Trang 3Why Are So Many Animals on the Verge of Extinction?
How can elephants just (1) ? Well, because humans are killing them to supply illegal ivory to markets throughout the world As many as 50,000 elephants (2) killed annually
Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth If anyone’s killing anyone, it makes way more sense for elephants to be (3) humans, because humans aren’t as big as elephants But they don’t kill humans, because they are kind and (4) their own business
Elephants are some of the most loving, family-oriented, emotional and intelligent animals on our planet The females (5) together for their entire lives, while the males leave the family at puberty and live in
a bachelor herd until they are ready to be (6) their own (typical) If one is sad, they will console each other with their trunks They trunk hug each other! If they come across a (7) elephant, or even just the bones of an elephant, they dig a grave and stay there for days mourning the loss (if they come across a human who has died, it’s been reported that they show the same respect) They never forget another elephant,
or even a human who has made a (an) (8) on them
Elephants can live up to 80 years, but their lives are being cut drastically short because humans want their tusks (9) , they aren’t the only animals on the endangered species list due to poachers Rhinos, leopards, tigers, lions, bluefin tuna, salamanders and sharks are all being threatened by poaching
Poaching isn’t the only man-made cause of extinction, however The global climate change is continuing
to threaten the world’s animals Another major problem is the CO2 increase The more CO2 humans put into the atmosphere, the more acidic the oceans become, killing marine life and threatening so many (10)

Part 2: Read the passage below and choose the best answer for each question (1,0pt)
SMART ENERGY
The next few decades will see great changes in the way energy is supplied and used In some major oil producing nations, “peak oil” has already been reached, and there are increasing fears of global warming Consequently, many countries are focusing on the switch to a low carbon economy This transition will lead to
major changes in the supply and use of electricity [A] Firstly, there will be an increase in overall demand, as consumers switch from oil and gas to electricity to power their homes and vehicles [B] Secondly, there will be
an increase in power generation, not only in terms of how much is generated, but also how it is generated, as to
provide the electricity industry with there is growing electricity generation from renewable sources [C] To
Trang 4meet these challenges, countries are investing in Smart Grid technology [D] This system aims a better
understanding of power generation and demand, and to use this information to create a more efficient power network
Smart Grid technology basically involves the application of a computer system to the electricity network The computer system can be used to collect information about supply and demand and improve engineer's ability to manage the system With better information about electricity demand, the network will be able to increase the amount of electricity delivered per unit generated, leading to potential reductions in fuel needs and carbon emissions Moreover, the computer system will assist in reducing operational and maintenance costs Smart Grid technology offers benefits to the consumer too They will be able to collect real-time
information on their energy use for each appliance Varying tariffs throughout the day will give customers the incentive to use appliances at times when supply greatly exceeds demand, leading to great reductions in bills For example, they may use their washing machines at night Smart meters can also be connected to the internet
or telephone system, allowing customers to switch appliances on or off remotely Furthermore, if houses are fitted with the apparatus to generate their own power, appliances can be set to run directly from the on-site power source, and any excess can be sold to the grid
With these changes comes a range of challenges The first involves managing the supply and demand Sources of renewable energy, such as wind, wave and solar, are notoriously unpredictable, and nuclear power, which is also set to increase as nations switch to alternative energy sources, is inflexible With oil and gas, it is relatively simple to increase the supply of energy to match the increasing demand during peak times of the day
or year With alternative sources, this is far more difficult, and may lead to blackouts or system collapse Potential solutions include investigating new and efficient ways to store energy and encouraging consumers to use electricity at off-peak times
A second problem is the fact that many renewable power generation sources are located in remote areas,
such as windy uplands and coastal regions, where there is currently a lack of electrical infrastructure New infrastructures therefore must be built Thankfully, with improved smart technology, this can be done more efficiently by reducing the reinforcement or construction costs
Although Smart Technology is still in its infancy, pilot schemes to promote and test it are already
underway Consumers are currently testing the new smart meters which can be used in their homes to manage
electricity use There are also a number of demonstrations being planned to show how the smart technology could practically work, and trials are in place to test the new electrical infrastructure It is likely that technology will be added in “layers”, starting with “quick win” methods which will provide initial carbon savings, to be followed by more advanced systems at a later date Cities are prime candidates for investment into smart energy, due to the high population density and high energy use It is here where Smart Technology is likely to
be promoted first, utilising a range of sustainable power sources, transport solutions and an infrastructure for charging electrically powered vehicles The infrastructure is already changing fast By the year 2050, changes
in the energy supply will have transformed our homes, our roads and our behaviour

A It can reduce their electricity bills
B It can tell them how much energy each appliance is using
C It can allow them to turn appliances on and off when they are not at home

4 According to paragraph 4, what is the problem with using renewable sources of power?
A They do not provide much energy
B They often cause system failure and blackouts
C They do not supply a continuous flow of energy
D They can’t be used at off-peak times
5 In paragraph 6, what can be inferred about cities in the future?

………… television first emerged (4) ………… a possible rival to the cinema (5) ………… an industrial scale This was particularly true in the United States, (6) ………… a crossover between radio and cinema interests began in the 1920s, extending to television with the start of commercial broadcasting in 1939 In European countries, where broadcasting was in the hands of state monopolies, they remained separate for longer, (7)
………… since the 1950s, there has been a growing convergence at all levels By the 1980s, with the advent of large screen television on the one (8) ………… and home video on the other, all the distinctions had come blurred
Before television, in the United States, broadcasting developed as a system of privately owned,
commercial stations, tied together by two great networks and ineffectively regulated by the federal government The Holywood Studios were the (9) ………… to propose an alternative programming structure which would have supported broadcasting from box-office profits Paramount and MGM attempted to initiate (10) ………… own film based radio networks in the late 1920s, using film talent under contract to provide entertainment with publicity value in promoting films (11) …………, a combination of exhibitors’ objections, together (12)

Part 2: Read the following extract and use your own words to summarize it (in about 100 words) You MUST NOT copy or re-write the original (0,5pt) Most people drink orange juice and eat oranges because they are said to be rich in vitamin C There are also other foods that are rich in vitamin C It is found in citrus fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, and carrots Vitamin C is important to our health Do you really know how essential this nutrient is to our health and well-being? Our body needs to heal itself Vitamin C can repair and prevent damage to the cells in our body and heal wounds It also keeps our teeth and gums healthy That is not all It protects our body from infections such as colds and flu and also helps us to get better faster when we have these infections That is why a lot of people drink orange juice and take vitamin C tablets every day This wonderful vitamin is also good for our heart It protects the linings of the arteries, which are the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood In other words, it offers protection against heart disease If we do not get enough vitamin C, which means we are not eating enough food that contains this vitamin, it can lead to serious diseases Lack of vitamin C can lead to scurvy, which causes swollen gums, cheeks, fingers, hands, toes, and feet In serious conditions, it can lead to bleeding from wounds, loss of teeth, and opening up of wounds Therefore, make sure you have enough vitamin C in your diet ………
