THINK OF SEAFARERS Life on the ship: -Have you ever worked and lived on the ship ? - If you have lifetime on the ship , what you think about that time? - If you haven’t had yet lifetime on the ship , it’s the same to me , can you tell me what you imagine about that , please ? - Can you imagine life without television , meeting anyone , information from internet , newspaper …? -Can you imagine life without your family , your beloved , etc? - If you want to become a seafarer , you will lose a lot thing and you must ready to prepare for a new life : - May be , the life on ship is seem terribly boring: You can’t go any where except around your vessel You can’t meet any one except crew Your job is repeat again everyday , sometime it’s dangerous and heavy You must spend most of time on the ship ,and you don’t know what is happening in the world , your hometown , and your family …until you ashore Sometime , you will fell lonely and really homesick and you want to go home , but you can’t You always opposite danger , for example , storm hurricane, accident, iceberg , collision and pirates , etc these make you stress and tired , etc, - Do you worry all of that ? I really scare But everything has got its interesting and the life is also impartial Although you can lose a lot of thing , but you will also receive a lot of thing : Do you like adventure ? if you like that , the seafarer really attractive because every journey is similar a adventure , you can’t guess what will happen ahead Do you like free travel? Your vessel can take you to many country which she load cargo in rest time , you can go ashore to visit anywhere you want , but remember to come back on time On ship , you will work and in professional environment because of property of your job , you will train careful for example, you can work as welder , painter, repairer , or sailor ….you have a chance to explore your ability The seafaring is required healthy , so on the ship , you always must exercise it makes you more stronger , more wellbuilt…to sum up, more manly ,more attractive All of crew are the same to you , so they always want to build a small family on your vessel they consider together brother You should open your heart , it ‘s easy and can makes you more happy , surely Entertainments on ship are not bad In your free time , you can go fishing , can watch some movies you like , listen to music, take photograph , see sunshine and sunset , send email , write a poem of novel , play cheese or gamble etc, anything if you want The food and drink is good and free But especial , you must not cook there is always a Cook on vessel Is it not bad ? ok Are you ready to begin a new life on ship? Knowledge of your job : - Can you tell me truly , the cause which you want to become a seafarer ? - Maybe , because of money or interest or other any reason but I’m sure that you must know what you must on the ship nobody costs a high salary for a bad seafarer and more terrible , nobody permit a man who know nothing on board so , from now , you must study and study - Do you think it’s very easy to become a seafarer ? if you have this thought , you are wrong You must have got ability , professional level , healthy etc to get all of them , you will learn so much that you can’t imagine : For example , you will learn or be trained : How to steer the vessel How to use the equipment on ship : radar , GPS , walkie-talkies , machine , fire extinguisher , fire horse , etc How to your work , such as , sailing , welding , painting ,… The way to sort out problems : accident on ship , collision, grounding , ship wreck … Foreign language It’s very important to learn English it’s the international language you always use it to trade and communicate.( This is the first standard to be chosen work on international ship) Maritime law of nation , regulation of IMO , and the Conventions… - But all of that above , not enough , you must always wide your knowledge it’s maybe easy to become a seafarer , but it’s very difficult to become a captain, experiences are required and the time for you grow up ,you must try - At sea , any your mistakes can go to terrible consequence so you are very careful and work responsibly your shipmate’s accident sometime result from your own carelessness ,remember: make safety your first priority 3.The danger at sea: - As I said above , every journey you can’t guess what will happen ahead may be that’s good things ( nice weather , see wheal and dolphin , ) but sometime , that’s bad things which can become danger for your ship and yourself - You will be trained to resist all of them so that you can survive and finish journey a Pirates: - This is the most dangerous for seafarers - Did you watch “pirates of the Caribbean” ? did you like captain Jack Sparrow and crew ? Their adventure is very exciting , did you think they are good men? Did they fight against evil? - But that’s only on film ,in fact , nowadays , pirates are bad men they use any gun and ready to attack any vessel if they can They use the launch to approach the ship and when they climb up the ship , they will shoot any one who fight against them - The most famous area about pirates are Somali’s sea and Malacca channel At there, there are many people so poor that they must become pirates , the way to earn money - So , they’re very rash Nowadays, pirates are organized in groups and equipped modern weapon ,therefore , they can also attack a very large vessel they incarcerate the ship and crew and claim ransom money if their purpose isn’t succeed , they ready to kill anyone in crew to threaten ship owner and authority Every year , hundreds of vessel are attack , but there are a few seafarers who are killed - Before , people only negotiate to rescue ship and crew , a suitable ransom money will be given , it’s a bargain But you don’t worry From now , a few government permit to use violence annihilate pirates ,such