Basketball Line 5 10 15 20 Although he created the game of basketball at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, Dr. James A. Naismith was a Canadian. Working as a physical education instructor at the International YMCA, now Springfield College, Dr. Naismith noticed a lack of interest in exercise among student during the wintertime. The New England winters were fierce, and the students balked at participating in outdoor activities. Naismith determined that a fast-moving game that could be played indoors would fill a void after the baseball and football seasons had ended. First he attempted to adapt outdoor games such as soccer and rugby to indoor play, but he soon found them unsuitable for confined areas. Finally, he determined that he would have to invent a game. In December of 1891, Dr. Naismith hung two old peach baskets at either end of the gymnasium at school, and, using a soccer ball and nine player on each side, organized the first basketball game. The early rules allowed three points for each basket and made running with the ball a violation. Every time a goal was made, someone had to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball. Nevertheless, the game became popular. In less than a year, basketball was being played in both the United States and Canada. Five years later, a championship tournament was staged in New York City, which was won by the Brooklyn Central YMCA. The teams had already been reduced to seven players, and five became standard in the 1897 season. When basketball was introduced as a demonstration sport in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, it quickly spread throughout the world. Some people believe that children can be better educated by being taught at home rather than by attending lessons at school. To what extent do you agree with this idea? Education is now generally regarded as a basic human (46) . In most countries, children from 5-11 receive (47) primary school education, and in others, they also receive secondary education during their (48) . However, there are some children who are entitled to go to school but whose parents prefer to homeschool them. In some countries this is a growing (49) . In this essay, I will explore the reasons for this (50) and the advantages of both approaches. First of all, in (51) education, pupils not only gain knowledge in a range of academic subject, but they also learn valuable social skills such as cooperation and team word, which can be used in their adult life. Secondly, staff have acquired (52) which means they can use effective teaching methods. They can also set benchmarks; in other words, they know exactly what children at different ages should be able to achieve. Home schooling, on the other hand, can allow a child to receive (53) . Attention, develop at their own pace and also concentrate more as they will not have to deal with (54) fellow students. Another point in favour of home schooling is that more lessons may involve e-learning and the use of interactive media. Hydrogen Line 5 10 15 Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe and was perhaps the first to from. It is among the ten most common elements on Earth as well and one of the most useful for industrial purposes. Under normal conditions of temperature, hydrogen is a gas. Designated as Hydrogen, hydrogen is the first element in the periodic table because it contains only one proton. Hydrogen can combine with a large number of other elements, forming more compounds than any of the others. Pure hydrogen seldom occurs naturally out a exists in most organic compounds, that is, compounds that contain carbon, which account for a very large number of compounds. Moreover, hydrogen is found in inorganic compounds. For example, when hydrogen burns in the presence of oxygen, it forms water. The lightest and simplest of the elements, hydrogen has several properties that make it valuable for many industries. It releases more heat per unit of weight than any other fuel. In rocket engines, tons of hydrogen and oxygen are burned, and hydrogen is used with oxygen for welding torches that produce temperatures as high as 4,000 degrees F and can be use in cutting steel. Fuel cells to generate electricity operate on hydrogen and oxygen. 6 20 25 Hydrogen also serves to prevent metals from tarnishing during heat treatments by removing the oxygen from them. Although it would be difficult to remove the oxygen by itself, hydrogen readily combines with oxygen to form water, which can be heated to steam and easily removed. Furthermore, hydrogen is one of the coolest refrigerants. It does not become a liquid until it reaches temperatures of -425 degrees F. Pure hydrogen gas is used in large electric generators to cool the coils. Future uses of hydrogen include fuel for cars, boats, planes, and other forms of transportation that currently require petroleum products. These fuels would be lighter, a distinct advantage in the aerospace industry, and they would also be cleaner, thereby reducing pollution in the atmosphere. Hydrogen is also useful in the food industry for a process known as hydrogenation. Products such as margarine and cooking oils are changed from liquids to semisolids by combining hydrogen with their molecules. Soap manufacturers also use hydrogen for this purpose. In addition, in the chemical industry, hydrogen is used to produce ammonia, gasoline, metyl alcohol, and many other important product. Question 66. What is the author‟s main purpose in the passage?
