Once there were two mice who had a restaurant

One day, a cat walked in

“T’ll have chicken soup with rice,” the cat said

The mice brought the cat a big bow! of soup But when the cat tasted it, she made a face

So the mice went back to the kitchen

“Try it now, the mice said to the cat

She ate a spoonful

The mice went back to the kitchen to slice some onions and dice some carrots

They threw them in the soup pot and took a taste

“Very nice!” they agreed

Just then, the cat peeked into the kitchen

She looked at the bowl of soup on the counter

She looked at the mice

“I think I know what the soup needs,” said the cat

Then she grabbed the mice

Suddenly, the mice remembered

the ice cubes under their hats

Quick as a flash, they tossed them on the floor

“YEEEEEE-OWWWWWW!” the cat yelled

as she slipped on the ice

“That wasn’t very nice,” the mice scolded the cat Then they pushed the cat out the door and

slammed it behind her

“She'll think twice before she comes in here

again,” they said

And that was the last the mice ever saw of the cat Although, they still get their share

of picky customers

Reading Tips

Here are some quick and fun ways to use this story to help children learn the word family -ice

*x Explain to children that you are going to read a story that has many words with the -ice sound, made by the letters I, C, and E All these words belong to a group called a word family

K Ask children to find the -ice word ending at the top of the front cover Review aloud with children the sound these three letters make Can they find two words in the title with the -ice sound? K Flip over the book and read the story summary on the back cover Ask children to point out the

words they hear with the -ice sound Explain that the story you are about to read includes many more words that end in -ice Can they help you find them?

*x Read aloud the story once for pleasure and enjoy the whimsical illustrations Then reread the book, emphasizing the -ice word ending in the appropriate words Ask children to listen closely and identify all the words that end in -ice (they might raise their hand or clap when they hear one, or you might choose a volunteer to point to the word on the page) As they do so, make a list on chart paper of all the -ice words

K Write each of the words from your list on an unlined index card Use a different color for -ice than the rest of the word Read each word on the cards with children On another reading of the story,
