When using the video timeline, every layer has a set of default properties for Position, Opacity, and Style In Adobe Photoshop, animation information is stored in keyframes, which represent a change in at least one property over time For example, if you want to have a circle move from left to right, the first keyframe would have a position property for the circle on the left and the second keyframe would have a position property for the circle on the right Over a certain period of time, Photoshop moves the circle from one position to the other 11 Click the Enable keyframe animation icon ( ) next to the Opacity parameter to enable animation A keyframe is created at the beginning of the Timeline Select the Enable keyframe animation to the left of Opacity to define an opacity keyframe If Enable keyframe animation is clicked off, it disables animation A by-product of disabling the animation of a property is that all the keyframes for that property are deleted 12 In the Layers panel, type in the Opacity text field and press the Enter or Return key Adjust the opacity so the layer is not visible 13 Double-click the Scrub to set time field (bottom left of Timeline panel) The Set Current Time dialog box appears Type :03 and click OK This moves your Current Time Indicator to the three-second mark on the Timeline The Current Time Indicator (the blue wedge at the top of the Timeline) indicates your animation’s current time You can also drag the Current Time Indicator, but setting the time manually is more precise Double-click Scrub to set time and enter 3:00 14 In the Layers panel, type 100 in the Opacity text field, and press Enter/Return This creates a new keyframe where your Current Time Indicator is located This is the nature of timeline-based animation in Photoshop If animation is enabled for a parameter, any change made to that parameter will create a new keyframe at the location of the Current Time Indicator 15 Return the Current Time Indicator back to the starting point by clicking 0.0 at the beginning of the Timeline 16 Press the Play button ( ) at the bottom of the Animation panel to preview the animation The text fades in over three seconds You can press the Stop button ( ) when you are finished viewing the animation 17 Choose File > Save As The Save As dialog box appears Navigate to the ps13lessons folder and type ps1305_animation.psd into the File name text field Select Photoshop from the Format drop-down menu and click Save Keep the file open for the next part of this lesson Rendering a video file In the lower-left corner of the Timeline panel, click the arrow icon This is the Render Video button and it will open the Render Video window (You can also choose File > Export > Render Video.) Note that the Render Video Window is divided into four areas: Location, File Options, Range, and Render Options Location: allows you to specify a name for the file that you are going to export and a location to save that file File Options: controls the type of file you want to create from your animation Adobe Media Encoder is the default option here and gives you numerous options for choosing the format, size, and other parameters of the video file that you will export The other option in this section is a Photoshop Image Sequence, which is a relatively specialized format that exports each frame of your video as an individual image file Range: controls the amount of the animation to export By default, it will export the entire animation timeline, but you can limit the export range to lesser parts of the Timeline Render Options: controls whether an alpha channel is included in the output file along with the file’s frame rate Some exportable formats will not allow you to include an alpha channel In the Location name section, type ps1305 into the Name text field Click the Select Folder button, and navigate to the ps13lessons folder, then click OK or Choose In the File Options section, note that the Format is set to H.264 This format is the type of compression used, but there are a number of different Presets that determine the size and frame rate as well Click the Preset menu and choose Apple iPhone, iPod - 320x240 24 This will allow for quick rendering time In the Range section, make sure that the option button next to All Frames is selected Change the settings to render a small video Click the Render button to create your video file The rendering time will vary, depending on your computer hardware Choose File > Close You can return to the native Photoshop file to make edits at a later point, if necessary You can test your file by navigating to the ps13lessons folder and selecting your ps1305 file It should open the QuickTime Player, and you can view your work in action Self study Using the Frame mode in the Timeline panel, create a text layer and experiment with animating its position so it moves around your document Using the Timeline mode in the Timeline panel, experiment with animating the effects on a layer Animate a drop-shadow so it moves over time Review Questions What is more important to note in an image size to be used on a web page, pixel dimensions or resolution? When would you need to save a video file with an alpha channel? Name four web image formats and provide an example of when to use each one Answers It is more important to have the pixel dimensions of an image accurate, rather than the resolution As a web and video creator, you would only use the top section of the Image Size dialog box An alpha channel is a way for applications to understand which parts of your video are transparent and which are opaque Four web image formats are: a The JPEG format is used for saving photographs and other continuous-tone imagery b The GIF format is used for saving limited-tone imagery (images with lots of solid color) such as logos and other graphics GIF supports transparency and animation c The PNG format