D VERBS FOLLOWED BY EITHER “ TO INFINITIVE” OR “ GERUND”

GROUP A: VERBS + GERUND/ TO INFINITIVE WITH NO OR LITTLE DIFFERENCE IN MEANING

Examples 1 It began to rain/ raining two hours ago

GROUP B: VERBS + GERUND/ TO INFINITE WITH DIFFERENCE IN MEANING

1 remember / forget/ regret + to –inf : ( to inf được dùng để chỉ việc sẽ diễn ra sau remember/ regret/ forget : nhớ/

quên/ hối tiếc vì phải làm gì)

remember/ forget/ regret + gerund : ( gerund được dùng để chỉ việc đã diễn ra trước remember/ regret/ forget: nhớ/

quên/ hối tiếc là đã làm gì) Example : I remember seeing the Alps for the fist time The sight was impressive ( I saw the Alps  I remember )

Judy always remember to lock the door ( Remember  lock )

2 try + to inf ( “try” trong trường hợp này có nghĩa là “cố gắng”) : : I will try my best to become the brightest student of all try + gerund ( “ try” trong trường hợp này có nghĩa là “thử” ) : She tried eating some cakes and said they were delicious

3 need / want+ to inf ( “ to inf” mang nghĩ achủ động – cần làm ) : I need to water the flowers

need / want+ gerund ( gerund” mang nghĩa bị động – cần được làm ) : The flowers need watering / to be watered

4 stop + to inf * ( tạm dừng một việc để bắt đầu 1 viêc khác – “công việc khác “ lúc này được mô tả bằng “ to inf”)

She was listening to music when the phone rang, so she stopped to answer it ( that means “ stop listening to music to answer the phone)

stop + gerund ( dừng hẳn việc đang làm – việc được dừng hẳn này được mô tả bằng “ gerund”

He stopped smoking because he knew it was harmful to his health ( he doesn’t smoke any more)

Exercise 1 : Supply the correct form of the verbs in parentheses ( to infinitive or gerund)
