questions, but aiming to have learners read extensively for pleasure The approach follow strictly Day and Bamford (2002) guideline of having learners choose books and read on their own pace for general comprehension and enjoyment (Day and Bamford 1998; Prowse 1999) It was conducted inthe Vietnam context with English as a foreign language (EFL) inAustraliaInternationalEnglishCenter (AIEC) during a period of nine weeks from August 1st to October 3rd in 2015 37 learners (N=37) at intermediate level from 18 to 22 years old who are taking a two-year communication course taught by the researcher inAustraliaInternationalCenter (AIEC) They were invited to join into theextensivereading program At the beginning, the researcher met the participants in her AIEC to discuss the materials and provide reading diary for recording during the treatment time Learners were given instruction to select an easy interesting book, and to read as much as possible, preferably at least one book a week Keeping and completing thereading diaries in order to submit forthe researcher in late of week ninth ofthe treatment time The current research aimed at investigating two questions First, what patternsof ER thelearners employ during the period of ER practice Second, thelearners hold a positive attitude toward ER after their ER practice Three main instruments were used to collect data to achieve the current research purposes First, reading diary was used to collect data to answer what patternsof ER thelearners employ during the period of ER practice Reading diary was considered one ofthe key instrument to collect dada for such a primarily qualitative research Second, the post experiment questionnaire was delivered and collected after the treatment to gather data to answer if the learners’ hold a positive attitudes towards ER after their ER practice Third, the in- depth interview was also considered a supplement forthe interpretation ofthe results oftheattitude questionnaire The findings suggest four pattern of ER that thelearners employed during nine weeks and provide conclusive evidence of learners’ positive attitude towards ER iv Table of Contents Chapter Introduction can read twice or three time if I still don’t understand I try to guess the main idea because I don’t understand all and I’m satisfied with my guessing I think I want to read more I think I understand more than I think I read the interesting title and try to guess what I am going to read It’s quite exciting to that I’m curious about what happened next so I have to read more I can understand 90% ofa text and it really motivates me to read I want to read more I think I can guess correctly the main idea ofa story even though there are some new words ReadingEnglish is more enjoyable than before inthe dictionary It made me know more words ER made me know more vocabulary I was not happy if I didn’t know the meanings of unknown words After looking up the words inthe dictionary, I could remember them since then I’m independent from the dictionary from now since I can guess the main idea better Readinga lots teach me how to guess the main idea if the text has some new words I can read faster I enjoy various kinds of stories I would memorize the words which were interesting, easy to memorize and show many times inthe article I can see and learn many idioms that the native speakers use in everyday communication I can learn new vocabulary because it shows up frequently in many reading texts and I will look it up Extensivereading really help me to memorize vocabularies I would memorize those words which were interesting, easy to memorize and show many times inthe article I’m busy therefore whenever I’m free I like to read as much as possible I read one story a night before but now I increase the number to two or three I read the story again if I don’t understand it at the first time I gradually grew more confident in my reading ability Surprised! I read five stories each weeks That’s my love forreading 95 Week 400 headwords In free time 400 headwords In free time Week Week 400 headwords In free time I always know reading is good to enrich my vocabulary knowledge I know some new words whenever I read Remember some colloquial expression is helpful for my speaking I know a couple of new words and expression I am certain I learned new words by guessing meaning from context It helped me learn new vocabulary because I was forced to look up key words to gather the main idea after readinga story, I can remember to new vocabularies if I saw them many times I can also know how to use them because I did see them inthe context ofthe story My reading ability improves very quickly I read some stories again since I find they give me good moral lessons I’m busy but I still remain five stories a week I found the topics interesting because they were about things I didn’t know about It was great to have the freedom to choose what you are to read I enjoyed it because it was a mixture of entertainment and learning The stories (i.e grade readers) are very interesting Reading is not difficult if you read more often I think I like reading so far Thanks to this course, I can read faster and more accurately Extensivereading really can help me to memorize vocabularies I would memorize those words which were interesting, easy to memorize and show many times inthe article made gains in vocabulary and comprehension I am proud of being able to read long English texts 96 Appendix C4: Summary of Learners’ Diary in Pattern Week Kind of stories Time forreading per week 400 headwords In free time Week 400 headwords In free time 400 headwords In free time 400 headwords In free time Week Week Feeling in each week / reasons why you stop know how to read They are seemed to be written for me Words are simple and easy to understand So I pay more attention for learning the way native speaker express their thinking I can learn a lots form reading I don’t need dictionary since I can guess I try to read a 700 headwords story and I can read fast I feel sorry since I just read this week I was surprised to find out that I didn’t have to look up every word in order to understand a text; that made me more confident and faster It made me better at reading speed and comprehension I think I read faster I’m ina vacation and I bring copiers with me and I read this week I bet I am better at reading now than before I really enjoy readinginEnglish when I can guess the main idea and then read as comfortable as in Vietnamese I try 700-headwords stories and I found them easy to understand too I’m more confident in my reading skill I guess the main idea when I encounter new words I want to read more but I have a part time job and can just read in my free time after 10 P.M 97 Week 400 headwords In free time 400 headwords In free time 400 headwords In free time 400 headwords In free time Week Week Week Week 400 headwords 700 more When I don’t read in free time I feel uneasy like I’m losing some things I think my reading ability is better I just look up the dictionary when I cannot guess out the meaning ofa word that preventing me from understanding the main idea ofthe whole text ER made me gain more words and more understanding from the texts It made me realize that although there were some sentences I didn’t understand, I could understand the stories because of my imagination I’ll continue to read inthe summer when I have much free time Reading is useful for gaining new words and new expression I think my reading ability is better I’m happy since I learnt how to guess new words’ meaning from the context It is really good It does help me read faster and I don’t need to look up every word I read so much now and I’m proud of myself I can remember just few new words but the most important is I can understand and develop my reading ability I’m also more confident in my reading skill 98 Appendix C5 :
