We stood in Syntagma about nine o'clock in the heat of an August evening preparing to start the business of going round the small hotels to look for a room We had a map and I knew the alphabet from my schooldays and from various problems in algebra and geometry, which use many of the letters , especially the one that helps you with the area of circles.
In the bus , as Europe passed the windows of the great six -wheeler and on the ferry I 'd tried to learn the numbers and a few of the most useful phrases At least we would be able to understand the price of things and exchange the normal polite greetings We would realize later how much English was spoken , particularly in matters of buying and selling.
With pages photocopied from a "Rough Guide to Athens" we set off Soon it was obvious Athens was full
of English speakers using the " Rough Guide ".At one reception desk after another people were "Sorry but perhaps tomorrow ".Finally we got to the bottom of yet another long street running down from Syntagma and went through the doorway of yet another hotel to begin our ritual "Eh- heh- teh thomah-te- oh? "Have you a room ? "
A large man sat behind a desk It was after eleven o'clock at night and we waited for the now familiar apology and suggestion that we come back tomorrow "Well now ",he said in faultness English, " If you don't mind waiting till the staff clean and prepare it , there 'll be a room ready in about an hour "After resting our tired legs and feet in the hotel 's small bar, the large man appeared, picked up our bags and led us to a lift.
" It 's on the top floor , " he said : " On the roof " He saw our look "Don't worry, it 's very comfortable.
"We ascended, stepped out , followed him up a flight of stairs and through a doorway into the open The night sky was all around us full of very bright stars He stopped at a door , opened it and put our bags on the floor We followed him It was to be our home for the next three weeks He handed us the key
Trang 5" Come outside I 'd like you to see something", he said and walked to the end of the roof " Just look round there " We leaned out over the parapet just enough to be safe and put our heads round the corner of the building In the distance on the top of its hill, fully lit and clearly outlined against the night sky, was the Acropolis Later, one memorable night, we would walk round it by moonlight, but I don't think anything could ever equal the magic of first seeing it the way we did, just a little before midnight from the top of a Athens roof

Students learning English as a second language are sometimes given a word by their teacher
and asked to give an/a _1 (explain) as to what that word means; in other words, to provide
a 2 (define) The 3 (assume) is that if you know a word, you can define it 4
(logic), that might make sense, but in reality it is not always 5 (reason) to assume that.
There are words and phrases that even native speakers use in conversation without much 6
(think) which can lead to 7 (confuse) when you ask a native speaker to define them Take
the 8 (conceive) of ‘zeitgeist’, for example, which has entered English from German It’s
9 (doubt) much easier to use than it is to define With a word like ‘zeitgeist’ it may be
more 10 (sense) to test the student’s understanding in ways other than asking them to
define it.

Trang 17Tens of thousands of ancient pictures carved into the rocks at
one of France’s most important tourist sites are being
gradually destroyed Scientists and researchers fear that the
36.000 drawings on rocks in Mont Bego in the French Alps
are being damaged so rapidly that they will not survive for
future generations.
The mountain, believed to have once been a site for prayer
and worship, is scattered with 4,000 year-old drawings cut
into bare rock They include pictures of cows with horns,
cultivated fields and various gods and goddesses But as the
popularity of the site increases, the pictures are being ruined
by thoughtless graffiti.
Jean Clottes is the chairman of the International Committee
on Rock Art He says, “People think that because the picture
have been there so long they will always continue to be
there But if the damage continues as this rate there will be
nothing left in 50 years.”
He describes seeing tourists stamping on the drawings,
wearing away the rock and definition of the artwork as they
do so Some visitors, he says, even chop off parts to take
home as souvenirs
“When people think they can’t take a good enough
photograph, they rub the drawings to get a clearer picture,”
he said “The drawings are polished by the weather, and if
the sun is shining and the visitors can’t see them properly
they simply rub and scrape them to make them look
fresher.”
Other researchers describe hoe people arrive carrying long
sticks with sharp ends to scratch their own drawings, or even
their names, in the rock.
But experts are divided over the best way to preserve the
drawings Henry de Lumley, director of the Museum of
Natural History in Paris, believes that the only way to save
the site is to turn the whole mountain into a “no-go” area,
preventing the public from going there except on guided tours Otherwise, he says, not only will the site
be completely destroyed but important research work will be reduced.
Clottes disagrees “The measure proposed by Henry
de Lumley is the most severe, and while it is the most effective, it is also certain to bring about protests from people who live there,” he said “The site was classified as a historic monument years ago by the Ministry of Culture, and we must do as much as possible to save what is there.”
David Lavergne, the regional architect, also wants to avoid closing the site “Henry de Lumley’s idea isn’t ideal,” he said “Our department feels that the best solution is to let people look at the site, but because the area is very big it is difficult to prevent visitors from damaging it I would prefer that everyone was able to look at it, but the main problem is financial.
We don’t have the funds to employ the necessary number of guards We may have to consider charging
a fee There seems to be no prospect of government funding.”
In Nice, Annie Echassoux, who also worked on researching the site, is alarmed that as the mountain becomes easier to reach – tourists can now avoid the three-and-a-half-hour walk by hiring vehicles – the damage will increase rapidly She thinks that the only solution is to rope off the area and provide guides.
“You can’t say the plan can’t go ahead because there
is no money,” he said “That is not good enough Money must be provided because the Ministry of Culture has classified this area as a historic site If we don’t take steps, we will be responsible for losing the drawings for the next generation.”

