Tết Nguyên Đán Tết is an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions During Tết, Vietnamese visit their relatives and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year They consider Tết to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival) More commonly known by its shortened name Tết, is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam Before New Year's Eve New Year's Eve The NewYear Tết in the three Vietnamese regions can be divided into three periods, known as Tất Niên (Before New Year's Eve), Giao Thừa (New Year's Eve), and Tân Niên (The New Year) This period begins one or two weeks before the actual celebration The general atmosphere leading up to Tết is in the bustle of shopping, decorating the home, cooking traditional Tết food and waiting for relatives to return home The first day of Tết is reserved for the nuclear family Children receive a red envelope containing money from their olders This tradition is called mừng tuổi (happy new age) in the north and lì xì in the south During subsequent days, people visit relatives and friends At Tết every house is usually decorated by hoa mai – Apricot Blossom (in the central and southern parts of Vietnam) or hoa đào – peach Blossom (in the northern part of Vietnam) or hoa ban (in mountain areas) peach Blossom Blossom Apricot In the north or central, the kumquat tree is a popular decoration for the living room during Tết Vietnamese people also decorate their homes with bonsaiand flower plants such as chrysanthemum (hoa cúc),marigold (vạn thọ) symbolizing longevity, ect The traditional greetings are Happy NewYear (“chúc mừng năm mới” and “cung chúc tân xuân” ) People also wish each other prosperity and luck Common wishes for Tết include: Live up to 100 years (Sống lâu trăm tuổi ) Good health, and prosperity (An khang thịnh vượng) Plenty of health (Sức khoẻ dồi dào ) Congratulations and be prosperous (Cung hỉ phát tài ) Money flow in like water (Tiền vô nước) Some traditional food on Tết are: Meat Stewed in Coconut Juice : Thịt kho nước dừa Soursop (mãng cầu) coconut (dừa) papaya (đu đủ), and mango(xoài) Bánh tét and bánh chưng roasted watermelon seeds - Hạt dưa Pickled onion and pickled small Jam: Mứt leeks : Dưa hành, củ kiệu People are delighted to enjoy exciting games during Tết: They bầu cua, cờ also tướng, ném participate còn, chọi in some trâu, ect competitions presenting their knowledge, strength and aestheticism such as: bird competition and ngâm thơ competition Fortune Dos Don'ts One should give people • One shouldn't say or lucky presents: new bad things during clothes, peach branche, Tết bánh chưng (or bánh tét) • One shouldn't sweep and bánh dày, red things the house or empty (red symbolizes out the rubbish to happiness, luckiness, avoid luck and advantages) benefits going with it, especially on the first day of the new year For every country, in every period of history, culture, national traditions and language is the foundation of the social spirit, the motivation and goals of development, soul, strength life of the nation, that nation.(Với quốc gia, giai đoạn lịch sử, sắc văn hóa, truyền thống dân tộc ngôn ngữ tảng tinh thần xã hội, động lực mục tiêu phát triển, linh hồn, sức sống quốc gia, dân tộc đó.)
