Class details - Unit 12: THE ASIAN GAMES (Language focus) - Class: 11 B1 - Room: 22 - Time allotted: 45 minutes. II. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Distinguish the sounds /str/; /skr/; and /skw/. - Pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly. - Master the use of relative clauses and equivalent types of clauses without relative pronouns. - Use the structures correctly and appropriately to communicate. III. Teaching aids and materials Textbook, lesson plan, pictures, handouts, blackboard, PowerPoint. IV. Procedures Time &Stage Teacher’s activities Students’ activities I. Screen 2. Strength 3. Scratch 4. Street 5. Squeeze - Listen to instructions carefully and play the game. II. Presentation 6. Scream 7. Square 8. Screw 9. Strong 10. Squeak 11. Squirrel - T gives instructions: + “Good afternoon class! How are you? Let’s play a game. Let’s see. (T shows the game on slide). Ok, look at this! You know this game? I’ll explain + You work in groups. 1 table -1 group. + Your duty: Find meaning words beginning with “ S” in rows, columns, and crosses. +The group which has the most words is the winner. + You have 2 minutes to find words in this square. - Checking instructions: Is it clear? How much time do you have? Ok, are you ready? Let’s start! - T asks the groups having about 3 words  raise their hands. If many groups raise their hands, T asks the groups with 5 words… until T can find the winner. - T gives feedback: street screw square strong screen squeeze strength scratch squirrel scream squeak  LEAD-IN - T asks Ss: The words in first column have same sound? Which sound is it? - Which is the same sound for the words in second column? - How about the words in the third column? - Today, we will distinguish the difference between the consonant clusters : /str/ /skr/ /skw/ I. Pronunciation ( 10’) 1. T shows these sounds on the slide and introduces the sounds to Ss. /str/ /skr/ /skw/ street scream square strong screen squeeze strange screw squeak strength scratch squeal - T checks meaning. - T reads the sounds. - T asks Ss to listen carefully and repeat. - T asks some Ss to repeat the words. - T calls some Ss to read. 2. Practice reading aloud the sentences. 1. There was a strong man on the street at night 2. The strong man looked very strange 3. He was holding an ice-cream in one hand, and a rubber doll in the other hand 4. The man was eating the ice-cream, squeezing the doll and it was squeaking. 5. The man was screaming while walking to the square. 6. Nobody knew why he was doing the strange things. - T asks Ss to repeat the sentences. - T asks Ss (on the left hand) to read the first sentence, Ss on the left hand read the second, and take turn. II. Grammar (10) T gives EXAMPLE 1: + T shows a picture of book “Cho tôi một vé đi tuổi thơ”. - T elicits: what is this?  Book- short story. Who did write this short story? Nguyen Nhat Anh. - T reads 2 sentences: This is a short story. Nguyen Nhat Anh wrote this short story. - T asks Ss to combine 2 sentences. Listen and repeat. Work in groups and make sentences.  Expected answer : This is a short story which/that Nguyen Nhat Anh wrote. - T asks: What is the role of which/that in this sentence?  Expected answer : object - T says: we can omit which/that in this sentence.  This is a short story Nguyen Nhat Anh wrote. T gives EXAMPLE 2: - T gives a sentence: The comic book “Conan”, which I like most, is very interesting. - T asks: Can I omit “which” in this sentence?  Expected answer : No -T explains: because of comas. T gives EXAMPLE 3: The song was interesting. We listened to it last night.  The song to which we listened last night was interesting. - Can we omit “which” in this sentence? Why? - Expected answer: No - T explains: because of preposition. T gives some NOTES: - Relative pronouns “whom, which, that” can be omitted when they are OBJECTS in the sentences. - But we can’t omit : “whom , which” after a comas and a preposition III. Practice (10) Exercise 1: Tick (ü) the sentences in which the relative pronoun can be omitted and explain. 1. He’s the man that I told you about. 2Here is the beach which is the safest for swimmers. 3. Do you know the American woman whose name is Margaret? 4. What was the name of the girl who we met - Work individually. yesterday? 5. I met someone that said he knew you. 6. The noise that he made wakes everybody up. 7. The girl whom you are going to see is Nam’s sister. 8. The table which was broken has been repaired. - T asks Ss to work individually and do exercise 1 in 3 minutes. - T asks Ss to work in pairs and share their ideas. - T checks and asks Ss to give explanation. Answer: ü 1, 4,6,7 Exercise 2 Complete each of the following sentences, using suitable sentence in the box to make a relative clause without a relative pronoun / with a preposition. Mary is wearing it you lost it I want to travel on it we met him this morning I slept in it we are living in it I bought it yesterday I work with them 1. I like the diamond ring……… ………………. 2. The flight ……………………… was fully booked. 3. Have you found the bike…… ? 4. The dictionary ……………………… is expensive, but very interesting. 5. I did not like the man…………………………… 6. The house …………………….is not in good condition. 7. The bed………….……… was very modern 8. I enjoy my job because I like people……………………. Answer: 3. you lost 4. The flight ……………………… was fully booked - T asks Ss to do exercise in pairs. Do exercises. - Play the game. IV. Production (8) V. Homework ( 2minutes) - T checks and gives feedback. T gives Ss pictures and some cues and asks Ss to make sentences using relative pronouns. - T gives a model.
