Utilization of Plastic and Biomass Waste Mixtures as the Potential Source of Syngas Production from In-Situ Catalytic Gasification Process Bridgid Chin Lai Fui1, Suzana Yusup1, Murni Melati Ahmad1, and Ahmed Al Shoaibi2 Biomass Processing Lab, Green Technology MOR, Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Bandar Seri Iskandar, Tronoh 31750, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia Department of Chemical Engineering, The Petroleum Institute, P.O Box 2533, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates *Corresponding author Name of corresponding author: AP Dr Suzana Yusup E-mail address: drsuzana_yusuf@petronas.com.my Phone number: +605-3688-208 Abstract The management of municipal solid waste (MSW) continues to be one of the most common issues faced globally The world economic development and population growth are the main contributing factors linked to the prompt increasing of MSW generated yearly Owing to progressive increasing of waste generation, the growing consumption of plastic waste has also become one of the major constituents of MSW Plastic are derived from non-renewable materials such as petroleum, therefore there is need to find an integrated approach to convert the plastic waste to energy source in the replacement of the predominantly dependency on the conventional methods, such as landfill and incineration This is highly required initiating to reduce or eliminate secondary pollution, and land scarcity This paper reviews the production of the MSW and plastic waste, and the potential of co-gasification of plastic and biomass waste mixtures in producing alternative energy source In addition, this paper also highlights the on-going research of co-gasification of polyethylene and biomass research conducted in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia for syngas production Key Words Municipal Solid Waste, Plastic Wastes, Biomass, Renewable Energy, Co-Gasification
