Quang Nam, March 29th, 2015 Student Nguyen Thi Duong A AN INTRODUCTION I Reasons for choosing Nguyen Du Secondary School It is cannot denied that practice is one of the most important periods of such higher educations as universities, colleges and institutes, etc which creates opportunities for students to apply what they have learned into the real situations Moreover, thanks to the practice students can get a lot of valuable experiences for their future job Especially, for the foreign language major students as me, practicum helps us apply not only language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing but also soft ones like presentation, public speaking, communication, effective time management, group work, and so on to work In addition, the students can be more confident and realize their strengths and weaknesses to choose a suitable job in the future Therefore, it is very hard and important to choose a suitable practicum environment With the advice from my parents, friends and my old teacher, I decided to choose Nguyen Du Secondary School to practice because of the following reasons: Firstly, it is clear that English has been very popular and useful worldwide in the field of social life such as: economics, education and training, culture, tourism, etc In Viet Nam, English has become an important key in the period of development and integration especially since our country took part in WTO Our Party committee and government have confirmed that: "Education is a top national policy Also, understanding the importance of the English language, the education sector has brought our country to teach English program at the elementary However, at the level of primary, students, to be honest, just learn popular vocabularies and simple grammar structures to know not to understand their deep meanings and usages On the contrary, at secondary school students start to study huge knowledge in terms of lexicon and grammar as well Therefore, I think that it is secondary school where students’ seed of English is carefully sown and reared Secondly, Nguyen Du Secondary School, located at 05 Nguyen Chi Thanh Street, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province, is near my dormitory and my university, about ten minutes by motorbike, so I can save subsistence expenses and travel easier In addition, I can also have the opportunity to meet and ask for my supervisor’s advice more conveniently and frequently Thirdly, the teaching staffs at the school as well as the students are very friendly, sociable and enthusiastic in guiding, helping me, exchanging and learning The former always care, give me many comments, encouragements and create advantageous opportunities for me to improve myself Finally, a decisive reason for my choice is my dream job When I was a child, I always desired to be a teacher of English one day in the future I think that the school is a favorable working environment for me to learn and develop my English skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing I also can make use of this chance to improve teaching skill that I had learned two years ago in teaching course at Da Nang Universuty On practicum period at Nguyen Du Secondary School I can learn, exchange and interact with real teaching environment This helps me to accumulate priceless experiences for the future One more thing, it is in my mind permanently to hope I will get chances so that I can contribute my little knowledge and strength to building a advanced and cultured society, conveying experiences and awareness that I have accumulated for younger generations I hope that after finishing my practice time, I will equip myself with more knowledge, experience and I can enhance my English skills II Student’s objectives at Nguyen Du Secondary School The internship time at Nguyen Du Secondary School is a precious opportunity for me to apply what I have learnt at my university into the real work Firstly, I will improve my English skills as listening, speaking, reading, writing as well as communication, presentation and public speaking also During 6-week practice, I not only use all of my abilities to learn, exchange, consolidate what I have learned, get new and useful knowledge but also try my best to overcome the difficulties as well as my drawbacks in pronunciation, grammatical mistakes, spelling and idea expression In particular, I would like to increase my understanding in the use of words in sentence in different contexts to get the desired results Besides, I am willing to learn the working style of the staffs and teachers in general and teachers of English in particular, effective working method, reasonable time management at the school Those are my main aims during the school to improve myself and have more experiences to apply for my future job B CONTENT CHAPTER I: AN OVERVIEW OF NGUYEN DU SECONDARY SCHOOL 1.1 Background information about the school 1.1.1 General information about the school Nguyen Du Secondary school is located at 05 Nguyen Chi Thanh Street in Tan Thanh ward to the north of Tam Ky city It borders with Phuoc Hoa ward to the east, Hoa Thuan Ward to the weast and Tam Dan commune, Phu Ninh district to the north Nguyen Du Secondary school was founded in 1990 It used to be at 18 Nguyen Du street After more than 20 years of operating and developing, the school has gradually grown and affirmed its position in education branch, contributed to developing education at the local The school plan of developing in stage 2010-2015 orientates the strategy goals for 2020 and main solutions in developing process This is an important basis for the school’s decisions in education at the local With all proud and encouragable achievements, the school was awarded the Labour Medal Thanks to this, Nguyen Du Secondary