One day, a cat walked in
“T’ll have chicken soup with rice,” the cat said

the ice cubes under their hats
Quick as a flash, they tossed them on the floor

slammed it behind her
“She'll think twice before she comes in here

Here are some quick and fun ways to use this story to help children learn the word family -ice
*x Explain to children that you are going to read a story that has many words with the -ice sound, made by the letters I, C, and E All these words belong to a group called a word family
K Ask children to find the -ice word ending at the top of the front cover Review aloud with children the sound these three letters make Can they find two words in the title with the -ice sound? K Flip over the book and read the story summary on the back cover Ask children to point out the
words they hear with the -ice sound Explain that the story you are about to read includes many more words that end in -ice Can they help you find them?
