I CÁC TRƯỜNG HỢP LUÔN CHIA ĐỘNG TỪ SỐ ÍT

1 Chủ ngữ số ít thì đi với động từ số ít

Ex: His dad doesn’t care about him

2 Khi chủ ngữ là các đại lượng chỉ thời gian, khoảng cách, tiền bạc, hay sự đo lường

Ex: 5 miles is too far to walk

3 Khi chủ ngữ là một đại từ bất định: someone, anything, nothing, everyone, another

Ex: - Everything is ok!

- Nothing is impossible!

4 Khi chủ ngữ là một mệnh đề

Ex: - All I want to do now is to sleep

- That she achieved 6.5 IELTS surprised everyone

5 Khi chủ ngữ bắt đầu bằng "To infinitive" hoặc "V.ing"

Ex: - Sleeping in class is unacceptable

- To become a leader requires a lot of hard work

6 Một số danh từ có hình thức số nhiều nhưng lại chia động từ số ít

 Danh từ chỉ môn học, môn thể thao: physics, mathematics, economics, athletics, billards,

 Danh từ chỉ bệnh: measles, mumps, diabetes, rabies,

 Danh từ chỉ tên một số quốc gia: The Phillippines, the United States

7 Khi chủ ngữ bắt đầu bằng Many a/Each/Every thì động từ chia ở số ít

Ex: - Many a good man has been destroyed by drink

- Every student has to register for the exam

- Each student is given a feedback note

- Each of the cities need to carry out their own research

II CÁC TRƯỜNG HỢP LUÔN CHIA ĐỘNG TỪ SỐ NHIỀU

1 Chủ ngữ số nhiều thì chia động từ số nhiều

Ex: His sons are all talented

2 Một số danh từ luôn dùng số nhiều:

people, police, cattle, children, geese, mice, teeth, feet,

Ex: The children are too naughty

Trousers: quần dài Eyeglasses: kính mắt

Jeans: quần jeans Tweezers: cái nhíp

Shorts: quần sooc Pliers: cái kìm

Pants: quần dài Tongs: cái kẹp

Scissors: kéo Shoes: giày

3 Nếu hai chủ ngữ nối nhau bằng "and" - và có quan hệ đẳng lập thì động từ dùng số nhiều

Ex: Katie and Allie are my favourite students

Tuy nhiên, nếu 2 danh từ cùng chỉ một người, một bộ, hoặc 1 món ăn thì động từ chia ở số ít

Ex: Bread and butter is their daily food

4 Cấu trúc both N1 and N2

Ex: Both academic performance and extra-curricular activities are considered when applying for a scholarship

5 The + adj  chỉ một tập hợp người

Ex: The poor need help from the society

1 Tùy thuộc vào danh từ đi sau là nhiều hay ít mà chia động từ tương ứng

+ all of, a lot of, some of, half of, the majority of, none of, part of, one of

Ex: - Some of the candidates turn up late

- Half of the milk is gone

+ There, Here

Ex: - There are three kids in the room

- There is a kid in the room

2 Luôn chia theo danh từ thứ nhất:

+ as long as, as well as, with, together with, along with, in addition to, accompanied by

Ex: - Hoa, as long as her friends, is going to Nha Trang this month

+ N1 of N2:

Ex: - The study of how living things work is called philosophy

- The negative effects of going to bed late have been discussed with much concern

- The flock of birds is flying to the South

3 Either/ Neither

+ Neither (of) + N số nhiều + V số ít

Either of

Ex: Neither/Neither of the/Either of the restaurants is good

+ Either A or B thì động từ chia theo chủ ngữ thứ hai (gần động từ nhất)

Neither A nor B

Ex: Neither Lona nor her friends are able to help me with this task

Ngoài ra, not only A but also B, A or B, A nor B cũng chia theo chủ ngữ thứ hai, gần động từ hơn

4 Một số danh từ chỉ tập hợp

Congress family group crowd

Organization team army committee

Government jury class club

 Nếu xem như một đơn vị thì chia V số ít

 Nếu chỉ từng cá nhân tạo nên tập thể thì chia V số nhiều

Ex: - My class is planning to go camping this month

- My class are going back to their homes

5 Amount/Number

Ex: - The amount of sugar left is not enough

- A large amount of sugar has been used

- The number of students taking IELTS is higher and higher
