Removal Brake hose To remove the brake hose, first disconnect the bracket side end (frame side) and then disconnect the rear axle housing side end To install, reverse this procedure Install the brake hose taking care not to twist it 2.Remove and installation Disassembly, inspection and correction Wash the disassembled metallic parts in a cleaning solvent or gas oil Wash the rubber parts in an alcohol solution (do not immerse for more the 30 seconds) and blow dry with compressed air Never immerse the rubber parts in a cleaning solvent or gas oil If the brake lining required replacement, replace as a brake lining kit Replacement Replacement of brake fluid Start the engine and keeping the compressed air pressure higher than 685 kPa (7 kgf/cm²), let it run at idle until the brake fluid is changed (1)Fit one end of the Vinyl Pipe, to the bleeder of front or rear wheel cylinder Place the other end of the pipe into an empty container Then, loosen the bleeder (2)Pump the brake pedal repeatedly until all brake fluid is removed from the brake fluid tank (3)Add new brake fluid into the brake fluid tank to the "H" line While doing so, pump the brake pedal repeatedly until the old fluid is completely replaced with the new one in the brake fluid line Use brake fluid conforming to SAE J1703f or FMVSS No 166, DOT3 Never mix different kinds of brake fluid as such a mixture can causes brake drag Always fill the brake fluid up the the "H" line Never use fluid of a different kind Watch closely the color of the brake fluid running out into the container When the old fluid is replaced with the new one, the color of the fluid changes (4)Install the fluid tank cap If the diaphragm in the cap is not in normal state, return it in normal state as shown in the illustration If brake fluid leaks from the cap, check the diaphragm for correct installation shown in the illustration (5)Bleed the brake system of air [Refer to (2).] 2.Bleeding of the brake system Start the engine and let it run at idle until the brake system is completely bled of air (1)Connect one end of, vinyl Pipe, to the plug of front or rear brake booster or the bleeder of wheel cylinder Place the other end of the Pipe into a container holding brake fluid Bleed the lines in the following order: A Front brake line Front brake booster → Right wheel cylinder → Left wheel cylinder B Rear brake line Rear brake booster → Right wheel cylinder → Left wheel cylinder (2)Depress the brake pedal slowly several times Then, with the brake pedal held depressed, loosen the plug or bleeder to discharge air together with the brake fluid Make sure that the brake fluid tank is filled with brake fluid up to the "H" level Keep adding brake fluid to maintain the "H" level at all times during the air bleeding procedure (3)Tighten the plug or bleeder, then release the brake pedal (4)Repeat steps (b) and (c) until the brake fluid runs clear of bubbles from the plug or bleeder (5)When the brake fluid runs clear with no bubble tighten the plug or bleeder to specification (6)After both lines have been completely bled of air adjust shoe clearance by referring to Section 5.4.1 Then, check for brake fluid level Also depress the brake pedal several times to check for possible fluid leaks Finally, perform the brake test If the ( ) warning lamp on the meter cluster lights up during the brake test, it means that the system is yet to be bled of air completely Bleed the system again Disassembly Removal of return spring Using the screwdriver, remove the return spring 2.Replacement of brake lining (1)Service points of removal When drilling out the brake lining rivets, use care not to enlarge or damage the brake shoe hole by the drill (2)Service points of installation A Rivet starting from the center portion and working toward the ends Make sure that no gap is produced between the shoe and lining B Stake the rivets to 17 to 19 kN (1200 to 1900 kgf) C Select the ling according to the operating conditions of the vehicle Use linings of the same size and paint color on right and left wheels of the same axle D After relining, check contact with the drum inside and correct poor contact if any Correct the lining as incorporated into the wheel and brake assembly Correction of drum If the drum has a cylindricity of 0.2 mm or poorer or is scratched, correct to the repair limit After machining, use and oversize lining Brake drum I.D Repair limit Limit 370 371 372 Machine the brake drum together with the wheel hub Disassembly Reassembly Reassembly Vehicles with 370 drum brake Installation of return spring Catch the shorter hook of the return spring onto the brake shoe assembly as shown on the caution plate attached to the brake shoe assembly Catch the other hook with a small phillips screwdriver and insert the tip of the screwdriver into the return spring mounting hole in the brake shoe assembly Then, pry the hook into the hole Using a screwdriver, install the return spring Adjustment Shoe clearance adjustment Before adjusting, bleed the brake system [ Except vehicles with 410 drum brake ] Jack up the axle and check to ensure that the hub is free from looseness 2.Remove the adjusting hole plug from the backing plate Using the special tool, Shoe Gap Adjuster, turn the adjuster of the wheel cylinder in the direction of an arrow stamped on the backing plate, until the tire drags a little when turned by hand The arrow is stamped on the area near the adjusting hole plug on the backing plate Make adjustment at two places on each wheel After depressing the brake pedal several times, make sure that the tire drags a little when turned by hand If the tire turns lightly, repeat the above procedure beginning with step (2) 4.Back off the adjuster of the wheel cylinder to notches in the direction opposite to that of the arrow Make adjustment at two places on each wheel 5.Turn the tire by hand and make sure that the tire does not drag, repeat the procedures beginning with steps (2) Remove the check hole plug from the backing plate Insert a feeler gauge between the brake drum and the lining Make sure that the clearance when slight resistance is felt while withdrawing the gauge is 0.2 mm Make the check at two places on each wheel