school affirms the competence of teaching and training of the teaching staffs, creating firm beliefs for students’ parents and people At the beginning of the school year 2014-2015, the total number of teaching staffs, servants and guards at Nguyen Du school is 75, among which there are 64 teachers There are 44 teachers who graduated from universities, 17 teachers graduating from colleges and teachers having Master degree Twenty nine teachers are the party members The total number of students is 1310 of which 633 students are female divided into 31 the concern and direction of the leader of the branch, Party and local authority as well as the assistance from the students’ parents representative committee and all students’ parents, especially the effort in teaching and studying well of teachers and students, Nguyen Du Secondary School achieved following results: - Carrying out well the……? - Having the cooperation of the unions, specialized groups and all members in teaching council - Most of the teachers are responsible and whole-hearted - The quality of good students and secondary school graduation were maintained and effectively developed - Technique and information applications were adopted effectively in managing students, especially the soft ware “school view” - Extra- curriculum activities were maintained and brought good impacts on teaching students - The relations between local authority, students’ parents association and the school were extremely close, which gave the school great help and assistance to fulfill its public schools got the rate at 93.7% There were 43 students passing the specialized high school of Nguyen Binh Khiem (up 19 students in comparison with the previous year The school won 296 prizes (275 academic awards and 21 sporty prizes) in the weak 0.3 competition at the city scale and 16 prizes (14 academic ones and sporty ones) at province scale The results in city, province and area competitions: In the school year of 2013-2014, the department of education and training, Tam Ky city’s complimenting and competing council ranked the school won the title outstanding labour group, outstanding and strong public union Advantages and disadvantages that the school encountered: Advantages: - Being concerned, directed and created favourable conditions by the leaders of Education branch and authorities of two wards Tan Thanh- Hoa Thuan - Receiving enthusiastic help from Students’ parents Association - The teaching staffs and workers are sustainable and responsible - Most students study hard, carry out well the school regulations Disadvantages: - The facilities don’t meet the need of teaching and learning nowadays There is not enough rooms to teach two times per day - Some parents not pay concern and attention to their children - The social situations have many negative impacts on students 1.2 The roles of English in the school At Nguyen Du Secondary School, English plays an important role because it is mainly used as a key language in English lessons and English speaking club’s activities Students and teachers of English seem to use English all the time in class Only when a large number of students in class don’t understand the lesson, teachers explain in Vietnamese There are three main roles of English in the school: Firstly, English is used in daily conversations between teachers and students in English lessons It is a mean of communication in all activities It is not difficult to understand the importance of English in the school All students use English to exchange ideas and make discussions Secondly, English is also a key language at English speaking club All students taking part in the club use English to communicate and join games and activities hold by the club’s leader The slogan of the club is “ light up yourself by language” The word “language” hear means English Apart from being conveyed knowledge and experiences here, students are shared useful and meaningful stories, teachings helping them to raise awareness of the world outside Besides, the school organizes annual speaking English contest, which helps students improve their English ability These show us the important role of English at the school CHAPTER 2: STUDENT’S DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION 2.1 General requirements: So as to have a good internship time as a teacher at Nguyen Du secondary school, I should have many skills as follows: - Firstly, I need to have the researching and designing and board using skills It means I will be able to look things up I have to know the way to attract others’ attention - Secondly, presentation and public speaking skills are also important to have if I want to become a good teacher For this, I need to know my own language perfectly: grammar, vocabulary, style Even the little thing like spelling and intonation are very important - Thirdly, clothes and gesture also play a great role in teaching A teacher is required to be neat and polite, either extremely friendly or serious - Last but not least, I need to be a patient and enthusiastic person Teacher is not one who conveys knowledge but also helps students to form good manners He is an important factor equipping students necessary things when students come into the real life And of course it takes a long time to train spoilt students Hence, during this process, it is important for teachers to have patience and enthusiasm Detailed job description: I have six weeks to practice as a teacher of English and a form teacher in Nguyen Du Secondary school Here was not my time for work stable However, I could take a rest on Thursday and Sunday During my practice time I did as a real teacher For the first two weeks, I went to school to observe everything in the school especially teacher’s teaching method I realized