Divide the class into two groups A and B - Stick the pictures of things (or draw thing) on the board - Tell Ss to find out the treasure, the word of the day by combining the first letters in the names of these things.(Don’t give them the names) - The group that can first find out the word will be the winner - Check Ss’ understanding of the instruction and have them start the game - Teacher declares the winner b/ Example: UNIT 1: A FRIENDSHIP (Reading) Here are the pictures: Flower Ring Ice- cream Eye Expected answer: Nurse Dog The word of the day->: FRIEND 2/ Five Little Things: a/ Rule: -Ask Ss to work in group of four - Tell Ss to listen to instructions and write down five things as required on a piece of paper - The group that finishes the first thing and gets all correct will get one point - The group that has more points will win the game - Check Ss’ understanding of the instruction and have them start the game b/ Example: UNIT 1: A FRIENDSHIP (Listening) These are the suggested instructions: Write down places where you often meet your close friend Write down things you often share with your close friend Write down qualities you need in a good friend Write down adjectives describing appearance Write down adjectives describing character or personality Expected answer: home, school, park, cinama, evenig class… notes, cakes, homework, school things, joy, sadness… honesty, loyalty, unselfishness, helpfulness, good-hearted… tall, short, good-looking, well-dressed, stout,… reserved, out-going, sociable, studious, practical, sympathetic,… 3/ The Tied And Blind Men Game: a/ Rule: - Divide the class into two groups and draw two circles on the board - Ask two representatives of each group to go to the board One student will be the tied man The other is the blind one - Cover each “blind man” with a piece of cloth and ask the “tied man” to tell the blind man how to draw a face inside the circle drawn beforehand on the board - After minute, the first pair to finish the face will be the winner If they both finish before the deadline, the pair whose face they have drawn is more goodlooking is the winner - Ask students to name parts of the body on the face and then ask them to mention some add to describe those parts b/ Example: UNIT 1: A FRIENDSHIP (Speaking) 4/ Name Poem: a/ Rule: - Ask each student to use his/her partner’s name to write an acrostic poem He/she has to use the adjectives beginning with the letter of the name to describe his/her friend’s personality or appearance - Call on some Ss to write their poems on the board - Check with the class b/ Example: UNIT 1: A FRIENDSHIP (Writing) Tien is my friend Talented Intelligent Easy-going Nice Thang is my friend Tall and thin Helpful to everyone Active in class Neat and tidy Generous in giving helps 5/ Mime Your Past: a/ Rule: - Think of an incident from the past that T can briefly mime in class - Divide the class into two groups A and B - Do the mime and stop after each action - Write the vocabulary generated by the mime on the board if necessary - Ask Ss in each group to say what you did - Each correct answer earns one point - The group with more points wins - Check Ss’ understanding of the instructions and start the game b/ Example: UNIT 2: PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (Speaking) - One morning I got up late It was half past six and school began at seven - I quickly washed, brushed my teeth, dressed, jumbled on my motorbike and drove to school - I went straight into the class and greeted the students - After two or three minutes, the students began laughing - I couldn’t understand why - Suddenly, I looked down and realized I had put on one brown shoe and one yellow shoe! - Ask one student to retell the story 6/ Guessing Things: “What is it?” a/ Rule: - Divide the class into groups A and B and ask Ss to guess what it is - Read aloud some facts about the thing one by one - The group giving the correct answer first wins b/ Example: UNIT 2: PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (Listening) + It destroys buildings, houses and forests + It can kill people + It gives out a lot of smoke + You need water to put it out - The group giving the correct answer first wins - Expected answers: A fire 7/ Tongue Twisters: a/ Rules: - The student who can speak the given sentence 10 times quickly within 15 seconds without making a mistake is the winner b/ Example: UNIT 2: PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (Language Focus) Ss read this sentence: Singing sam sung songs on the sinking sampan - Introduce the sounds /n/, /m/ and / / 8/ On What Occasion? a/ Rule: -Divide the class into two groupsA and B - Stick eight pictures on the board - Ask Ss in each group to identify the holidays and celebrations in the USA and write them on the board - The group with more correct words is the winner b/ Example: UNIT 3: A PARTY (Reading) Key: Chistmas Thanksgiving New Year Birthday Labour Day Picnic 9/ Procedure: a/ Rule: -Divide the class into groups A and B -Place a pack of cards on the desk face down 10 Independence Day Wedding biological, economic, political features A hill of impressive height Vertical line: Chicago Note: Ss are suggested to use simpler words when explaining the words so that it will be easier for Ss to find the word The group with more points is the winner p s u a g n e o 27/ Guessing game: s r x d m c h i c a g o a i v u v n e r e e r s i o n e u o n g t r a a i p n h y a/ Rule: - Divide class into groups - Provide three clues for a given word Ss have to guess the word If Ss guess the word in the first clue, they get 30 points, 20 points in the second clue and 10 in the third clue - The group which has more points is the winner b/ Example: UNIT 7: THE MASS MEDIA (Listening) - Provide three clues about the word News/ News Broadcast Ss have to guess the word If Ss guess the word in the first clue, they get 30 points, 20 points in the second clue and 10 in the third clue It is one of the radio programs It broadcasts daily and live from radio station It updates you with the latest information, current affairs domestically and internationally Answer: News/ News Broadcast 28/ Brainstorming: 27 a/Rule: - Ask students to find out words related to the given topic - Divide the class into teams, one using yellow chalk and the other red chalk - Get students to go to the blackboard and write all the words related to the topic in three minutes - The group with more words will be the winner b/ Example: UNIT 1: FRIENDSHIP (Speaking) - Ask students to think of the adjectives used to describe body build and hair thin body build * Possible answers: curly hair - fat - straight - slim - long - tall - short - short - overweight black/dark - color - slender blond/fair brown grey *UNIT15: CITIES (Speaking) - Ask students to find out short adjectives and long adjectives they have learnt - Call on some Ss to go the board and follow T's directions Ss who not follow the directions correctly will be the loser Note: This activity can be interesting when Ss are required to follow directions like turn right, turn left, go ahead, go past the door 30/ Quiz a/ Rule: - Divide the class into groups - Let Ss listen to pieces of popular songs relating to the given topic - The group that can name more songs will win the game - Check Ss’s understanding of the instructions and let them start the game 29 b/Example: UNIT 1:A FRIENDSHIP (Listening) - Divide the class into groups - Let Ss listen to pieces of popular songs relating to friendship (Ex: Season in the sun, You are my sunshine, Ngồi lại bên nhau, Mong ước kỷ niệm xưa, Những người bạn bên tơi) - The group that can name more songs will win the game - Check Ss’s understanding of the instructions and let them start the game 31/ Pelmanism: a/ Rule: - Prepare 10 cards with number (from to 10) on one side and 10 words with their opposites on the other - Stick 10 cards on the board so students can only see the numbers - Divide class into teams and ask them to choose numbers, turn the cards over, if they match, that team gets one mark The next team continues - Go on until all cards are turned over The team which has more marks win the games b/ Example: UNIT 15 :CITIES (Language focus) - Prepare 10 cards with number (from to 10) on one side and 10 adjectives with their opposites on the other - Stick 10 cards on the board so students can only see the numbers - Divide class into teams and ask them to choose numbers, turn the cards over, if they match eg: cheap - expensive, that team gets one mark The next team continues - Go on until all cards are turned over The team which has more marks the games 30 different small modern 32/ Shark Attack: short expensive big long cheap old same a/ Rule - Cut out a shark (or crocodile) and a school girl/ boy from card - Draw some steps, then stick the cut out girl/boy on top of the steps, the shark is in the sea - Draw some gaps for the word - favor - Get students into teams (or ask them as a whole class) for a letter in the alphabet They have to try to guess the word If their guess is wrong, the girl/ boy has to step down If their guess is right, they will get one mark The game continues until students find out the word - favor and the shark can't eat the girl / boy b/ Example: UNIT 15: CITIES ( Reading) 33/ Memory game (Kim's game): a/ Rule: - Show the picture to the Ss and ask them to observe it carefully, let them look at the picture for about 20"then put it away - Divide the class into teams - Ask Ss (one student in each team at a time) to go to the board and write as many words showing things in the picture as possible - Tell Ss the team with the most right words is the winner b/ Example: 31 UNIT 8: THE STORY OF MY VILLAGE (Reading) - Show the picture to the Ss and ask them to observe it carefully, let them look at the picture for about 20"then put it away - Divide the class into teams - Ask Ss (one student in each team at a time) to go to the board and write as many words showing things in the picture as possible - Get Ss, one by one, to go to the front of the class, each student says out a word until they make a meaningful sentence At the end, ask the whole group to repeat the sentence b/ Example: UNIT EXPERIENCE (Language Focus) Teacher: Yesterday S1: I S2: went S3: shopping S4: and S5: bought S6: a lot of S7: things S8: ………… 38/ Find things in common: a/ Rule: - Ask Ss to think of things they often prepare for A CELEBRARION and write them down on a piece of paper - Divide the class into sides - Choose one student randomly in a side and ask him/her call out his or her words while the student in the other side check () the words on their paper same as that student's - The students to have the most same answers will get good mark 34 b/ Example: - Ask Ss to think of things they often prepare for Tet and write them down on a piece of paper - Divide the class into sides - Draw dashes on the board, each dash is for a letter of the word - Have Ss guess the letters, one by one - For every wrong guess, draw a line (from to10 Ss will lose the game if they guess wrong 10 times b/ Example: UNIT 7: POPULATION (Reading) (p) (o) (p) (u) (l) (a) (t) (i) (o) (n) 35 40/ Topic and songs: a/ Rule: - Draw squares with the topics as shown on the board: - Divide class into groups: Tom and Jerry - Set a time limit of minutes - Each group takes turns to choose a topic and sing part of a song about that topic within 15 seconds One correct song gains the group one point.If the group fails to sing that song, no points awarded for that turn - Play continues until the time is up - Keep a running total of points for each group on the board - The group with more points wins b/ Example: UNIT 8: CELEBRATIONS (Reading) New Year Christmas III/ CONCLUSION: Mother Father Teachers Children In remote and mountainous areas, especially, in private schools teachers face to particular problems with large classes, weak pupils, limited resources, and old fashioned textbooks, which make many of the new methods in teaching difficult to use effectively Pupils are dependent on teachers and remain PASSIVE LEARNERS They will not really learn to speak English, but only to reproduce artificial language in the classroom Pupils read the passages aloud from the books, repeat long dialogues in a mechanical way and learn language off-by -