QUESTION IV Reading (30 points)
A Read the text below and then answer the questions 1 - 8 (10 points)
The World and Its Global Economy
The world as man knows it today is getting smaller and smaller because of technology such as the Internetand high speed modems In fact, on March 3, 2005, a man flew entirely around the globe without refueling
or stopping in a one-person jet The world is changing the world, and as the 21st century continues, the
global economy will play a larger and larger role As Thomas Friedman so eloquently put it in Lexus and the Olive Tree, globalization is "the inexorable integration of markets, nation-states, and technologies to a
degree never witnessed before."
A With today's technology it is possible for people to solicit business from the far side of the globe B
A company like Dell Computers can order parts from several different countries, take shipment in NorthCarolina where the new computers will be assembled, and then ship them to all regions of the globe C
An American oil firm can do a satellite survey in Siberia for oil deposits and then contract with a Russianoil firm to drill the actual well, while the petroleum engineer, acting as the project supervisor, remains in
Trang 25the US and runs the project by using a computer, a high speed Internet connection, and a cellulartelephone for quick questions D
A global economy poses some serious problems If a company doesn't act fast enough, it can lose, and ifthe company loses heavily, what will happen to the employees working for the company, and then in turnwhat will happen to the stores that depend on those employees buying their goods? As can be seen, there
is a definite trickle-down effect How is the child who is about to graduate from high school supposed todecide on what career field to enter? A career field that is here today might be gone long before the childcan graduate from college, so not only does it become vital that a person gain the needed knowledge toenter a given career field, but the person also needs to learn how to learn Learning how to learn mayprove to be even more necessary than the knowledge needed to enter a given career field A person who
is good at learning how to learn can quickly adapt to changes in the global economy by quickly preparing
to enter other career fields if his job is here today, but gone in the morning
If the world turns into a global economy, a person will need to be able to get along and work with peoplefrom different cultural backgrounds However, unless a person has spent time living in different parts of theworld, this might be hard to do While many students from foreign countries, especially the Asian countries, come to the US to earn a graduate degree, how many students from the US spend even a semester abroadstudying in another country? The answer to this question is of course a very small percentage
While individuals from some of foreign countries and some individuals from the US and the US economywill adjust to globalization, will the rest of the world? Mass media are more than willing to continue tostir the pot of controversy as they not only have to learn how to report the positive news, but also dole out
a continuous stream of negative news When a person in a developing country sees all the cars on thestreets of Beijing, of course that person wants a car so he can show his neighbor how wealthy he is, andall this does is promote unneeded consumption Why does the person who has nowhere to go and nomoney to spend for travel want to own a car? The simple answer is because the media paint owning a car
as a symbol of wealth and it is human nature to want to become wealthy or at least to appear wealthy
On the positive side, as prices rise due to increased demands on scarce resources, there will be anincentive to find affordable alternatives For example, as the price of oil rises and along with it the price
of a gallon of gasoline, a point will be reached at which people are no longer willing to purchase gasoline
so they can drive their cars, and they will demand both alternative transportation methods and cars whichuse another source of energy A current online survey says $2.50 per gallon of gasoline is the point atwhich the people in the US will start making demands on the auto manufacturer, which will open up newcareer fields in a few countries that have the technology needed to meet the demands; however, peoplearound the globe will work together on it

advertising revenue
C The mass media will report half-truths if it will keep their ratings up so they can sell advertising
D The mass media report every angle of a story since reports are apolitical and never present
only one viewpoint
6 In paragraph 5, what can be inferred from the description of the media about owning a car?
A A car needs to be painted certain colors if it is going to show others a person is wealthy
B The media are so biased that they will provide paint if a person needs to paint his car so as to project the car as a symbol of wealth
C The media slant the stories, so it will appear to viewers that only wealthy people own a car
D The members of the media don't own cars, so they are jealous of those wealthy people who do own cars