each teacher has private teaching methods and I saw a common point is that it has attracted all students in order to start new lessons Teachers have organized games or chatted with students, made a check-up or sung a song in order to be stable class and accquire new knowledge During the lesson, teacher have prepared pictures and the real items Other teachers have prepared some questions, tasks for students to discuss with each group, for students to listen to the tape practicing their English skills The way to teach was very comfortable and did not create stress for students I had a talk with Mr Quang - the Head Master of the school and Ms Thuy – my guider I listened to the advice and information of the staffs here on teaching methods and activities I also had an opportunity to to be familiar with students and every things in the teaching council During other weeks, I was allowed to teach English for class 7/1, 7/4 and 7/5 and be a form teacher of class 6/4 of the school Therefore, I had to prepare lesson plans using soft ware “word” and “power point” well before going to the class Besides, I had to sent the lesson plans done by myself to Ms Thuy for correction Furthermore, I designed games for students to apply during class time so that they made the lessons more attractive and exciting When doing that, I had a chance to review many vocabulary and structures Especially, after each period, I heard Ms Thuy’s and Mr Hao’s suggestions, advice and encouragement which helped me improve my English skill a lot All of these things were valuable experiences for me to support for my future job Besides, I was asked to join many extra curriculum activities at the centre This was an opportunity for me to adapt to the new environment and keep up with activities easily It also helped me to be more confident and active than before The teachers shared experiences in economic, social, cultural, environmental problems It made me take account of general knowledge which I can use in my job in the future Especially, approaching teachers and students on some matters not only help me to recognize mistakes but also correct them directly for translation and pronunciation Besides, I could involve in ordinary communication as well This is a useful method to contribute to the improvement of all skills CHAPTER 3: REFLECTION Advantages: Nguyen Du Secondary School is a practical environment suitable for my profession as well as teaching methods and I have a lot of opportunities to learn and accumulate practical experiences as follow: First, I received a lot of deep assistance, encourage and advice from supervisor, leaders and teachers in the school Especially, I take chance to approach with students who learn English They are friendly, easy- going and intelligent, too Hence, my confidence has been improved quickly Second, thanks to practice I have developed and improved many teaching skills including the way to teach vocabulary, exploiting new words, the way to teach reading, writing, listening as well as model sentences I understood methods of traditionally and modernly teaching English in secondary schools, holding the head of operations, consolidating to improve my knowledge, career skills, learn valuable experiences from the teachers, and my friends at school, through attending lesson, class activities, the experience withdrawal lesson Third, when preparing lesson plans, I also have chance to review new words and structure Therefore, my English skills have been remarkably improved I made use of time to collect information and research many documents about school for completing my report One more advantage for me is that practice time has helped me to equip knowledge, skills and valuable experiences to get ready for my future job Disadvantages: Besides the advantages of the practice internship at Nguyen Du Secondary School, I still cannot avoid a lot of disadvantages: Since practice time helped students learn and practice, there hve been still some limitations In addition to the significant progress they have made, some students are still lazy to learn In details, they did not prepare for the new lessons, as well as doing the exercises and review the old lessons They have not recognized the role, purpose and the importance of learning English at school Thus, it was hard for me to teach new lessons smoothly and quickly There are a lot of things which are different from knowledge I leaned at university Many things are quite new for me to embrace in the short time It was the first time to collide reality with many strange elements Experience in teaching is limited Therefore, I faced more challenges and difficulties I have step by step resolved my problems with teaching staffs I still can’t be confident to teach students because I feel very frightened Sometimes, I don’t understand psychology of students I don’t remember to name students especially, having many circumstances I can’t solve quickly Moreover, I meet a lot of difficulties in lecture and compose a lesson No matter how challenging and difficult the problems were, they didn’t reduce my intention in practicum process I myself was always stuck to the plans to overcome and resolve problems The guidance and support from all staffs helped me to become more and more confident and professional To the end of my training process, I felt myself better equipped with much knowledge related to many aspects, which I can apply it for my future job Solutions After having worked very hard with my teaching at Nguyen Du Secondary school to overcome my weaknesses and develop the strengths, I could draw some solutions as follows: I worked out methods in planning to resolve obstacles and enhance my knowledge I spent a lot of time preparing new lessons thoroughly Then, I focused on teaching aids