They find out how much knowledge we have (1)____. But do they really show how intelligent we are? After all, isn’t it a fact that some people who are very successful academically don’t have any (2)____ sense? Intelligence is the speed (3)____ which we can understand and (4)____ to new situations and it’s usually tested by logic puzzles. Although scientists are now preparing (5)____ computer technology that will be able to “read” our brains, for the present tests are still the most popular ways of measuring intelligence. A person’s IQ is their intelligence as it is measured by a special test. The most common IQ tests are (6)____ by Mensa, an organization that was found in England in 1946. By 1976 it had 1,3000 members in Britain. Today there are 44,000 in Britain and 100,000 worldwide, (7)____ in the US. People taking the test are judged in (8)____ to an average score of 100 and those who score over 148 are entitled to join Mensa. This (9)____ at 2% of the population. Anyone from the age of six can take the tests. All the questions are straightforward and most people can answer them if (10)____ enough time. But that’s the problem – the whole point of the tests is that they’re against the clock. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to the environment. Recycling means finding ways to use products a second time. The motto of the recycling movement is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". The first step is to reduce garbage. In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs, boxes and expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging: usually paper, a box, and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should try to buy things that are wrapped simply, and to reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-quality products. When low quality appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones - a loss of more resources and more energy. For example, if a customer buys a high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired, the manufacturer receives an important message. In the same way, if a customer chooses a product with less packaging, that customer sends an important message to the manufacturers. To reduce garbage, the throwaway must stop. The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After customers empty the bottles, they return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinks collect the bottles, wash them, and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In some parts of the world, returning bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the garbage dumps have relatively little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles. The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be cleaned and used again. Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy to make one aluminum can as it does to run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect and recycle aluminum (for new cans), they help save one of the world's precious resources. Câu 11: What is the main topic of the passage? Fibers made of glass and transparent acrylic plastic are capable of conveying light energy, and when thousands of these fibers are combined in what is called a fiberscope, they can transmit images. The most common fiberscopes contain about 750,000 fibers, each 0.001 centimeter, or 10 microns, in diameter. For certain uses, the diameter of the fiber may be as small as 5 microns. Fiberscopes have a wide range of applications. In the medical field, physicians use fiberscopes to examine internal organs and as an aid in delicate surgeries. Miniature probes have also been developed to view muscle fiber, skin tissue, and blood cells. Fiberscopes have also found varied uses in industry, particularly to inspect or control operations in inaccessible areas. Bundles of fiberscopes fused together in a solid plate, called a faceplate, are being used in the manufacture of television tubes and other cathode-ray tube devices. The most far-reaching applications of fiber-optic technology are in communications. Optical fibers carry voice messages for telephone service. The sound of the voice is electronically broken down into thousands of pulses per second, which causes a transmitting laser to send coordinated pulses of light through the optical fibers. At the receiving end, the light pulses are converted to electrical signals and the voice message is reconstructed. Light-wave communication systems can handle an immensely greater number of telephone calls and television programs than the current system, and they will form the basis of the “electronic superhighway” expected to crisscross the nation in the near future of the information age. TOPIC: Write a letter to pen-pal to talk about your family rules. ……………, September 21 st , 2014 Dear Jim, I am writing to talk about my family rules. It is an interesting topic, isn’t it? It may br obvious that every family has its own rules. Mine has a few, apart from the traditional ones, especially for this school year as I am in the final year. First, I am not allowed to watch much TV, except when there is a good or very interesting film or an academic game show, or when I have finished all my homework and exercises. And hardly do my parents let me stay up so late at night. Next, my parents rarely permit me to go out with friends without necessary reasons for example birthdays or funerals. Besides, I have to take the balanced diets to keep fit for my coming examinations. And one more thing I have to keep up is talking on the phone. That is why I have to set a limit to my using of the phone. Furthermore, I don’t have to do much housework though we share that all together. Do you think I have a lot of rules to abide? Or I have no rights or freedom to do what I want or like? Tell me about your family rules, will you? It is much fun to hear about then. Write to me as soon as you can. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, Mai THE END Created & Released by Đỗ Bình – THPT Liễn Sơn, Lập Thạch, vĩnh Phúc – binhbac72@gmail.com .
