Rob McCombe – Partnership Development Manager (PDM) westnorwichpdm@yahoo.com Mob: 07766 952179 Follow us on Twitter: @ WNDSSP / Website: www.wndssp.co.uk CHASING GAMES TAILS Each pupil is given a braid/bib (Tail), which they tuck into a waistband Pupils have to collect as many Tails as possible; they must not hold on to their own tail, must not make physical contact and must not collect their own tail Play the game until all Tails are collected or for a designated period of time The teacher may ask who has collected the most braids or by repeating the game it can be made into a 'beat your previous best' activity Adaptations: Have catchers – once tail is captured – turn into chaser or sit out and “exercise” / Stretches outside playing area Adaptation: Once tail captured you now chase to capture others tails – winners at the end have tails! CHAIN TAG / BLOB TAG Select two or more chasers As soon as the whistle blows the chasers must tag other children who must then hold hands forming a chain As soon as the chain has four members, the children must split to become a pair The game ends when all children have been caught The last pupil to be caught can start another game of chain tag ICE AND SUN Select two children as the 'Ice' and give them blue bibs Select two children as the 'Sun' and give them yellow bibs The 'Ice' children must chase others; [apart from the 'Sun' children] touch them so they freeze Children can only become defrosted when they are touched by the 'Sun' Play the game for a designated amount of time CATERPILLAR TAG Divide the group into partners, with partners holding hands Designate which partners will be the taggers On the go signal, the taggers chase and try to tag the other partners - When tagged, they must freeze To become unfrozen, another set of partners must join hands with this pair This group must now stay together and try to avoid being tagged There is no limit to the size of the group or groups that form from joining with the frozen players Play for a designated time period or until all of the players are frozen Rob McCombe – Partnership Development Manager (PDM) westnorwichpdm@yahoo.com Mob: 07766 952179 Follow us on Twitter: @ WNDSSP / Website: www.wndssp.co.uk SPIDERS AND SCORPIONS Choose four children to be the scorpions Their job is to move around on all fours (belly facing down) trying to sting as many of the other children as possible (touch) The other children are spiders; they have to move around on all fours (belly facing up) If a spider is stung it must hold either one foot or one arm in the air (3 point balance) until all of the spiders are stung or time runs out (A variation on the game is a special spider that delivers an antidote and releases the stung spiders) TOILET TAG Split the class in half – Those who are ‘On/It’ have to tag others When tagged, the child becomes a toilet! They have to kneel on one knee, arm up for the flush and other knee (foot on floor) flat for the toilet seat To be released, someone from your team must go to the loo on you and flush your chain! No one can tag you whilst you are on the loo – swap over after a couple of minutes! A funny, physical and thoroughly enjoyable game CATS AND MICE Two groups of equal size line up facing the teacher If the teacher shouts mice the cats have to chase the mice to a line about 10m away and vice-versa for shouting cats This game is great for awareness and agility and you can make it more fun by pointing in one direction and shouting another! STUCK IN THE MUD / CONTAMINATED MOLECULES Mark out an area – with 2/3 chasers in the area – Once the chasers tag an individual they must stand in a star shape – legs wide apart - they can only be released by a teammate crawling between their legs PROGRESSION - CONTAMINATED MOLECULES Select two or more chasers who are given beanbags or soft balls As soon as the whistle has been blown the chasers must touch as many of the children in the class as possible When a child is touched, he/she must stand still and wait to be released Children can be released by two members of the class who are still free These two members must co-operate by holding hands and encircling the captured pupil, who is then freed The game may end after a designated period of time or when all children have been captured Rob McCombe – Partnership Development Manager (PDM) westnorwichpdm@yahoo.com Mob: 07766 952179 Follow us on Twitter: @ WNDSSP / Website: www.wndssp.co.uk TEAM CHALLENGES SMUGGLERS (Or make up your own name related to a topic.)This is a warm up game using coloured hoops and coloured bean bags Scatter the hoops around the area in which you are working Split the class in half - smugglers or 'goodies' The goodies have a 30 second head start to place bean bags in their correct corresponding coloured hoop On the blow of the whistle, the smugglers 'steal' the bean bags from their correct hoops and place them incorrectly The 'goodies' have to keep going to try and