Class description - Level: 12 th form student, intermediate - Class size: 42 female students of class 12D1, Yen Hoa high school 2. Time 45 minutes 3. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to : - Know the format of an description passage about a character in a book - Write their own passage - Develop writing skills 4. Anticipated problems: - Because of the time limitation, teacher must prepare carefully 5. Teaching aids: Text book, chalk, picture, wall chart. 6. Procedure: 1 Time Procedure Aims/ Arrangement I. Warm-up 8’ Involve sts in the game: Magic Hat - T hang a wall chart with a list of row, in which there is a word. - Divide class into 4 groups, groups take turn to choose a row, listen to the hints from teacher then guess the word. - Each correct answer score 10p, which group find out the key word first(score 40p) will be the winner. Does it remind you of any story? What is it about? Who is the main character? - Transition : today we will study how to write a description about a character. Sts work together to find out the answers Sts guess the picture and answer questions II. Pre- Writing 8’ Task a: textbook, page 142 - Ask sts to read through the text and do task a, decide whether the sentences are true or false. - After some minutes, ask sts about the content of the passage - Call one student to go to the board and write the answers - Check with the whole class. Sts do task a, individually and compare with their partners Writing Guideline: - T give some guidelines to help sts in writing: A description of a character should say: • Which character you find most interesting/ you admire the most? • The reason why/ how the character was described and how you Sts take notes on their notebook 2 5’ feel about him/her. • The most striking feature of the character and how it impresses you. • What the story is about and what the central problem of the story is, and how it is solved. - The paragraph should includes: • a topic sentence(general information and introduction about the character); • some supporting sentences (provide further information about the character) • a concluding sentence( tell how the character impresses you, your feeling?, etc.) III. while – writing 7’ 15’ Activity 1: Write an outline - Ask sts to think of a story they have read. - Get sts to work in group of 4, write an outline of the description of the character - Remind them to include a topic sentence, supporting ideas and a concluding sentence. The passage should be in about 100 words. Activity 2: Peer correction - Ask two 2 sts from groups to write their paragraph on the board (7’) - After some minutes, T corrects their work with the whole class. (8’) - Ask other sts to take notes on their note book. Activity 3: Write the detailed description - Ask sts to write their own paragraph at home and hand in to the teacher next time. Sts work in groups Sts comment on the two outlines, and take notes Sts write their paragraphs individually IV. Post- writing - sts hand in their paragraphs for correction Sts hand in their papers V.
