T h ese are rivalled b y the O b ere V orstadt, an early centre of the Counter- V V R eformation , which has an Ursuline con-vent as well as p atricians’ town h ouses an d t h e p a l aces o f t h e court elite. A l ong the Danube lies the E n glischer Garten, a p ark traversed by the road to the 1 6 th-century castle of t h e Witte l s b ac h s in near b y Grünau . T h e f o u n d ations contain t h e S tone o f S t Wo lfg an g , a p iece of red marble bearin g what is said to be the saint’s foot p rint. S u bstantial fra g ments of t he original Gothic altar of about 1 4 85 also remain. T h ere is a l so a carving o f S t Wolf - f f g an g wit h S t G eor g e a n d S t S igismund by H e inri c h H e lm sc hr ot o f L andshut (o r h is studio), and p aintings o f s cenes from the life of S t M ar y . I n the elongated northern nave, an d a f ew steps h ig h e r up , is the original ch a p e l with the miracle-workin g s p ring, which attracts p ilgrims. I n 1933 the first N a z i concentrat i on cam p was s et up h ere an d it was in use up until 1945, during which time 3 0 , 000 p risoners p erished here. The site of the c am p was o p ened to the p u bl ic as a p l ace o f r emembrance in 1 96 5. O ne of the buildings c ontains t h e KZ- Gede nk stätte Dac h au , a museum w h ic h d ocuments the histor y of the c oncentration cam p s and the c rimes against humanity that were committed here before a nd during World War II . O n the hill at the ed g e of t h e town, a palac e was b ui l t o n t h e site o f a 15t h -centur y c ast l e as a s u mmer resi d ence for the Wittels b achs. Of the o riginal four wings con- s tructed in 1558–77, only the s outhwest wing remains. The finest and most im p or t - ant building in the town is the fo rm e r C istercian a bb e y , s ituated on the wa y to A u gs - b urg and built in 1263–90. I ts esta bl is h ment was f un d e d by Ludwig II , the S evere , after th e exec u tion o f h is wi f e M aria o f B ra b ant, w h o was un j ustly accused of infidelity. I n 1 6 91–1754, remodelled b y Giovanni A ntoni o V i scar d i, it became one of the largest B a ro q ue abbeys in B ava r ia. The architect was E nrico Zucalli , and work started in 1701. It w as then interrupted, but restarted in 1717 under the direction of Joseph Effner, who d eviated from the original plans.