remedy the problem Lots of fun, and gets the heart rate going! DISHES AND DOMES Scatter cones around the area, half up one way and half up the other Split your children into two groups – dishes and domes On command dishes have to turn cones to dish shape, domes turn cones to dome shape Safety- ensure no head collisions! LADDERS First pair up the children and sit them down facing each other, with legs flat and feet touching Now give the pairs numbers 1,2,3 and so on until every pair has a number – label pairs on one side TEAM A and TEAM B the other side You call a number and that pair will jump up and run up the ladder )over the children’s legs) then all the way down the outside of the pairs and back up the ladder and sit down when they get to their original place The first one to sit down in original place is the winner and gets a point for their team Or – As a team, the first pair runs up and around and as soon as they are in place the next person gets up and runs – until the whole team has run round! The first team to all sit down is the winners! COMMANDO Split the class into / teams – Their aim is to reach the opposite side of the hall Each team stands in a line at one side of the hall with their legs spread apart – the person at the back then crawls underneath all of the pairs of legs and then becomes the person in front of the line Once they reach the front they shout “NEXT” so the person at the back knows when to start – slowly but surely the line starts to move forward! TIP: Make the children stand closer together as its easier! Rob McCombe – Partnership Development Manager (PDM) westnorwichpdm@yahoo.com Mob: 07766 952179 Follow us on Twitter: @ WNDSSP / Website: www.wndssp.co.uk TEAM SEATING The task is an exercise to work as a class – learning to be a team! They must also be very careful and help each other as much as possible Children are to stand in a circle as close together as possible – turn and face right – their left arm in the middle of the circle Get the children to move a step in so they are physically body to body with the children in front (It has to be to work!) On three, all the children try to sit – They will find the person behind them will support them, therefore so will the person behind them and so on Weight is evenly distributed! – They will be able to almost hover! See if your children can work in a team! FRUIT BASKET Get the children into a large circle facing inwards and give each child one of four fruits, such as apples, grapes, oranges and bananas Call out one of the fruit names, children given that fruit have to run around the outside of the circle (clockwise) until back into their original place Last one to get back to their place is out and must sit down in the circle When you call “fruit basket”, ALL children run round and stand back in their original place I would this once a few children are out to avoid any collisions You can also call out more than one fruit name to make things a little more interesting! Below is an alternative way you can play this game; Divide the class into groups and have them move into each corner of the area Give each of the groups a fruit name such as apples, oranges, bananas and watermelons Call two of the fruit names and those groups have to run and change places They maintain the same name throughout the game When you call “fruit basket” all of the children run and sit in the centre of the area Rob McCombe – Partnership Development Manager (PDM) westnorwichpdm@yahoo.com Mob: 07766 952179 Follow us on Twitter: @ WNDSSP / Website: www.wndssp.co.uk MISCELLENAEOUS SHARKS Have a set of hoops scattered about the floor, with children moving about 'swimming' The stroke can be changed with older children, e.g front crawl / back stroke / running backwards When the teacher shouts "sharks", the children must get into hoops as quickly as possible (2 children to a hoop) Remove one hoop each time you shout "sharks", and ask the children to help when they are out to still make them feel part of it When only two people are left make them touch the wall at each side of the hall on the way round the hoop to avoid cheating! GUESS THE CORNER (Good activity to split groups / Good Social Me game) Choose one person from the class to be the caller They have to be blindfolded, or close their eyes Name the four corners of the hall / playground (the names can be anything, e.g flowers, food ) the rest of the class has 30 seconds to run to one of those corners The caller then shouts the name of one of the corners Whoever is in this corner is out Continue in this way until there is only one child left LUMPS (Excellent to split pupils into group numbers for activity!) Children are directed to run, hop or skip around the room at the teacher's direction On the teacher's command a number is called, e.g and the children have to get into groups of that number TIGGERS (More able skills required – sending/receiving skills) – Good intro to Games