UNIT DESCRIPTIVE ESSAYS UNIT G OALS Descri ptive organization What is a descriptive essay? - Definition - It is an essay to describe a person, a thing, a place, or an event - The purpose : to make our readers see, taste, smell, hear , and feel what we have seen, tasted, smelled, heard, and felt - The organization of a descriptive essay ◦ Introduction ◦ Body ◦ Conclusion DESCRIPTIVE ORGANIZATION INTRODUCTION - Hook: introduces the person, thing , place or event in the description and gets the reader’s attention Background inf : helps the readers understand more about the person, thing , place or event to be described - events: - time/place to celebrate - the meaning of the celebration - people involved in the celebration - person: - the relationship between that person and the writer - name/age/ job - the person’s history/ current situation - thing: - - place: time to get it/ place to get it who gave it to you its usage the object’s history/ current situation - The importance of the object - location of the place/ How to get there - reasons to come there - the history/ current situation of the place - Thesis statement: - topic: the object to be described - controlling idea: comment/ attitude/ opinion about the topic - plan: what features to be described? Example essay: Introduction I have suffered a great deal because of a terrible addiction to pizza Basically, I enjoy pizza too much In fact, I enjoy it so much that I won’t share it, not even with my mother People in my hometown of Cabimas, Venezuela, laugh at me and call me the Pizza King of Cabimas Actually, it is a name that I am proud of I have eaten pizza in many places, and none is as good as the pizza of Cabimas (Adapted from Savage, A., & Shafiei, M., 2012, p.34) ◦ Hook: - suffered a great deal because of a terrible addition to pizza ◦ Background information: (current situation) - enjoy Pizza so much, not share it - People laugh at me - call me pizza king ◦ Thesis statement: I have eaten pizza in many places, and none is as good as the pizza of Cabimas 2 BODY: - Most of the description details are in the body paragraph They are organized in the order of space - Details chosen have to satisfy the readers’ imagination - Adjectives, adverbs are frequently used to make the description more vivid - Prepositional phrases are used to specify the location or position in space - Comparison should be used to make the description more descriptive and expressive The best place to eat pizza in Cabimas is at Papa’s Customers have to wait in line to get a table, but the wait is worth it Once they are seated, pizza-lovers can choose from many varieties of pizza, such as pizza with shrimp and smoke oysters or pizza with pine nut and garlic, but my favorite is the sausage and pepperoni First of all, it is big When the waiter put it in front of me, I feel happy because I will get enough to eat It smells of garlic, oil and spices Moreover, it looks delicious, too The sauce oozes out from under layer of rich melted cheese The best part is the first bite I sink my teeth into a slightly crunchy crust, thick tomato sauce, and gooey cheese, and I am in heaven I can eat two of these pizza in one night even though I know I will have a stomachache afterwards Example: Body paragraph ◦ Scenes: Papa’s - Customers have to wait in line to get a table - varieties of pizza: pizza with shrimp and smoke oysters or pizza with pine nut and garlic, sausage and pepperoni ◦ Favorite pizza to be described - smells of garlic, oil and spices - looks delicious, big + sauce oozes out from under layer of rich melted cheese - taste + thick tomato sauce, and gooey cheese - writer’s feeling: + happy + in the heaven CONCLUSION - Restate the main idea, using different words and phrases - Summarize the supporting points in the essay - Give the final thought or comment Example: Conclusion Now that I am in the United States, I am trying different kinds of pizzas here So far, some of them are delicious, but I am convinced that the best pizza in the world is still at Papa’s restaurant, a couple of blocks from the house where I grew up ◦Restate the main idea, using different words and phrases - but I am convinced that the best pizza in the world is still at Papa’s restaurant ... many places, and none is as good as the pizza of Cabimas (Adapted from Savage, A., & Shafiei, M., 20 12, p.34) ◦ Hook: - suffered a great deal because of a terrible addition to pizza ◦ Background...
