An Ounce of Prevention
There are some diseases for which we know no cure For many of these, however, scientists have been able to discover a means of prevention Smallpox is such a disease In the 18th century, millions of people died of smallpox, while many others who recovered from the disease were left scarred for life Today, it is rare to find a case at all:
By 1780, doctors had noticed that once a person had smallpox, he became immune to it From this observation, the theory of inoculation was developed Inoculation is a way of deliberately giving a person
a disease by placing diseased matter under the skin When this is done, the person may develop a mild case of the disease, but from then on he is safe from a severe attack
Trang 3Using this principle, an English doctor named Edward Jenner set to work against smallpox He found that persons who had had a milder disease called cowpox could not catch smallpox The cowpox seemed
to make them immune By taking some bacteria from the arm of a person who was ill with cowpox, and giving it to a healthy person, Jenner found that he could transfer the immunity Jenner's process came to be known as vaccination, from the Latin word vacca, meaning "cow." Because of vaccination, smallpox, one
of man's greatest enemies, has been practically wiped out

C transferring immunity from one person to another
D protecting cows from cowpox
34 Inoculation against smallpox means
A giving a person some medicine to take
B placing diseased matter under his skin
C injecting him with some drugs
D deliberately coming into contact with smallpox patients
35 Which sentence is NOT true?

B People who have been ill with cowpox are immune to smallpox
C Vaccination can prevent smallpox
D In the 18th century, millions of people died of smallpox

In the last third of the nineteenth century a new housing form was quietly being developed In 1869 the Stuyvesant, considered New York’s first apartment house, was built on East Eighteenth Street The
Trang 5building was financed by the developer Rutherfurd Stuyvesant and designed by Richard Morris Hunt, the first American architect to graduate from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris Each man had lived in Paris, and each understood the economic and social potential of this Parisian housing form But the Stuyvesant -
was at best a limited success In spite of Hunt’s inviting facade, the living pace was awkwardly arranged Those who could afford them were quite content to remain in the more sumptuous, single-family homes,
leaving the Stuyvesant to young married couple and bachelors
The fundamental problem with the Stuyvesant and the other early apartment buildings that quickly followed, in the late 1870’s and early 1880’s, was that they were confined to the typical New York building lot That lot was a rectangular area 25 feet wide by 100 feet deep - a shape perfectly suited for a
row house The lot could also accommodate a rectangular tenement, though it could not yield the square,
well-lighted, and logically arranged rooms that great apartment buildings require But even with the awkward interior configurations of the early apartment buildings, the idea caught on It met the needs of a large and growing population that wanted something better than tenements but could not afford or did not want row houses
So while the city’s newly emerging social leadership commissioned their mansions apartment houses and hotels began to sprout on multiple lots, thus breaking the initial space constraints In the closing decades of the nineteenth century, large apartment houses began dotting the developed portions of New York City, and by the opening decades of the twentieth century, spacious buildings, such as the Dakota and the Ansonia finally transcended the tight confinement of row house building lots From there it was only a small step to building luxury apartment houses on the newly created Park Avenue, right next to the fashionable Fifth Avenue shopping area

VI Read the following passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D)) for each of the questions
Quite different from storm, surges are the giant sea waves called tsunamis, which derive their name from the Japanese expression for “high water in a harbor” These waves are also referred to by the general public as tidal waves, although they have relatively little to do with tides Scientists often refer to them as seismic sea waves, far more appropriate in that they do result from undersea seismic activity
Tsunamis are caused when the sea bottom suddenly moves, during an underwater earthquake or
volcano, for example, and the water above the moving earth is suddenly displaced This sudden shift of
water sets off a series of waves These waves can travel great distances at speeds close to 700 kilometers per hour In the open ocean, tsunamis have little noticeable amplitude, often no more than one or two
meters It is when they hit the shallow water the coast that they increase in height, possibly up to 40 meters
Tsunamis often occur in the Pacific because the Pacific is an area of heavy seismic activity Two areas of the Pacific well accustomed to the threat of tsunamis are Japan and Hawaii Because the seismic activity that causes tsunamis in Japan often occurs on the ocean bottom quite close to the islands, the tsunamis that hit Japan often comes with little warning and can therefore prove disastrous Most of the tsunamis that hit the Hawaiian Islands, however, originate thousands of miles away near the coast of Alaska, so these tsunamis have a much greater distance to travel and the inhabitants of Hawaii generally
have time for warning of their imminent arrival
Tsunamis are certainly not limited to Japan and Hawaii In 1755, Europe experienced a calamitous
tsunami, when movement along the fault lines near the Azores caused a massive tsunami to sweep onto the
Portuguese coast and flood the heavily populated area around Lisbon The greatest tsunami on record
occurred on the other side of the world in 1883 when the Krakatoa volcano underwent a massive explosion, sending waves more than 30 meters high onto nearby Indonesian islands; the tsunami from this volcano actually traveled around the world and was witnessed as far away as the English Channel