is used for saving either photographic imagery or images with a lot of solid color It can also support transparency in varying amounts d The WMBP format is used for saving images for mobile content devices, such as cell phones Lesson 14 What’s new in Photoshop 2018 What you’ll learn in this lesson: Using CC Libraries Taking advantage of artboards Exporting multiple artboards and sizes There are some incredible new features is Photoshop CC 2018 Some that include basic improvements that include improved brush and drawing tools, and more advanced features that allow an easy entry into 3D In this lesson you find out about additional typesetting capabilities as well as new brushes and how you can better save and organize them Lots of tips and tricks will be sprinkled in along the way Workspace improvements Let’s get started Launch Photoshop CC 2018 and hover over a tool, in the toolbar, to see what are called Rich tooltips These tool-tips provide you with a video and description of each tool This might be something that you initially want to turn on, but once you now longer need them you can choose Edit > Preferences > Tools and uncheck Use Rich Tooltips (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > Tools and uncheck Use Rich Tooltips (Mac OS) Get more information about your tools with the Rich Tooltips Experimenting with the new variable fonts Adobe has added some dynamic new features to help you to design with type much more fluidly In this next section you will open a file that has a text layer and make changes to the type using the new variable type features as well as the new additions to the Properties panel Choose File > Open and navigate to the pslessons folder Open the folder named ps14lessons and open the file named ps1401 An image of a woman playing a drum, with some text, appears If you don’t see the Layers panel choose Window > Layers and select the top text layer Using your Type tool ( ) click inside the text, in the image area, and then press Ctrl+A (Windows) of Command+A (Mac OS) You can also select Select > All from the menu You will now make some changes in the Properties panel If you don’t see the Properties panel choose Window > Properties In the Font Family drop-down menu select any font that has the variable symbol to the right of the name, as seen in the next figure In this example Bahnschrift was selected A variable font is represented by a VAR symbol in the font family name Note that additional Weight option now appears in the Properties panel Click and drag the weight option to the left or right in order to see the type become heavier or lighter Experiment with this option by selecting a single word or letter at a time and mixing up the weight of this text in this image Brushes brush presets Another great new feature is included with the brush tools in Photoshop You can now experiment with new creative presets, as well as save and organize your brushes so that you can return to your favorites more easily While working with the brushes you might note performance improvements You won’t be slowed down by lagging brushes New, faster reaction time is especially noticeable when working on large documents with large brushes In order to experiment with the new brush features create a new blank layer using the Layers panel and clicking on the Add new layer ( ) button Choose Window > Brushes to see the Brushes panel Select your Brush tool ( ) Expand some of the default Brushes folders to see that new presets have been added Click to select a brush preset and start paining over your image in order to see the different brush effects that you have ready at your fingertips Experiment with additional brush presets that have been newly added to Photoshop Notice that, as you select different brushes, the last used brushes are displayed at the top of the Brushes panel Changing the Brush Properties You can also select the brush presets and change their properties in order to create your own unique brush Select any brush preset from the Brushes panel Click on the Brush Settings tab and Change any settings you wish and see the changes applied in the preview window at the bottom of the panel Once you have created a style of brush that you would like to save choose the Panel menu in the upper-right of the Brush Settings panel and select New Brush Preset When the New Brush dialog box appears, add your own unique name and choose OK Your brush has now been added as a preset so that you can select it when you like Organizing your brushes Not only can you create and save presets, you can organize your saved brush presets into named folders Organize and save your brushes in the order you want Using your Drag and drop to reorder, create folders and subfolders, scale the brush stroke preview, toggle new view modes, and save brush presets with opacity, flow, blend mode, and color Create new folders and name them to help you store your favorites where you can find them Spherical panorama Want to stand in one stop and create a 360 pano with your phone or other device? You can now import that image into Photoshop to make further edits and then export it as a movie Try this new feature out with one of your own images or use the sample pano included with this lesson named PS1402.jpg Choose File > Open and locate a panoramic image, or use the file located in the ps14lessons folder named ps1402.psd Choose 3D > Spherical Panorama > New Panorama from Selected in Photoshop What you’ll learn in this appendix: Accessing CC fonts Searching for a font family Adding web kit fonts Adobe’s Creative Cloud applications provides access to many fonts, but these may not have been installed You may encounter missing font messages if opening a file that uses fonts which have not been installed on your computer To work with these missing fonts you will need to install them or select different fonts Adobe Creative Cloud