and my duties was to finish them on time These are important lessons so as to draw up a suitable schedule Finishing job on time is an important issue in order to secure a solid and stable job Especially, creating timetable is suitable for dividing tasks and function Asking teachers for help when I are in troubles is also important for creating a learning environment, gaining experiences and clarifying mistakes exactly Writing down the new words or any grammars in the paper to remember clearly is a useful method for me to improve my English Then, I read and write many times to remember I should be polite, friendly, helpful when teaching to students It makes me work better Besides, to improve teaching skills I should observe the teachers’ lessons more carefully Moreover, I must contact with students to understand their psychology Sometimes, I visited poor students if necessary C CONCLUSION Summary Practicum period is a meaningful time for me, I have collected many things and learnt many experiences in teaching environment as well as teaching English Nguyen Du Secondary school is really an ideal place to practice as a teacher Although I had to work very hard and met many difficulties, I gained some good results instead I have got a lot of experiences about English skills as well as communication skills in society, teaching skills Besides, internship time is an opportunity for me to apply the knowledge that I have learned at Quang Nam university into real job Once being applied into real environment, my knowledge is also gradually improved It required me to study more and more to adapt to the future job and the development of society The most important thing during this internship is that it helps me to experience funny, happy and sad feelings of teachers Lessons learned After the practicum time at Nguyen Du Secondary school, I myself have learned valuable lessons To be a good teacher in general and a teacher of English in particular requires one to know how to use the soft approach then, have good moral qualities not only in schools but also in society 2.1 Lessons for myself and for student like me: I have recognized the essential roles of a good knowledge and fluency of English skills for my future job in modern and changeable society You cannot teach for students unless using English as a means of communication Therefore, lack of English skills is a great disadvantage Besides English, we need to master other profession and general knowledge in as many fields as possible To have good work, I need ever knowledge, skills and real experience I find that the knowledge at school is never sufficient I have to study more and from other sources beside classes We need to learn more anywhere and anytime that we can learn to put theory into practice That will help us to have a good job in the future The more knowledge I get, the better I at work As a student- the youth, we should be eager to learn and learn as much as possible At school, I learn the way of working faster and more efficiently It will develop the creativeness, attraction and make the emotion from students It is a key to success in this field 2.2 Lessons for teaching profession: - To teach English effectively, you must be well-prepared before going to class from lesson plans to teaching aids, from your sayings, gestures to the way of dressing You also make sure of pronunciation, spelling and intonation - To make it more exciting, teachers should let students play at least one game per a period Doing this helps students not only to pay attention to the lesson but also avoid being bored - You should consider all students good ones so that you can teach fully knowledge according to the standard of knowledge, skills and attitude, avoiding the situation of having not enough time Suggestions From what I have undergone in my internship, I would like to give some suggestions to the related department and people I worked with in my internship 3.1 For the Foreign Languages Department of Quang Nam University Being is an English teachers, contact with students is an important Therefore, I think Quang Nam University should organize more pedagogy courses every year in order to help students practice more and easy to adapt with working environment in the future The University should equip modern equipment for teaching and learning to improve the qualities of teaching and learning I think all of these things will enhance the effective of learning and teaching English in the University further 3.2 For Nguyen Du Secondary School Practice time is an important process for the beginning of students’ job in the future, so the practicing place should make more favorable conditions for students to practice Moreover, the teachers, staffs should be well- trained to enhance professional skills in work They need to improve speaking and communication skills In addition, they need to become more active and work more effectively The headmaster of the school ought to create more chances for teachers and students to communicate in English to improve their speaking skills, creating the convenient and comfortable working environment for the staffs 3.3 For English students Students should be well-prepared for future job during school time It is also essential for students to get information and real experiences in the internship When we are still students, we should study hard if possible We should strive to learn and polish up our knowledge from now For me, being an English student, I am always aware of the importance of using English and applying English skills into my job in the future I will try my hardest to perfect myself under different aspects Besides, I will take part in more social activities in order to improve my communication skill ... prepared some questions, tasks
