I want you to meet my grandfather.” I followed her into the living room where her grandfather was sitting She introduced us, and he reached out his hand He was going to shake hands, but I thought he was expecting me to kiss his hand, so I did He pulled his hand away and looked at me in a strange way as if he did not like what I had done Everyone else in the room looked at me, and my friend started laughing I was very confused I sat down and tried to figure out what had happened Just then, a little boy ran to my friend’s grandfather and jumped into his lap The little boy started to hug and kiss the grandfather When I saw this, I got up and took the little boy by hand and said, ”No.” I guess I said it pretty loudly because the room became very silent and all eyes were on me Hurricanes Hurricanes, which are also called cyclones, exert tremendous power These violent storms are often a hundred miles in diameter, and their winds can reach velocities (speeds) of seventy-five miles per hour or more Furthermore, the strong winds and heavy rain fall that accompany them can completely destroy a small town in a couple of hours The energy that is released by a hurricane in one day exceeds the total energy consumed by humankind throughout the world in one year Synonyms Synonyms, words that have the same basic meaning, not always have the same emotional meaning For example, the words stingy and frugal both mean” careful with money.” However, to call a person stingy is an insult, while the word frugal has a much more positive connotation Similarly, a person wants to be slender but not skinny, and aggressive but not pushy Therefore, you should be careful in choosing words because many so-called synonyms are not really synonyms at all 2.1.3 Parts of the topic sentence( [2], p.23&[3], p.6) The topic sentence has essential parts: TOPIC and the CONTROLLING IDEA The topic names, the subject or main idea of the paragraph The controlling idea makes a specific comment about the topic, which indicates what the rest of the paragraph will say about the topic It limits or controls the topic to a specific aspect of the topic to be discussed Examples: Topic Controlling idea My friend is an honest person My friend is the funniest person I know My friend has a terribly dangerous job Activity 3: Identify the topic and controlling idea in the sentences below Hiking is the best way to explore nature closely My uncle had a frightening experience as a young man Text messaging has become popular among teenagers Effective time management requires four easy steps 5 Every college student should take a computer course Driving on freeway required skill and alertness The spread of HIV can be slowed by educating the public In my opinion, many commercials for cosmetics lie to women Smoking cigarettes is very harmful to our health 10 Water-melons are healthy fruits 11 Living in the countryside is good to the elderly’s health 12 It is necessary for students to attend classes regularly 2.1.4 Tips for writing effective topic sentences([4], p.40 &[5], pp.14-16) Should and shouldn’t: -
