you’ll be pleased to hear I’ve got the car booked in with a Ross at RW Paint to give me a quote for a bit of touch up work (small marks that have been on the car since I bought it), plus look at perhaps fitting the genuine M3 bumper I sourced I’m still torn, because I know it will improve the car’s looks, but so many people seem to prefer the non-M3 front end I currently have I’ll see what Ross says, as he knows his BMWs far better than I I will also be taking the car for a routine service (I’ll probably just an oil and filter change this time, as I’ve not done too many miles since the last comprehensive service) The last time the car was worked on, the guys at AD Autotechnik noticed a small leak on the rocker cover gasket, so I will get that done while the car is at Hack Engineering I will probably get Ben to inspect the brakes and suggest some suitable upgrade options, too Watch this space… E46 engine bay back together and really taking shape Bulb cover vent holes haven’t helped keep the lights dry Underside mid-changeover Fortunately, the whole process can be completed ‘gearbox-in’ CAE shifter fully installed and interior trimmed THOMAS’ E46 M3 Frayed wire was the cause of the failed number plate lights WWW.PERFORMANCEBMWMAG.COM In my last update on the E46 I’d just discovered the accumulator on the SMG had given up the ghost – rendering the gearbox immobile Having looked at the price of a new accumulator from the dealers, I took the fairly big decision to strip the gearbox of its SMG chains and a full manual conversion No prizes for guessing what this month’s update explores then… For those who aren’t familiar with the intricacies of an SMG gearbox, BMW’s early attempts at a paddle shift ’box essentially consisted of a manual gearbox with a hydraulic pack piggybacked to it The hydraulic pack merely replicates the inputs usually driven by human limbs, with an array of sensors which then relay information to the vehicle’s ECU for it to depict gear and clutch positions Retrospectively changing an SMG car to a manual is therefore far simpler than many would first expect Pull off the hydraulic pack, throw in some human interfaces (clutch pedal, gear stick) and you’re away! Well, not quite, but it’s not far off Because the gearbox is hydraulicallydriven, a few components have been omitted from its assembly – namely a centring spring (which is used to centralise the gear stick for neutral) and a reverse switch The centring spring can be re-instated by machining the bell-housing (which obviously requires removal of the ’box), or by using a shifter that incorporates a self-centring function CAE offers such a device, in the form of a fantastic short-shifter, so if you’re not dead-set on OEM looks it’s ideal The short-shifter also adds in the benefit of a more racy, aggressive shift experience – just what this project is all about A black anodised example was duly ordered up from Hack Engineering, with a blue accent chosen for the gear knob to add a little ‘bling’ (various alternative colours are available) Fitting a reverse switch necessitates the tapping of a hole in the side of the gearbox – again, not possible with the ’box fitted, but for a track project the reverse lights are of a low priority, so in this case the switch was left as a ‘rainy day’ job So, with all bases covered, I drove the car onto the ramp at Hack Engineering HQ and the strip down and swap over began A clutch pedal was fitted (any E46 pedal will do), fluid lines run (the brake reservoir already has a barb moulded in), floor pan drilled (to allow a mechanical link through to the gearbox – handily pre-marked on the floorpan) and interior trim trimmed The result? After a little coding work to help the ECU forget its SMG past, the E46 fired straight up and drove beautifully – result! The only downside to the whole job was realising I could’ve done this months ago and progressed further with the rest of the car – but where would we be without a little emotional pain from our projects? So, with the gearbox woes finally put to bed, plans for the interior are taking shape, a trip to the body shop looms and some dyno time is in the works Summer is coming up quickly – time to get things moving! APRIL 2019 93 OUR CARS Primed and ready for painting Calipers prior to being cleaned up Estoril blue was chosen for the brake components New anti-roll bar bracket was fabricated Rear wing required some modifications Patrik tidying up the bodywork Calipers look great in Estoril blue Successful rust removal Rear wing needed a helping hand to fit properly PATRIK’S E36 318ti COMPACT As you know, old cars rust and my car was no exception, but overall the car was quite rustfree There was, however, a little rust on both rear arches and down in the front of the wheel well front and back The bracket for the front anti-roll bar almost did not exist so I made a new one in stainless steel, so that after 100 years it will probably be the only part that’s left of the Compact The Compact is a little short and modest in the back so I needed to something about that I bought a used wing and it’s probably made for an E36 Coupé but I’m not sure The wing is wider and the base of the wing is much longer than a spoiler for a Compact, so I modified it to fit and now the car has a little bit more of an aggressive look and, as a bonus, more downforce and grip To paint the car I contacted Upplands Bilfärg They mixed the right colour and filled spray 94 PERFORMANCE BMW cans, which have double the pressure and thicker paint They give a really good result and you can’t compare them with the spray cans you can buy in an ordinary shop After the body was rust-free and painted it was time to get some serious brakes After looking at the market I got in contact with Endless Racing Brakes Technology I talked to them and specified what car I had and how I will be using it and they recommended their ME20 compound pads for me Why did I contact Endless, you might be wondering?