A tidal waves B tides C storm surges D underwater earthquakes
52 According to the passage, all of the following are true about tidal waves EXCEPT that
A they are the same as tsunamis
B they are caused by sudden changes in high and low tides

53 The world “displaced” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to
A located B not pleased C filtered D moved

A cause severe damage in the middle of the ocean
B generally reach heights greater than 40 meters
C are far more dangerous on the coast than in the open ocean
D are often identified by ships on the ocean
55 As used in the passage, water that is “shallow” isn’t
56 A main difference between tsunamis in Japan and in Hawaii is that tsunami in Japan are more likely to
A arrive without warning B be less of a problem
C come from greater distances D originate in Alaska
57 The possessive ‘their” in the third paragraph refers to
58 A “calamitous” tsunami in the last paragraph is one that is
A expected B at fault C extremely calm D disastrous
59 From the expression “on record” in the last paragraph, it can be inferred that the tsunami that
accompanied the Krakatoa volcano
A occurred before efficient records were kept
B was not as strong as the tsunami in Lisbon
C was filmed as it was happening
D might not be the greatest tsunami ever
60 The passage suggests that the tsunami resulting from the Krakatoa volcano
A caused volcanic explosions in the English Channel
B was far more destructive close to the source than far away
C was unobserved outside of the Indonesian islands
D resulted in little damage

Because conducting censuses requires detailed planning, the organization conducting a census decides
on and narrows the topics to be addressed and, more specifically, determine how to word the questions,
tabulate the responses, and report the findings Assimilating, compiling, and statistically analyzing the information is a work-intensive process that may sometimes take up to a year Censuses examine such issues as population size and density, employment and industrial affiliation, migration, formal education, income received, housing, marital status, relationship of each individual to the head of the family and age
A detailed series of queries sample the data associated with the quality of housing, transportation, the
level of industrial production, water and electricity consumption or the functioning of the local government Major censuses taken by the federal government are conducted every 10 years, in the years
that end in zero Surveys of agriculture take place every 5 years and cover the years ending in 4 and 9,
manufacturing censuses in the years that end in 3 and 8, governmental units in the years ending in 2 and 7, and drainage and irrigation systems in the years ending in 9
To ensure that the census information is complete, the organization conducting the census attempts to
contact every individual residing or employed in a particular geographic area To be consistent,
information is gathered at approximately the same time Because it is practically impossible to reach every person on the same day, censuses question the individual about conditions as they were on a certain date Following the data gathering, the information is analyzed to determine the extent of social and economic change and problems, as well as the resources available to deal with them During the years between censuses, the Census Bureau engages in monthly interviews and queries from a sample population to up -

Is your company a sitting duck for hackers? When did you last change your password? How
complete are your security systems? Have you ever been broken into before?
According to IANS, the International Association for Network Security, there's a new breed of hackers
out there And there's also a new target In the past, hackers gained notoriety from breaking into big companies' networks In fact, the bigger the company, the bigger the success When hackers broke into
Informix's notoriously secure system 1999, they made headline news around the world
The big "success" came with a major drawback This headline break-ins came with international teams
of investigators and serious criminal charges Several former famous hackers are now sitting behind bars
or working overtime to pay off hefty fines in penalties and damages
So, hackers of the new decade have turned to a new target: smaller companies Smaller companies often spend less on their security systems If they have never been broken into before, they may be lulled into a feeling of security They are often lax about changing their password frequently enough And that spells trouble
Also, a breach system in a smaller company may attract little public attention Investigations may be
brief and superficial, as overloaded investigators pursue bigger problems
But if you do fall victim to hackers, it will definitely attract your own attention These thieves can gain access to your files, destroying, copying, or altering them They can create havoc with your data And if they do, you'll surely wish you had changed your password once more often
Question 71: The phrase "sitting duck for hackers" at the beginning of the passage most probably

These stories of killer bees in the news in recent years have attracted a lot of attentions as the bees have made their way from South America to North America Killer bees are reputed to be extremely
aggressive in nature, although experts say that their aggression may have been somewhat inflated
The killer bee is a hybrid – or combination – of the very mild European strain of honeybee and the
considerably more aggressive African bee, which was created when the African strain was imported into Brazil in 1955 The African bees were brought into Brazil because their aggression was considered an advantage: they were far more productive than their European counterparts in that they spent a higher percentage of their time working and continued working longer in inclement weather than did the European bees
These killer bees have been known to attack humans and animals, and some fatalities have occurred Experts point out, however, that the mixed breed known as the killer bee is actually not at all
aggressive as the pure African bee They also point out that the attacks have a chemical cause A killer bee
stings and flies away, it leaves its stinger embedded in the victim In the vicera attached to the embedded stinger is the chemical isoamyl acetate, which has an odor that attracts other bees As other bees approach the victim of the original sting, the victim tends to panic, thu s disturbing other bees and causing them to sting The new stings create more of the chemical isoamyl acetate, which attracts more bees and increases the panic level of the victim Killer bees tend to travel in large clusters and swarms and thus respond in large numbers to the production of isoamyl acetate
