free ebooks ==> www.ebook777.com Crochet Learn Bruges Lace TM by ellen gormle y Step-by-step TECHNIQUE BOOK includes written and symbol instructions with FUN & FASHIONABLE projects www.ebook777.com 871206 free ebooks ==> www.ebook777.com Introduction O rnate lacework called “bobbin lace” originated in Brugge, Belgium In the early 1700s, the Sisters Apostoline religious order began teaching the complex and beautiful lacework in a monastery in that region In the bobbin lace technique, multiple strands of thread are tied one strand per heavy bobbin handle The bobbins are twisted, turned and moved over and under one another, forming the complex lace patterns Pins are placed periodically in the lace to hold the structure temporarily onto the paper pattern that lies beneath The method has a woven look to it when the bobbins are almost braided over and under in a complex order It is believed that many lace variations evolved from the early bobbin lace patterns One of the variations is called Bruges lace (“Bruges” is pronounced “broozh;” it is the French name for the Belgium city of Brugge.) This technique uses a crochet hook and thread rather than bobbins and pins It may have been developed as late as the 1930s, though there is little literature to explain the evolution between bobbin lace to modern Bruges lace In Bruges lace, long strips of short rows are made and connected as they are worked The strips, usually referred to as tapes or ribbons, may be connected to chain spaces on previous rows to make turns, waves and curves for a serpentine appearance (as seen in the Spiral Cowl project), or they may be connected to separate tapes (as seen in the Bonus Scarf) or connect to motifs (as seen in the Pea Pod Scarf) A typical Bruges lace tape has three elements: the short rows of stitches, which make up the body of the “tape;” the chain loops at the side of the rows, which are sometimes called “arches;” and the joins to other tapes or motifs, which are sometimes called “crosses.” Tapes and motifs are joined to other pieces by slip stitching into the chain loops on the sides of the rows Tapes can also be joined with taller stitches, treble stitches or a combination of chains and taller stitches (as seen in the Dune Throw) Traditionally, most forms of lace are made with one neutral color Because Bruges lace can be made in pieces and units, it’s easy to incorporate multiple colors When a Bruges lace project is made in all one color, there is an illusion of an allover cohesive fabric where it is difficult to see where one piece ends and another begins A Special Thank you I was first introduced to Bruges lace by designer/ teacher Susan Lowman I was fortunate to take an introductory course to Bruges lace with Susan in 2010 I want to say a special thank you to Susan for her inspiration and knowledge Learn Bruges Lace TM by ellen gormle y free ebooks ==>
