social position promotion and enable the overwhelming majority of people to have the ability to increase their social standing and reshape China’s social environment and stability The large-scale social stratum reorganization process seems to have ended; some situations of social stratum duplication have begun to appear It is helpful to overcome structural instability, but it can form the structural tension and suppress structural vigor, thus, having negative influence on efficiency and fairness in social movements E Issues regarding the “children of the reform and opening up” Famous sociologist GH Elder’s Children of the Great Depression has become a classic to analyze the influence of big events’ effects on individuals’ life courses However, “children of the reform and opening up”, namely “post-1970s” and “post-1980s” young people are completely different from “children of the Great Depression” or “children of the Cultural Revolution” Three conditions caused the “children of the reform and opening up” to become a special generation: first, the birth control policy caused them to be an “only-child” generation and to receive unusual family care and social attention; second, the favorable circumstances and relatively comfortable living conditions that developed after reform and opening up have caused them to lack individual experiences and collective memories of frustrations in the past; third, China’s marketization, informatization, and globalization environment after reform and opening up have reshaped their culture and knowledge structure This generation was often criticized as “the most irresponsible generation”, “the most selfish generation”, “the most rebellious generation”, and “the most coddled generation” by the domestic media, while the overseas media thought that they were a generation of “radical nationalism” However, the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 changed people’s views, the “post-1980s” generation manifested high national spirit, social compassion, and a sense of responsibility in the face of national calamity and accepted the mission of the times with their selfless dedication and cooperative spirit Our research indicated that as compared with their parents’ generation, the “children of the reform and opening up” have on average a higher b1573_Conclusion.indd 213 11/18/2013 2:51:57 PM b1573 People’s a modern lifestyle, and favor expressing their own opinions At the same time, their social attitudes, mainly in their sense of fairness and democratic consciousness are obviously different from other crowds In brief, the “children of the reform and opening up” will become China’s elite strength in development over the next 30 years to support China’s sustainable development; their knowledge quality, collective consciousness, and mental outlook will decide China’s future development trends F Issues on China’s development power Since reform and opening up began 30 years ago, China has introduced the socialist market mechanism through economic restructuring The market mechanism has provided equality of competitive opportunities, thus, mobilizing various social strata for development investment, and ultimately bringing about a greater level of vigor in the total population The benefit pattern has had profound change, income and property differentials are expanding unceasingly, and people are dissatisfied with distribution injustices; in order to solve this problem, the mechanism for fair benefit distribution should be further developed through social restructuring to impel China’s development Other concerns tied to this are tying together democratic rights and an effective socialist political system that can deal with all kinds of challenges and complex aspects to create a more reliable political structural reform to provide new development power Economic opportunity equality, social benefit fairness, and political rights are three sides of the same issue; the current reform must begin with the economic domain and move into the social domain and political realm ultimately providing new, stronger potential for China’s future development www.ebook777.com
