Sample Sample I come from ABC My parents have been living here for the past thirty years or so I grew up here and I attended a well-known school called School number 163 We live in a respectable area with many shops, restaurants, and a variety of other businesses The people in our building are generally friendly and quite, which makes it a pleasure to live there http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 10 40 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES free and easy with their money and don’t plan or save anything, it’s likely that their children will have a similar attitude unless somebody else shows them a different approach I suppose sometimes children may learn about managing money at school, but I don’t think all schools teach it as a skill Or maybe they will be a part of a promotional activity by a financial institution and learn some good habits as part of it Of course, once you’re working and earning money, there’s a lot of financial advice and tips available As soon as you open a bank account you normally get bombarded by financial advice, savings plans and other financial products from the bank you choose Generally, yes they think it’s important to save something each week or month They try to encourage their children to save for their future They might explain about buying a car or house when they’re older and the fact that they’ll probably need some savings for a deposit to be able to get a mortgage or bank loan Children probably don’t think it’s very important when they’re young, but once they’re working they can usually understand that it makes good sense Many of them positively encourage their children to start a savings plan when they are young That way, if relatives or the parents give them extra money for special occasions they can spend some of it and save the rest for sometime in the future Most banks have special children/young people savings accounts, and of course most children understand the simple concept of a piggy bank – it’s how my grandmother taught me to save Usually many different things, but I suppose the most popular would be clothes, music, electronic gadgets and I guess girls spend more on makeup and stuff like that Depending on how old they are, they might spend a lot of money socializing or going out, or maybe they have a specific hobby, a favorite sport or something similar which they spend their money on Of course, as well as spending their money on things they like and want, they probably have to spend some of their money on transport and food and other basic necessities of life each month Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about tourism, tourists and travel industry Do you think the tourist industry is a good industry to work in for young people in your country? Should there be any restrictions on the travel business? http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 40 41 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES Should there be any restrictions on the tourism industry? Should there be any restrictions on business travel? Sample Sample 1.It depends, there are many different types of work in tourism Some jobs are temporary, part-time or seasonal while others can be professional careers related to hotel and restaurant management, or even self-employment Tourism seems to be a booming industry in many countries so it can provide many opportunities for young people, either short-term or long-term depending on what they are specifically looking for I think if a young person is serious about building a career within the tourism industry, it can provide good opportunities as more and more people are travelling nowadays and visiting places outside their own countries so the future of tourism in general looks to be a healthy one in terms of employment prospects I’m not sure what kinds of restrictions you are referring to, but obviously eco-tourism has become a hot topic because it ensures that the environment isn’t damaged by tourism Any restrictions, such as those necessary to protect the natural environment and wildlife from the impact of many tourists in an area, are a good idea and should be encouraged If we consider the impact of travel and accommodating a large number of people visiting a particular area for tourism purposes, then yes, there probably should be some form of restriction When a certain location becomes extremely popular with tourists it can change the local culture and impact life for the native inhabitants It can affect prices, transport and congestion There’s also the question of construction of new hotels and other tourist accommodation which can impact on the local landscape This should be controlled so that the development of tourism in an area is carried out in a positive way with no negative consequences for the local people I think it would be difficult to justify restricting business travel After all, if it wasn’t necessary, most companies wouldn’t it Corporations are always looking to cut their costs, so unnecessary business travel would probably be one of the first things they would target Apart from that, business travel also means supporting a whole range of commercial activities as part of the process; hotels, restaurants, car hire, taxis and other service providers all benefit from business travellers http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 41 42 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about credit cards Are credit cards used very much in your country? Which is better for saving money, using a credit card or using cash? What changes have resulted from the use of credit cards? Sample Sample 1.Yes, they’re common now; most people who are working have at least one or two of them People mainly use them in stores to pay for goods and for online shopping, but that’s not as popular here as in some other countries It’s probably better to use a credit card than cash, but only if you pay the outstanding balance each month and don’t incur any interest on what you spend It used to be that many stores preferred cash and would offer ‘cash discounts’ but now that’s not normal anymore By using a credit card you can find better prices by shopping online sometimes, so if you’re a smart shopper you can actually save money Many credit cards also have rewards schemes where they give you points for spending money You can cash in or redeem these points for special offers; that’s another way you can save money Some credit card companies also advertise special promotional offers with stores or companies they have alliances with… yet another way to save money by using a credit card The important thing is to avoid paying interest on what you buy with a credit card, because if you have to pay interest, then it will probably be more expensive in the long run than simply paying in cash In general, it has made shopping and buying things easier than it was in the past It’s also made it possible to buy things when you haven’t actually got the money Many people spend more than they should because it’s so easy when you have a credit card You can’t that when you only use cash You can only spend the cash you physically have Credit cards are also one of the key components of online shopping, which would be almost impossible to without one So all in all, credit cards have transformed the way people shop, buy things and spend their money Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about saving money Do you think it’s easy