as French , American, Russian, … they delegate their warship and destroyer patrol regular on dangerous area to prevent pirates ,it’s a real war The international community try to keep safety on route at now and in future - Are you scare? What will you when your vessel is attacked by pirates ? I think the best way is hide and call the helpness Do you think so? b Storm and hurricane: - These are the reason which cause ship wreck , before Because the information means was behind But , nowadays, the development of artificial satellite system , radar system , GPS system …can help people predict the variety of weather ( rain, wind , storm , ) , therefore the best guide will be given to help the ship change route suitably - So , storm and hurricane are less dangerous than these were , but these are always threat for ship - You don’t also worry about that c Accident: grounding, collision , man overboard , fire on vessel , ice berg… - These are caused by your mistakes and your carelessness -When it happen , you must yourself solve that accident , sometime , you must find the way to survive When any one was injured , the only way is waiting the helicopter which take him to the hospital It’s very dangerous because “wait” mean “ nearer death” - So you must remember “ safety first” - Your carelessness and your subjective thinking may be kill yourself and crew, For example: ice berg :it’s very large and rigid ,it’s floated on water -When you see ice berg , you think it ‘s small and unharmful So you keep the ship straight But the part which you look at is only the top of ice berg below the water face , there is a giant ice, and certainly , accident will happen, ( TITANIC) Now, can you tell me , all of that make you fear ? you really want to become a seafarer as well? 4.My thought: - Maybe , because I have never been on board , so what I said above , they can wrong or right but it’s ok - I believe that many of us choose seafaring because of money, a few choose it because of interest , and others don’t know why they choose it - With me, I decided to become a seafarer and a captain in future , because I like adventure I dislike a quiet lifestyle if I said “ not as money “, I were lying myself and everyone , but money is really the last reason why I chose seafaring That ‘s a career which you can word hard , go from where to where , visit any country and earn money for my family All of purpose are succeed so It’s great To now , I believe that it’s a right choice - What’s about you ? can you share to me about your idea? Thank you your listening ! Enjoy your job! Good bye NAIROBI, Kenya — The Somali pirates who hijacked a Ukrainian freighter loaded with tanks, artillery, grenade launchers and ammunition said in an interview on Tuesday that they had no idea the ship was carrying arms when they seized it on the high seas Related The Lede: Q & A With a Pirate (September 30, 2008) Pirated Arms Freighter Cornered by U.S Navy (September 30, 2008) The World: Beware, Sharks P R Agents, Too (October 5, 2008) Times Topics: Piracy at Sea Times Topics: Somalia “We just saw a big ship,” the pirates’ spokesman, Sugule Ali, said in a telephone interview “So we stopped it.” The pirates quickly learned, though, that their booty was an estimated $30 million worth of heavy weaponry, heading for Kenya or Sudan, depending on whom you ask In a 45-minute interview, Mr Sugule spoke on everything from what the pirates wanted (“just money”) to why they were doing this (“to stop illegal fishing and dumping in our waters”) to what they had to eat on board (rice, meat, bread, spaghetti, “you know, normal humanbeing food”) He said that so far, in the eyes of the world, the pirates had been misunderstood “We don’t consider ourselves sea bandits,” he said “We consider sea bandits those who illegally fish in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas We are simply patrolling our seas Think of us like a coast guard.” The pirates who answered the phone call on Tuesday morning said they were speaking by satellite phone from the bridge of the Faina, the Ukrainian cargo ship that was hijacked about 200 miles off the coast of Somalia on Thursday Several pirates talked but said that only Mr Sugule was authorized to be quoted Mr Sugule acknowledged that they were now surrounded by American warships, but he did not sound afraid “You only die once,” Mr Sugule said He said that all was peaceful on the ship, despite unconfirmed reports from maritime organizations in Kenya that three pirates were killed in a shootout among themselves on Sunday or Monday night He insisted that the pirates were not interested in the weapons and had no plans to sell them to Islamist insurgents battling Somalia’s weak transitional government “Somalia has suffered from many years of destruction because of all these weapons,” he said “We don’t want that suffering and chaos to continue We are not going to offload the weapons We just want the money.” He said the pirates were asking for $20 million in cash; “we don’t use any other system than cash.” But he added that they were willing to bargain “That’s deal-making,” he explained Piracy in Somalia is a highly organized, lucrative, ransom-driven business Just this year, pirates hijacked more than 25 ships, and in many cases, they were paid million-dollar ransoms to release them The juicy payoffs have attracted gunmen from across Somalia, and the pirates are thought to number in the thousands The piracy industry started about 10 to 15 years ago, Somali officials said, as a response to illegal fishing Somalia’s central government imploded in 1991, casting the country into chaos With no patrols along the shoreline, Somalia’s tuna-rich waters were soon plundered by commercial fishing fleets from around the world Somali fishermen armed themselves and turned into vigilantes by confronting illegal fishing boats and demanding that they pay a tax
