Directions  Aim: to practice listening comprehension, past tense and past continuous tense  Play the recording of each part once without the script and have students listen  Play recording once or twice more with the script up  Have students answer the comprehension questions after each part  For dramatic effect, make commentaries about what the characters have said  To finish, students make up a story of who could actually have been the thief and write a paragraph saying who actually did it and why they think it is possible based of facts that came up in the interviews Who’s the thief? Yesterday night somebody broke into our neighbor’s house He stole everything he found They saw him while he was running away but they couldn’t catch him This morning the police came and asked some questions: Part Officer 1: What were you doing when the thief broke into the house? Mr White: I was watching a movie with my wife Then went to the kitchen to prepare the tea… Officer 1: How many minutes did you spend in the Mr White: I think 10 or 15 minutes… I’m not sure… Officer 1: Did you only prepare the tea? Mr White: Yes Officer 1: OK Thanks I kitchen? Part Questions  What was Mr White doing with his wife?  He was watching a movie  How long was Mr White in the kitchen and what was he doing?  He was preparing tea for 10 or 15 minutes Part Officer 2: What were you doing when your husband was in the kitchen? Mrs White: While I was watching the movie I was drinking my coffee Officer 2: Coffee? But your husband was preparing tea Mrs White: Tea? No… We didn’t drink tea last night Officer 2: OK What was he doing in the kitchen? Mrs White: He was thirsty He wanted to drink water Officer 2: Hmm What happened then? Mrs White: A friend of his called him and he went out to help Officer 2: So you were alone at home, weren’t you? Mrs White: Yes, I was I called him immediately but he didn’t answer Part Questions  Was Mrs White drinking tea?  No, Mrs White was drinking coffee  What happened when Mr White was drinking water?  He was drinking water when someone called Part Officer 1: So, what you think about the wife? Officer 2: Her story seems true Officer 1: Hmm I don’t know about her husband Officer 2: Do you think he did it? Officer 1: Maybe I want to ask him more questions Officer 2: I’ll get him and bring him to the station Part Questions  Did Officer think the wife was telling the truth?  Yes, he thought she was telling the truth  Did Officer think Mr White was telling the truth?  No, he thought Mr White was lying Part Officer 1: You weren’t at home when the thief broke into your house Where were you? We need to speak to her!
