Part IV. reading Exercise 7. Read the passage and do the tasks that follow. Marie Curie, the daughter of a secondary-school teacher, was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867. She received a general education in local schools and some scientific training from her father. As a brilliant and mature student with a rare gift of concentration, Marie harbored the dream of a scientific career which was impossible for a woman at that time. But lack of funds forced her to work as a private tutor. And in 1891, the shy Marie, with very little money to live on, came to Paris to continue her studies at the Sorbonne. In spite of her difficult living conditions, she worked extremely hard. She passed a physics degree with flying colors, and went on to take another degree in mathematic. She met Pierre Curie in the School of Physics in 1894 and in the following year they were married. From then on, they worked together on their research. Pierre often helped her, and they devoted all their time to working in their laboratory. In 1903, Marie became the first woman to receive a Doctor of Science degree from the Sorbonne.
