Lesson plan 12 unit 8 Life in the futre UNIT 8 : LIFE IN THE FUTURE DIVISION OF LESSONS 1. Reading 2. Speaking 3. Listening 4. Writing 5. Language focus ---------------------------------------------- UNIT 8 : LIFE IN THE FUTURE Less on 1 R E ADI NG Period : Date : I. Aims : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - read for specific information.to understand the passage. - express their ideas about advantages and disadvantages of robots. II.Language Content: 1. Grammar: Preposition, The articles 2. Vocabulary: pessimistic, optimistic, pessimist, corporation, depression, security, threaten, terrorist, environment, burden, telecommunication, disappear, space- shuttle, effeicient, fit, achieve, contribute, aspect III.Teaching method: Communicative Approach IV. Teaching aids : pictures, posters, extra board V. Procedure : Teacher’s and students’ activities Content - Divide Ss into 12 groups. - Give each group a poster and a board marker. - Stick 5 pictures on the board and tell Ss to write one sentence/ a phrase describing each picture. - Set a limit time for 4 minutes for Ss to write. - Ask Ss to put the posters on the Warm-up: Game: Picture sentence (see Appendix) Expected: 1. Cars can run on sea water 2. A city on the sea 3. A city on Mars 4. Robots are seen everywhere in schools, factory, homes . 5. The anniversary of 120 th birthday Aims: to introduce the topic of the lesson and to raise students' interest. Lead-in: - Introduce the new lesson to the students. - Do you think these things will happen in the future? - What is your dream life in the future? We don't know for sure what will happen to our future life. Some people have made Teacher A. Loan QUANG TRUNG High school Lesson plan 12 unit 8 Life in the futre board when they have finished. - The first group to have the most correct sentences is the winner. - Put each of the words which have been taught in each circle on the board. - Rub out one of the words but do not rub out the circle. - Get Ss to repeat the words including the rubbed-out word by pointing at the empty circles. - Rub out another word but leave the circle. Point to the words or empty circles and ask Ss to read or remember the words. - Continue until all the circles are empty. The Ss-now have to remember all the words. - Get Ss to come to the board and fill the circles with the correct words. - Get Ss to read the reading passage and answer the questions. - Ask Ss to compare the answers with their partners. - Call on some Ss to write the answers on the board. - Check with the class. optimistic predictions but the others the pessimistic ones. And that's the focus of our lesson today. Before you read : Pre-teaching vocabulary 1.pessimistic [pesi'mistik] (a) (explanation): expecting bad things to happen or to be unsuccessful, (bi quan) + a pessimist (n): a person who always expects bad things to happen (người bi quan) 2. optimistic [opti'mistik] (a) (antonym) >< pessimistic (lạc quan) + an optimist (n) a person who always expects good things to happen (người lac quan) 3. terrorism (n) (explanation) the use of •violent action in-order to achieve political arms or to force a government to act (sự khủng bố) 4. labor-saving (a).(context) (tiết kiệm sức lao động) Example: -It takes less time for my mother to do housework thanks to the modern labor-saving devices such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners and dishwashers. 5. wipe sth out (v) (synonym): destroy or remove sth completely (xoa bo; pha huy) 6. space shuttle (n) (picture + explanation): spacecraft designed to be used for traveling between the earth and a space station, (tau con thoi) 7. depression (n) (translation): (tình trạng suy thoái) + economic depression: suy thoái về kinh tế Checking: What and Where While you read : Task 1: Expected answers 1.pessimists 2.optimists 3.economic depression 4.terrorism 5.wiped out 6.space suttle Task 2: Questions and answers Expected answers 1. Many large corporations will be wiped and millions of jobs will be lost. 2.The security of the earth will be threatened by terrorism as terrorist groups will become more powerful and more dangerous. Loan QUANG TRUNG High school Lesson plan 12 unit 8 Life in the futre - Arrange the class into small groups of four or five. - Tell Ss to look over thetext, find the information to complete the notes about how technology will influence our life in the future. - Give feedback. - Divide the class into 6 groups. - Assign 3 groups to discuss the advantages of robots and the other three the disadvantages of robots. - Invite the groups' ideas to the class. - Give feedback and make comments 3.People will be living in much cleaner environment, breathing fresher air and eating healthier foods. They will also be better looked after by a modern medical system. Domestic chores will be no longer a burden thanks to the inventions of labor-saving devices. 4.They are developments in micro technology- computers and telecommunication. Task 3: Collecting information - Expected: 1. Work: factories will be run by robots, offices will go electronic; many people will work from home. 2. Travel: travelling by space shuttle is very fast, at 15,000kms per hour; cars could run on electricity or methane gas and fitted with computers. After you read : Discussion Suggested ideas: Advantages: + save labor, lighten our work + do difficulties/ hard jobs so that men have more time to enjoy life or do more creative work Disadvantages: + replace human beings in many fields so many people will lose their jobs or go jobless. + people become more independent on robots; we can't work properly when the power /v off or when robots stop working. Writing - Get Ss to write a short paragraph about the advantages and disadvantages of robots. Homework: Ask students to learn the new words by heart and prepare the next part in advance.