uses an online option for adding fonts and accessing fonts that are listed as missing Users of previous versions of Creative Cloud applications may find that fonts that were previously installed by default, such as Myriad Pro and Minion Pro, are no longer installed automatically, and must instead be installed manually A paid subscription to most Creative Cloud applications provides access to the Adobe font library through a utility known as Adobe Typekit The process of installing fonts may be new, but it is easy to master and useful to know Here you will learn how to access Creative Cloud missing fonts by using Typekit How to access all Creative Cloud fonts Adobe Creative Cloud fonts are accessed as part of the Typekit Portfolio plan This provides access to a complete font library for both web and print use It is available with: • Creative Cloud All Apps subscriptions, whether team or individual • A stand-alone Typekit plan • Any Creative Cloud application, such as Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign The only exception is Acrobat, which does not include fonts • A Typekit Free plan which includes some fonts, but not all, is included with the Creative Cloud Photography plan, which includes only Photoshop and Lightroom When to access Creative Cloud Fonts In determining when you want to access the Creative Cloud font library, it’s generally a good idea to access the fonts using TypeKit when: You are provided a file that you did not create on your device, and you receive a font missing error when opening the file You want to search for a unique font that matches the personality of your artwork or design You want to use a font family on a website and wish to make sure that viewers see the font you intended rather than the fonts on their own computer Finding Fonts in the Creative Cloud library using Typekit You can easily access Typekit from most of the Adobe applications by starting Typekit, then selecting Type > Add Fonts Alternatively, you can also browse the selection of available fonts online by browsing to https://typekit.com/fonts Check in the upper-right corner to see if your profile is already recognized If you see your profile picture, you are logged in Sign in using your Creative Cloud credentials If you see Sign in, click on the Sign in button and use your same email and password login that you use for your Creative Cloud subscription Once you are logged in you can start browsing and searching for font families In this first part of the lesson, you will browse to find an interesting font family that you might want to use for a future project In the second part of this lesson you will search and download a specific font family Browse to identify the font family of your choice, by clicking Browse in the menu, then click on all Families Enter sample text in the text box, or click on Choose sample text to choose preset characters Use the slider to sample your text in different sizes Select a Classification in the Filter pane on the right Browsing in Adobe Typekit If necessary, use the additional filters to locate the perfect font for your needs For example, you can search for a heading font family that reads well on-screen, which would be useful for a website The types of fonts you should use in Creative Cloud projects depends upon your needs Consider the following options that are available to help you identify the best font for your needs:: San Serif can be used for a more modern look or online Use the filter for font families that work well as headings A heavy weight font for emphasis Normal to wide width A large x-height, which is determined by the size of a lower-case “x” Contrast can be set as even on all sides Find the font you want or need using filters You can choose the Grid ( ) or List view ( ) icons to change how the results from your font search are presented on screen Choose a font that you wish to sync to your system by clicking on it You are directed to a screen that shows all the typefaces that are included with that font family A font family is the entire set, a font is the individual category that includes, size, width, and other characteristics depending upon the family that you select For example, a font family may include the light or bold versions, while a single font includes only one style If you would like to add all the fonts choose Sync All, or click on Sync to the right of just the fonts you would like to sync from this font family You will see a message and alert (if your system is set to receive alerts), that the fonts have been added to your system Click on Sync All to sync all of the fonts in the font family with your system, or just select the fonts that you wish to use Keep in mind that you can sync up to 100 fonts at any one time with the Portfolio plan of Typekit Click on Synced Fonts button in the upper-right of the page if you want to check your synced font status and unsync any fonts that you no longer need Searching for a font family You can search for a font family to use in your Creative Cloud applications In this exercise you can learn to search for a font family In this example Myriad is added, but if you already have Myriad, you can search for a different font Go to Typekit.com, or choose Type > Add Fonts from Typekit from an Adobe application If you already have Typekit open, click the Adobe Typekit logo in the upper-right of the display to return to the Home menu When Typekit appears, type Myriad in the Search Typekit… textbox, or search for possible Click on Kits in the upper-right of the Typekit site, and select Create new kit Create a kit in order to use selected fonts on a website Add a name to identify this kit, then add the domain name where you will be using the fonts, then press Continue Assign a name and the domain address (URL) to use fonts on a website In the Add your embed code screen that appears next, choose how to