for (young) people to save money? http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 42 43 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES Do young people nowadays believe in saving money? In your opinion, why many people derive pleasure from spending money? What young people in your country save money for? Who you think places more importance on saving money, men or women? Why some people find it hard to save? Which you think is better for the economy of a country or area, people saving money or people spending money? Sample Sample 1 A lot depends on their circumstances; I mean if they aren’t working and only receive money from their parents then it could be quite difficult for them to save money On the other hand, if a young person has a part-time job, they might find it quite easy to save some money each week or each month It also depends on their outlook, whether they plan for the future or see everything in the short term There are a lot of things young people can spend their money on, but saving money is also important to help purchase larger items or things in the future Parents can also have a great influence over if their children develop a habit of saving money regularly or not Once a person has the habit, it’s quite easy to do, even if it’s only saving a little money regularly rather than spending it all In general, there is a lot of pressure for people, not just young people, to spend all they have or earn and then some more That’s why credit cards are so popular and easy payment terms in stores Many companies want you to buy their products now, not six months in the future when you have saved up enough money Some young people have seen the problems which people experienced because of the financial recession in recent years, when many people had borrowed more than they really should have and then found themselves in an impossible situation trying to pay back too much debt I think many young people now are a lot wiser about how easy it is to take on too much credit and not save any money for emergencies or unforeseen circumstances I think most people believe that saving money is a good idea, but actually developing the discipline to it over a long period of time is what most people find difficult to It makes us feel good when we can buy things, or maybe spend money on our friends When we buy something new, clothes or gadgets or whatever, we usually feel happy with http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 43 44 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES what we’ve bought for a short time It’s a bit like eating your favorite food or something like that You feel good for a while, but then later you want to buy something else because that happy feeling has disappeared Some of them save for going to college, buying a car or maybe going traveling when they graduate from school My sister has started saving to buy an apartment, she’s been doing it for years now and hopefully next year she’ll have enough to think about buying one I’m saving for two things; for when I go to college and also for a vacation when I graduate I plan to travel with some of my friends for six months so we’re all saving as much as we can at the moment I’m not sure I have friends who save money and friends who just spend all their money I don’t think there are more men than women who save… or the other way round Maybe women are more impulsive when it comes to shopping and spending money But, for example, my girlfriends and I often spend money on clothes but my brother always seems to be buying gadgets and computer stuff He might save money for a few months and then spend it all, but I save some of money every month and never spend it… so we have different habits It’s difficult to say if men or women think saving money is more important Well, first, you need to have some extra money It’s almost impossible to save anything if you need to spend everything you have just to cover the cost of living So to be able to save, you need to have a little extra, more than you need for the necessities of life Then you have to be disciplined and get into the habit of putting some money away each week or month, either in a savings account in the bank or even just keeping it safe at home The other difficulty is that we are constantly tempted to spend money on things we see in the stores or on television… so learning to control your buying impulses is important too Some people just can’t resist buying everything they see and want and so end up with no savings But if you get into the habit of regular saving, then it becomes a habit for life… something my grandmother taught me I suppose it’s a good thing for the local economy if people are spending their money It means that, they are buying things and that in turn means that people in stores and service companies have work The whole manufacturing and supply chain depends on consumers consuming When people save their money, and don’t spend it, then only the banks win really In an ideal economy, people would have enough money to spend on http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 44 45 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES buying products and services and also save money That would be the best scenario It’s important for people to both activities Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about Friends on Facebook What you think about making friends on Facebook? Does a list of 500 friends make sense to you? Does Facebook change the meaning of friendship? What is a true friendship in your opinion? Sample Sample 1.It’s fun! It’s normal nowadays to have a lot of friends on Facebook and other social media It’s more interesting than just having friends where you live But it’s different, obviously, because you don’t see them or go places with them, but it’s still fun 2.Well, the term ‘friend’ is just a name given by Facebook, obviously not everybody who likes your page or comments on something you said is a friend in the traditional sense of the word I suppose if you thought about all the people you ever had contat with in your life, from school, college, work and other social activities, if you kept a note of their name then you would have more than 500 by now … so I don’t think it’s that strange that people have thousands of ‘friends’ on Facebook or Twitter Maybe it would be more accurate to call them contacts, but it doesn’t really matter 3.No, not really I still hang out with my friends and we go out at the weekends and stuff together Friends on Facebook are different … in the past some people used to write letters to people in other countries … like penpals … I guess you could think of facebook as smething similar but it’s obviously much more advanced and you can much more than just write to people It’s having a relationship with another person and you have something in common Maybe you went to the same school or you’re interested in the same things You share time and experiences together and that makes for a bond Long term friendship usually means there is also trust and confidence between the two people and they are willing to help each other if necessary But I suppose that everyone has their own definition of friendship and what it means to them http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 45 46 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about visitors / hospitality How often you have friends visiting you at home? Do you ever allow your home to