REDD Approximately 35 per cent of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are a result of past deforestation; 18 percent of annual global emissions are from continued deforestation As the rate of deforestation continues unchecked, these numbers will only grow even higher To prevent this, SNV and partners are looking to spearhead new means of encouraging sustainable forest use Reducing Emissions through Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) initiatives reward communities and individuals who protect their forests, providing incentives for adopting a sustainable lifestyle Creating solutions through Promoting REDD and REDD mechanisms preparing for the future In addition to the natural resources that communities depend on, forests provide ecological services to the global climate by reducing the effects of emissions Under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol, communities and enterprises are given benefits for afforestation and reforestation activities, but there continues to be a lack of adequate incentives to protect forests Reducing Emissions through Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) programmes are centred around the idea of ‘compensated reductions,’ where individuals, groups and governments are compensated for not cutting down forests Groups that protect their forests instead of cutting them down for agriculture or timber are given carbon credits in return for protecting these natural resources This is a highly cost-effective way to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere REDD initiatives are especially relevant in the Asia region, where 80 million people – including many ethnic communities – are directly or indirectly forest dependent Forest coverage in Southeast Asia is decreasing three times faster than elsewhere in the world How these forests are managed has a profound impact on the global climate, and REDD mechanisms can provide a market-based solution to encourage communities to stop the trend of deforestation in AsiaSNV and partners are already initiating REDD case studies around the world to measure the effectiveness of the programmes and their effect on the environment and on the poor Recent interest and support for this approach may lead to the inclusion of REDD as part of an international agreement to combat climate change As with all activities which wish to link to the carbon markets, standard methodologies must be used in order for the carbon to be tradeable on the international market Our team of international advisors utilise knowledge sharing and research to help establish these methodologies and plan the best path forward, while carefully monitoring the effects these programmes have on poor communities We are working with governments and public and private organisations in Nepal, Lao PDR and Vietnam to promote REDD awareness and make these countries REDD ready in the coming years Benefiting people and communities • Assists local indigenous communities in securing land tenure • Improves off-farm employment and alternative livelihood education REDD mechanisms have the potential to help reduce the effects of climate change, as well as protect valuable forest lands from destruction and provide the poor and forest-dependent with tangible economic rewards REDD programmes provide the following benefits: Environment Communities • Provides direct benefits to poor forest-dependent communities and households • Protects the resources on which forest-dependent communities rely • Limits the emissions caused by deforestation and forest degradation • Decreases soil erosion and loss of biodiversity caused by deforestation • Increases the range and protects the habitat of natural wildlife species • Promotes more sustainable, community-based forest industries About SNVSNV is a non-profit international development organisation with headquarters in the Netherlands and staff in 35 different countries For over 40 years, we have provided advisory services to national, regional and local governments, entrepreneurs and citizen associations to alleviate poverty With over 900 technical advisors and 100 local teams around the world, we provide expertise in agricultural and forestry products renewable energy, water and sanitation, governance and private sector development SNV builds strong networks across Asia by maintaining both national and district offices in Nepal, Bhutan, Lao PDR, Vietnam and Cambodia We directly engage with key local organisations in diverse geographical settings, ranging from remote
