Lesson Plan Unit 11: Sources of energy Section: Listening Time allotted: 45 min. I. Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will able to: - listen to specific information. - express their own ideas about how to protect environment. II. Teaching aids: posters, handouts, textbook. III. Procedure: Time/ Stages Teacher’s activities Students’ activities I. Warm up 4 min. Game: Cross word (Appendix) - Prepare a poster of a word grid with 6 rows. - Ask Ss to work in two groups and take turns to choose a number row. - Give the hints. - If the Ss guess the word correctly, they’ll get one mark. Otherwise, another group can give the correct answer and score the point. The group that has more points will be the winner. - Check Ss’ understanding of the instruction. - Ask Ss to play the game. - Declare the winner. Lead in: Unit 11: Sources of energy (cont.) Section: Listening - Work in groups. - Listen carefully. - Answer the teacher’s questions. - Choose a number row. - Give the answers. II. Pre – listening 10 min. 1. Pre – teaching vocabulary - Use some techniques to elicit the new words. - Give model twice. - Ask Ss to repeat after the teacher. - Write the new words on the board. - Ask Ss to read aloud. (Whole class  individuals) 1. ecologist: a scientist who studies ecology (Explanation): nhà sinh thái học. 2. unlimited: the antonym of limited (Antonym): không giới hạn 3. conserve: to avoid wasting something (Explanation): giữ gìn, bảo vệ. 4. Fertilize: what do you say “bón phân” in - Realize the new words. - Listen. - Repeat after the teacher. - Write the new words into their notebook. - - 1 - - English? (Translation): Fertilize. 5. Renewable: Solar energy, wind power are the renewable sources. So, what does “renewable” mean? (Example): có thể phục hồi lại. * Checking: - Slap the board. * Brainstorming: - Ask Ss to think of kinds of energy. - Expected answers: Solar, nuclear, wind power, water power, oil, gas…. - Play the game. - Go to the board and write down the answers. III. While – listening 20 min. Activity 1: Multiple choices (6 min.) * Prediction: - Ask Ss to read the task 1 p. 129 carefully. - Ask them to give prediction. - Play the tape twice. - Ask Ss to read aloud the answers. - Ask Ss to listen again and check the answers. - Give feedback. Expected answers: 1.D 2.C 3.D 4.A 5.B - Read the task 1 carefully. - Predict the answer. - Listen to the tape carefully and give the answers. - Check the answers. Activity 2: Gap – fill - Ask Ss to read the task 2 p. 129 carefully. - Ask them to predict the word that will fill into each bank. - Play the tape twice. - Ask Ss to give their answers. - Ask Ss to listen again and check the answers. - Give feedback. - Read the passage carefully. - Predict the word that will fill into each blank. - Listen to the tape. - Give the answers. - Listen to the tape again and check the answers. Activity 3: Completing the table. - Ask Ss to work in pairs. - Give the handout. - Work in pairs. - Read the handout - - 2 - - Kinds of energy Sola r Nuclear - Ask Ss to listen again and complete the table. - Ask some pairs to give the answers as they finish. - Give feedback. This is the handout: Listen to the tape again and tick which resource is renewable and which is nonrenewable. Give the reasons. Fossil fuel  unlimited Solar energy  unlimited carefully. - Listen to the tape again and do the task. - Give the answers. - Check the answers. IV. Post – listening 10 min. - Ask Ss to work in pairs. - Give them the handout. - Give instructions. - Model the conversation with one student. - Ask some pairs to act out the conversation as they finish. - Give feedback. * This is the handout: Imagine that you’re environmentalist. Try your best to persuade people to use green energy. Using the given cues. + Student A: Safe, clean, unlimited, renewable. + Student B: Expensive, limited, nonrenewable, no wind. - Work in pair. - Read the handout carefully. - Listen carefully. - Act out the conversation. E L E C T R I C I T Y 1. Nowadays, this weapon is often used in wars. 2. It makes trees swing and we feel comfortable if we have it on hot summer days. 3. Something like oil, gas, coal…. 4.
