CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION STRATEGIES FOR THE LIVELIHOODS OF COASTAL COMMUNITIES IN RANG DONG TOWN, NGHIA HUNG DISTRICT, NAM DINH PROVICE, VIETNAM Authors: Nguyen Thi Hoa, Nguyen Thi Huyen, Luong Thi Tuyen Class: QH-2010-E Development Economics Instructor: Dr Nguyen Viet Thanh Abstract: Vietnam ranks the 6th in the global rankings of Climate Risk Index (CRI) for the period 1991 to 2010 The damage caused by extreme weather events such as storms, floods for coastal communities in Vietnam is significant each year Total loss in agricultural sector from the most recent storm climbed to VND 8.77 billion by typhoon no.8 2012 Objective of this study is to investigate climate change adaptation strategies for the livelihoods of coastal communities in Rang Dong town, Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province, Vietnam Sustainable Livelihood Frame of DFID is used to analyse livelihood of coastal residents Livelihood assets including financial, physical, human and natural capital are considered as adaptation strategies for coastal communities Research group choose questionnaire interview method in order to survey and collect information Interviews were conducted with 16 commune officials and 79 households in Rang Dong town focusing on drawbacks of livelihood assets The results indicate that livelihood assets not have much adaptability to climate change Knowledge of residents in here about climate change were not real profound, only understanding through words Financial, physical and human capital still showed much weakness Natural capital has being reduced by the impact of climate change An assessment on household’s adaptation revealed that 83% of respondents have not made any measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change causing for the health, water and actions of livelihoods On that basis, there are recommendations, which are made for policy makers to improve the ability to cope of coastal residents to the effects of climate change Key words: Nam dinh, climate change, strategies, livelihood, adaptability  ...being reduced by the impact of climate change An assessment on household’s adaptation revealed that 83% of respondents have not made any measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change causing... causing for the health, water and actions of livelihoods On that basis, there are recommendations, which are made for policy makers to improve the ability to cope of coastal residents to the effects... to improve the ability to cope of coastal residents to the effects of climate change Key words: Nam dinh, climate change, strategies, livelihood, adaptability
