Exercise 1 Choose the word or phrase that best fits the blank space in the following passage

Hidden in almost every European country, there are ancient and untouched forests These forests are often (31.) in wildlife and are home to many endangered species One example is a small patch of Scottish forest which (32.) a variety of coniferous trees suitable for a wide range of birds and insects Although many of the ancient (33.) of Europe worshipped trees, there is little respect for them today The World Wildlife Fund has decided to (34.) attention to the importance of Europe ancient woodlands They are asking for the remaining forests to be protected by controlling the trade in wood In addition, governments are being asked to regenerate forests where (35.) , and manage them in a more nature-friendly way.

Exercise 2 Fill one suitable word in each blank to complete the following passage

Most people picture sharks (31.) as huge, powerful, frightening predators, ready at any moment to (32.) use their sharp teeth to attack unwary swimmers without provocation There are numerous fallacies, however, in this conception of sharks.

First, there are about 350 species of sharks, and not all of them are large They range in size (33.) from the dwarf shark, which can be only

6 inches (0.5 feet) long and can be held in the palm of the hand, to the whale shark, which can be more than 55 feet long.

A second fallacy concerns the number and type of teeth, which can vary tremendously (34.) among the different species of shark A shark can have from one to seven sets of teeth at the same time, and some types of shark can have several hundred teeth in each jaw It is true that the fierce and predatory species do possess extremely sharp and brutal teeth used to rip the prey apart; many (35.) other types of shark, however, have teeth more adapted to grabbing and holding (36.) than to cutting and slashing.

Finally, not all sharks are predatory animals ready to strike out at humans, on the least whim In fact, only 12 of the 350 species of shark have been (37.) known to attack humans, and a shark needs to be provoked in order to attack The types of shark (38 which/that have the worst record with humans are the tiger shark, the bull shark, and the great white shark (39.) However , for most species of shark, even some of the largest types, there are no known instances of attacks (40.) on humans

Forty – five – minute test – No 5

Danny Mellor visits an island where most of the occupants are meat-eating monsters – and he learns that you should take them seriously, very seriously….

When I heard that there was an island where the local inhabitants are almost all dragons, I didn’t believe it But it’s true Komodo dragons live on four islands in Indonesia, including the island of Komodo It isn’t easy to get there You have to go to an island called Sumbawa and then take a seven-hour boat ride.

The Komodo dragon is the world’s largest lizard They’re big (they can be more than 12 feet long) and they’re ugly! Komodo dragons are carnivorous, eating insects, birds, deer, horses, and even young Komodo dragons The young can sometimes escape by climbing trees, because the heavier adults can’t climb very well Komodo dragons are good swimmers, however, and often hunt in the surf for fish and birds Komodo dragons are such deadly predators that even one bite can be lethal The bacteria in the dragon’s saliva is so dangerous that wounds don’t usually heal If a victim gets away, it often dies from infection within days Their reputation as human killers is well deserved, too They are responsible for attacking and killing both locals and tourists.

But there are fewer than 6.000 Komodo dragons, so you won’t find them easily They don’t like coming out when they hear people In fact, you can’t even look for them without an experienced guide If a dragon runs towards you, the guide quickly puts a stick across its neck For some reason, with a stick holding its head on the ground, a Komodo dragon lives very quiet and still But without it, look out! You might be lunch!
