YAHOO SECURITY BREACH A young computer hacker who investigators say unwittingly worked for Russian spies was sentenced to ive years in prison Tuesday for his role in a massive security breach at Yahoo that federal agents say was directed by a Russian intelligence agency U.S Judge Vince Chhabria also ined Karim Baratov $250,000 during a sentencing hearing in San Francisco Baratov, 23, pleaded guilty in November to nine felony hacking charges He acknowledged in his plea agreement that he began hacking as a teen seven years ago and charged customers $100 per hack to access web-based emails Prosecutors allege he was “an international hacker for hire” who indiscriminately hacked for clients he did not know or vet, including dozens of jobs paid for by Russia’s Federal Security Service 170 Image: Mark Blinch 171 172 Baratov, who was born in Kazakhstan but lived in Toronto, Canada, where he was arrested last year, charged customers to obtain another person’s webmail passwords by tricking them to enter their credentials into a fake password reset page Prosecutors said in court papers that Baratov’s Russian-language Web site named “webhacker” advertised services for “hacking of email accounts without prepayment.” Prosecutors said Russian security service hired Baratov to target dozens of email accounts using information obtained from the Yahoo hack Prosecutors argued that Russia’s Federal Security Service targeted Russian journalists, U.S and Russian government oicials and employees of inancial services and other private businesses Baratov and his attorneys also said his work with the Russia spy agency was unwitting The court documents allege Baratov claimed he could access webmail accounts maintained by Google and Russian providers such as Mail Ru and Yandezx He would provide customers with a screenshot of the hacked account and promised he could change security questions so they could maintain control of the account The U.S Justice Department also charged two Russian spies with orchestrating the 2014 security breach at Yahoo to steal data from 500 million users Dmitry Aleksandrovich Dokuchaev and Igor Anatolyevich remain at large and prosecutors believe they are living in Russia, which doesn’t have an extradition treaty with the United States 173 174 He is alleged to have collected more than $1.1 million in fees, which he used to buy a house and expensive cars “Deterrence is particularly important in a case like this,” the judge said during the hearing He rejected prosecutors call for a prison sentence of nearly 10 years, noting Baratov’s age and clean criminal record pruor to his arrest Baratov has been in custody since his arrest last year He told the judge Tuesday that his time behind bars has been “a very humbling and eyeopening experience.” He apologized to those he hacked and promised “to be a better man” and obey the law upon his release The judge said it is likely Baratov will be deported once he is released from prison 175 176 US SAYS NORTH KOREA BEHIND MALWARE ATTACKS The Trump administration issued a fresh warning Tuesday about malicious North Korean cyber activity, as that nation’s leader dispatched a top adviser to New York to prepare for a possible summit on its nuclear arsenal The technical alert from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security highlighted two pieces of malware said to have been used to target U.S infrastructure and aerospace, inancial and media companies for at least nine years to steal information and remotely manipulate networks 177 In recent years, the United States has accused North Korea of launching a slew of cyberattacks, and it wasn’t immediately clear if there was any signiicance to the timing of the latest warning, which came as President Donald Trump is eying nuclear talks with leader Kim Jong Un In preparation for the summit, Kim Yong Chol, a former four-star army general and military intelligence chief, is set to meet in New York with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo — a rare visit to the U.S by a high-level North Korean oicial Kim Yong Chol is suspected to have been behind a 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment over the movie “The Interview,” a satire about a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader The alert described two pieces of malware: a remote access tool known as Joanap and a server message block worm commonly known as Brambul The malware is reportedly being used as part of the North Korean government’s cyber activities, called “Hidden Cobra.” “FBI has high conidence that Hidden Cobra actors are using IP (internet protocol) addresses to maintain a presence on victims’ networks and enable network exploitation,” the alert said “Hidden Cobra actors have likely been using both Joanap and Brambul malware since at least 2009 to target multiple victims globally and in the United States, including the media, aerospace, inancial and critical infrastructure sectors.” The U.S government has identiied more than 85 compromised networks The addresses are being distributed along with suggested remediation actions Oicials urged privatesector irms to immediately report any activity 178 179 associated with the malware to the Department of Homeland Security National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center or the FBI Cyber Watch Late last year, the U.S said it had determined that North Korea was behind the WannaCry ransomware attack that infected hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide and crippled parts of Britain’s National Health Service The U.S said it blamed North Korea based on evidence and information conirmed by other governments and private companies, including the United Kingdom and Microsoft North Korean oicials said it was a baseless provocation 180 Image: Thomas Trutschel 181 ...
