Unlimited Potential: Business Partners for Gender Equality 2015 Women’s Empowerment Principles Annual Event 2015 WEPs CEO LEADERSHIP AWARDS 10 March 2015 The Women’s Empowerment Principles—Equality Means Business initiative annually spotlights business leaders in the vanguard of implementing the WEPs and advancing gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community Held as part of the 2015 WEPs Annual Event- Unlimited Potential: Business Partners for Gender Equality, in observance of International Women’s Day (8 March) and an official side event to the Commission on the Status of Women, the Awards Ceremony highlights concrete and innovative actions taken to advance the Principles and particularly Principle One: Leadership Promotes Gender Equality The five 2015 awardees represent a wide range of industries, sectors and geographic regions This third recognition ceremony salutes the first female CEO WEPs Awards designee Review Process The review process identifies outstanding and innovative initiatives that advance the implementation of the WEPs and gender equality within a company Specifically, the review focuses on actions spearheaded by the CEO that result in concrete, sustainable programmes with measurable impact The nominations are reviewed by members of the WEPs Leadership Group (Note: To avoid any conflict of interest, WEPs Leadership Group members are not permitted to participate in the process if their CEO is a nominee.) Awards Recipients Angélica Fuentes, Chief Executive Officer, Omnilife; Founder, Angelíssima; and Founder and Chair, Angélica Fuentes Foundation (Mexico) Award Category: Benchmarking for Change Recognized as one of Mexico’s five most influential women by Forbes magazine, Angélica Fuentes is CEO and managing shareholder of the global nutritional supplement company Omnilife She also founded and leads Angelíssima, a cosmetics company that offers women an entrepreneurial path to financial independence A dedicated philanthropist and trailblazer on women’s issues, Ms Fuentes serves as a Global Advocate for the United Nations Foundation´s Girl Up campaign She also co-chairs the World Economic Forum’s Mexico Gender Parity Taskforce and serves on Secretary Clinton’s International Council on Women’s Business Leadership In 2014, Ms Fuentes started the first foundation in the world solely dedicated to empowering Latin American women and girls The Angélica Fuentes Foundation focuses on advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality through direct social investment, major partnerships, and public policy change Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Schneider Electric (France) Award Category: Business Case for Action Jean-Pascal Tricoire, 51 years old, joined Schneider Electric in 1986 He was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in 2006 and named Chairman & CEO in April 2013 His career at Schneider Electric has developed largely outside France in operational functions in Italy, China, South Africa and USA Within the General Management, he served as Vice Executive President of the International Operating Division from 2002 before being appointed in 2004 Chief Operating Officer (COO) Moreover, Jean-Pascal is President of the France-China Committee since 2009 Jean-Pascal holds a degree in Electronic Engineering and a MBA Symon Brewis-Weston, Chief Executive Officer, Sovereign Assurance (New Zealand) Award Category: Community Engagement Symon Brewis-Weston is CEO of Sovereign, New Zealand’s largest life insurance company, part of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) group of companies Symon is a true change leader and a passionate advocate of harnessing a diverse workforce to achieve organisational success He believes that in organisations where diversity is valued, people are empowered, and in turn the broader community and marketplace benefits Symon has had career experiences across Asia-Pacific, leading and transforming organisations with expansion agendas, in rapidly changing environments, with diverse workforces He is a trained economist, holds a Bachelor of Economics Degree (Hons) and a Masters Degree in Applied Finance Being an advocate for gender balance and women in leadership is not new to Symon He is a long-time proud sponsor of The Hunger Project and Women in Focus initiatives The Hunger Project is the world’s largest leadership and training organisation working in developing countries, with a goal of empowering people to end their own hunger Women in Focus is a network that empowers business women to grow their organisations and achieve their professional and personal goals These initiatives reinforce Symon’s passion for people and his innovative approach to leadership development Frank Vettese, Managing Partner and Chief Executive, Deloitte Canada (Canada); and Member, Global Executive Committee Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (Global) Award Category: Cultural Change for Empowerment Frank Vettese was elected Managing Partner and Chief Executive in 2012, with a mandate to preserve and grow Deloitte’s position as Canada’s leading professional services firm He is also a member of Deloitte’s global executive team He previously led both the global and Canadian Financial Advisory practices, which, under his leadership, achieved exceptional performance and growth Frank has had a distinguished career, with many accomplishments as a leader at the forefront of the profession He has been recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators, reflecting the positive influence he has had on thousands of students, chartered business valuators, chartered accountants, and national and international business leaders Frank has been a long-standing champion for inclusion and diversity, as evidenced by his role as Chair of the Canadian firm’s Inclusion Council, as co-founder of the Canadian Women’s Initiative, and by launching development programs for emerging women leaders, such as StepUp He was also a strong proponent for the appointment of women to the DTTL Board Frank’s leadership goes beyond his professional career, as an active member of various community boards Alexander Wrabetz, Director General, Österreichischer Rundfunk (Austria) Award Category: Principles Alexander Wrabetz has been the Director General of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) since 2007 During his term of office, ORF expanded to one of the most successful European media companies, holding a marketshare of nearly 40% with its television fleet, as well as a marketshare of 74 % with its 17 radio programmes ORF is equally Austria’s number one in the online sector Wrabetz enabled greater participation of women at all levels by supporting career ambitions of women, thereby facilitating greater business participation of female leaders at different levels within the organization To this end, he implemented the Gender Equality Plan, which was credited in 2013 as a Good Practice example within the European Union by the European Institute for Gender Equality Alexander Wrabetz studied law at the University of Vienna and graduated as Dr jur He started his career at the bank Girozentrale and the Austrian Industries, was director of the companies Voest Alpine and the VAMED-Group In 1998 he was appointed as the Commercial Director of ORF Wrabetz is Member of the Executive Board and the Eurovision Operations Council of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the association of public service broadcasters in Europe ... balance and women in leadership is not new to Symon He is a long-time proud sponsor of The Hunger Project and Women in Focus initiatives The Hunger Project is the world’s largest leadership and training...