be used by other people? (e.g., someone who has no place to stay) How would you react if a guest rejected (or, ignored / or, did not return) your hospitality? How you think a visitor to someone’s home should behave? If a guest is staying at your house, you think they should adapt to your family (or the people who live permanently there)? Sample Sample 1 It’s probably around once a week for my friends, but my parents have their friends visiting nearly all the time, or so it seems Well, it’s my parents’ home, but I remember an occasion last year when an uncle of mine stayed for about months with us My uncle and his family live in another city quite far from where we live, but he had just managed to get a new job in the city where we live It was a good opportunity for him so he decided to take it and move here My mother and father offered him a room in our home so that he didn’t have to rent an apartment or stay in a hotel That was last year; now my uncle and his family have their own house here and visit us quite often I suppose I would be a little disappointed if I really wanted to help the person And if, for example, my uncle didn’t want me to stay at his home for a while, after he stayed with us, then I would be very hurt, and my parents too I think hospitality is a two-way street My parents wouldn’t offer the opportunity to stay in their home to just anyone though, it would only be for family or very close friends It’s less likely to cause problems if it’s between people who know each other well Visitors should try not to offend or inconvenience their host It’s important to remember that if you’re a visitor in someone’s home they probably have different ways of doing things than you at home so it’s a good idea to ask about anything you’re unsure about so you don’t cause any problems Yes, it seems the natural thing to It’s nice if they can observe the habits of the family they’re staying with and try to blend in with them It’s always considerate to avoid http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 46 47 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES doing anything that would cause friction such as smoking inside the house if the family doesn’t it or watching TV very late at night if the family usually goes to bed early That sort of thing can cause big problems very quickly You should respect the differences and try to cause as little inconvenience as possible to them Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about Mobile phones Do you like having a mobile phone? Is it a good or a bad thing to have a mobile phone? Why? What can you with a mobile phone? Do old and young people use mobile phones in the same way? What can be done to avoid children becoming inattentive in class? Sample Yes As far as you know, it’s extremely convenient, and essential, nowadays It would be difficult to survive in today’s world without one It’s just so useful for everything I don’t think it’s a case of whether it’s good or bad – it’s part of life for people now – that’s how we communicate and business Moreover, people search for information and shop online using their mobiles, they banking and communicate for work and many other things also In general, it’s a really important thing, just like having a car, it would be difficult to many things without it Well, like I said before, you can search for information on the internet, thus you can pay bills and banking, you can shop and buy things online and obviously you can email, text and call people you know Many phones allow you to listen to music, watch videos, navigate and use other apps depending on what you’re interested in I have about 50 different apps loaded on my phone so I can video chat, learn English, translate, and other activities Generally, no, I think older people tend to still call someone when they want to talk Younger people prefer to send texts I’m not sure if older people use as many apps or functions of their mobile phones as young people do, or take as many pictures I am sure that, older people still see a mobile phone as basicaly a way to communicate with another person Younger people use it as part of living, as an everyday tool to enable them to things http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 47 48 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES Because of mobile phones? The school should have a policy for mobile phones in the classroom Students shouldn’t be permitted to have their phones on when they are in lessons, but be allowed to use them between classes and in breaktime Or at least schools should require that mobile phones are muted while students are in class so nobody gets distracted by them ringinig Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about camera Is it really necessary to have a camera in your mobile phone? Why? Is it a better idea to have a camera separately? Why? Is it better to look at your photos on screen or in albums in your view? Is it really necessary to have professional photographers in the media? Why? Do you think that some pictures in the media are taken by amateurs? Sample Yes, certainly, I think it is nowadays There are so many apps and platforms where you can video chat with your friends and it’s also really useful, for example, if you have an accident in your car you can take photos of the scene to show what happened Because so many people are using their smartphones to access the internet, having a camera as part of your phone makes sense No, I don’t think so, unless you are a serious photographer It’s just something else to carry around with you, and you can lose it or leave it somewhere if you’re not careful It’s much more convenient to have a camera in your phone If you photography as a hobby then it makes sense to have a professional camera because the quality is better and you can more things with it… but if you just want to take photos of your friends and things that happen, then a camera phone is normally good enough I think it’s almost the same, if you want to show your friends who are with you in some photos, you have to pass them the album or pass them your phone so they can see the photos Moreover, the big advantage of a camera phone is you can post your photos to your Facebook and Twitter accounts and share them with everybody easily… thus, they don’t need to be beside you to see your photo Yes, because not everyone is very good at taking photos As you probably know, photography is a skill and so a professional photographer will always be able to take better or more interesting pictures than an amateur http://123doc.org/trang-ca-nhan-244061-troublemaker.htm 48 49 IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLES And professional photographers get paid to take photos of many different things, not just their friends, family or places they visit They sometimes have to travel and research the things they photograph so that’s why they get paid It’s possible, I suppose, if a person just happens to be in a certain location when something happens then they may be the only person who takes a photo of the event so the picture appears in the media We’ve seen examples of that when natural diasters happen or even when a particular celebrity appears someplace and someone who is not paparazzi or a professional photographer happens to take a photo or make a short video of whatever or whoever it was Ielts speaking part Topic: Discussions questions about your hometown Can you tell me about your hometown ?
