PREPOSITIONS PREPOSITIONS FOLLOWING FOLLOWING ADJECTIVES ADJECTIVES GIÔÙI TÖØ THEO SAU TÍNH TÖØ Look at the example: *Burning coal and oil releases other gases harmful to humans. -The adjective “harmful” is followed by the preposition “to”. -Many adjectives are used with particular prepositions and these must be learned by heart. “to” following such adjectives as acceptable, accustomed, agreeable, contrary, harmful, important, kind, likely, lucky, open, pleasant, similar… *She’s always been very kind to me. (Lúc nào bà ấy cũng tử tế với tôi.) *He’s accustomed to getting up early. (Anh ta quen thức dậy sớm.) Compare: *Thank you. It was very kind of you to help me. *You are very kind to me “of” following such adjectives as afraid, ahead, aware, capable, confident, full, fond, proud… *“Are you afraid of dogs ?” – “Yes, I’m afraid of them.” (Bạn có sợ chó không? –Vâng, có ạ. *“Did you know they were married ?” – “No, I wasn’t aware of that.” (Bạn có biết họ đã lập gia đình rồi chứ? – Không, tôi không biết điều đó.) “for” following such adjectives as available, difficult, late, perfect, famous, responsible, useful… *Florence is famous for its art treasures. (Đa số học sinh đã có mặt tại cuộc họp) “with” following such adjectives as acquainted, crowded, friendly, bored, fed up, popular, disappointed, satisfied… *The city centre was crowded with tourists. (Trung tâm thành phố đông đúc khách du lòch.) *My teacher is always friendly with his students. (Thầy tôi luôn thân thiện với học trò của mình) “in” following such adjectives as interested, rich, successful… *Are you interested in art and architecture? (Bạn có thích thú nghệ thuật và kiến trúc không? *Vietnam is rich in coal. (Việt Nam có nhiều than đá.) “from” following such adjectives as absent, different, safe… *The film was quite different from what I expected.