activity Mark out the area of activity Two children are chosen as 'Tiggers' The 'Tiggers' have a beanbag each The 'Tiggers' have to hit the other children below the knees with the beanbags Those children who are hit then join the 'Tiggers' team ‘Tiggers' cannot move with the beanbag The game should focus on passing between the 'Tiggers' GALLOPING LIZZIE (Good sending/receiving game) Have the players find their own place in the play area Choose one player as "it" and they take the sponge ball The game is played by "it" throwing the ball at another player, where the hit player would become "it" and have to take the job of throwing the ball To make the game more interesting, specify a certain style of throwing e.g underarm, left-handed etc Rob McCombe – Partnership Development Manager (PDM) westnorwichpdm@yahoo.com Mob: 07766 952179 Follow us on Twitter: @ WNDSSP / Website: www.wndssp.co.uk SPOT GAMES! SEEK YOUR SPOT Each child has a marker and puts it into a space; children sit on their own marker A few children are initially chosen to leave marker and walk/ run around, until signal and then return to marker (Develop by adding different ways of travelling e.g bouncing, giant strides, gallops, monkey walks…) FISHES As above but half the group remain seated, as rocks, whilst other half tip-toe (swim like fish in a rock pool) in and out of the seated children- avoiding the rocks THE TIDE IS COMING IN As above but children hopping skipping, jumping etc on the beach between the sandcastles, when the adult calls “the tides coming in” they hop, skip, jump back to the safety of their marker THE NUMBERS GAME Develop your pupils’ addition / subtraction skills in this enjoyable game Set up a square, marked out in the four corners of the hall, and marked with numbers 1,2,3,4 respectively On the floor of the hall, spread out, will be sets of numbers from 1-8 (so there will be four 1’s, four 2’s etc in the hall) Pupils will jog around the hall in and out of numbers The teacher shouts a number between and At this, the pupils have to pick up whatever number they are closest to, and using the numbers in the corners have to get the number the teacher shouted using adding or subtraction, e.g if the teacher shouts and the pupil picks up number 5, then that pupil must run to the corner numbered 2, as minus equals There will be a section marked out in the middle of the hall for those that can’t be solved, e.g if the teacher shouts and pupil picks up number then they can't make by adding or subtracting numbers 1, 2, or ADORATION This is a very simple warm-up game Start with the children spaced out Then name an object in the room (e.g something yellow, a wall, your best friend, opposite sex, John Smith, teacher etc.) Then, the children have to run over to that object, get down on their knees and 'worship' the object by repeatedly bowing and exclaiming 'oh, (wall) we love you' Change the object continuously and give children different options so they're not all in one corner (e.g a wall, a window) and identify good examples of ways to get up quickly to the class Rob McCombe – Partnership Development Manager (PDM) westnorwichpdm@yahoo.com Mob: 07766 952179 Follow us on Twitter: @ WNDSSP / Website: www.wndssp.co.uk RUN AROUND THE TEEPEES This is a fun, partner game / warm-up activity which can be played with the whole class Children find a partner Then make a circle One is the Indian and sits on the ground, cross legged The other is the teepee and stands behind their partner with their legs open To play, blow a whistle or ring a bell and tell the children which way round the circle they will be running I usually point the way as the game starts The 'Indians' have to go into their teepees (through their partner's legs) and run as fast as they can around the outside of the circle back to their teepee and enter through their partners legs again and sit down cross legged No one is allowed to push and overtaking must be around the outside of slower runners This game is particularly popular with boys!!! When they have had goes, swap over I usually also call out 'teepees'; the teepees must run around the circle and back to their spot This creates excitement as the children don't know what you will call out! Again, swap roles after a few turns BLACKOUT You'll need a few scarves, pieces of cloth etc for a blindfold Pick around 2-5 kids (depending on how many are in your group/class) and blindfold them up Then get the others to find a space and stay there, but make sure they don't go too far away The blindfolded ones have to try and find the others If they find and touch one, they have to go and get a blindfold and join in too! The last one not found, wins! Tips: Everybody could talk and giggle and shout 'Here I am!' to help the blindfolded, but remember, they cannot move! OR if you don't have enough blindfolds, the ones who have been found have to run around, tapping the blind ones and talking to confuse them!
