Bill Gates is the richest man in the world Recently, he said that he would give $100 million to help people in India who have HIV virus The Indian government was unhappy about this, however It said that Mr Gates' gift would make panic in India because people would think that the problem of HIV/AIDS in India was getting worse Mr Gates was not worried by this reaction, however "There is
a big, big problem with AIDS in India," he said "And we have seen in other country what happens with AIDS if you don't take early actions."
While he was being in India, he visited an AIDS hospice in Delhi Early, the Indian government said that it was very unhappy with a report who predicted that 20 million to 25 million Indians would probably have the virus by 2010 The report also said that India would soon be the country with the largest number AIDS cases On the moment, South Africa has most cases of AIDS in the world A new, shocked report says that Eurasia - India, China and Russia - will soon have the same kind of AIDS pandemic that is destroying sub-Saharan Africa
Trang 4SECTION D: READING COMPREHENSION
I Read the following text and choose the best answer for the questions below Write your answer in the space provided.
Drunken driving, sometimes called America’s socially accepted form of murder, has become a national epidemic Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to
an incredible 250,000 over the past decade
A drunken driver is usually defined as one with a 0.01 blood alcohol content or roughly three beers, glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the
American macho image and judges were lenient in most court, but the drunken slaughter has recently caused
so many well-publicized tragedies, especially involving young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant
Twenty states have raised the legal drinking age to 21, reversing a trend in the 1960s to reduce it to 18 After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18 - 20-year-old drivers was more than double,
so the state recently upped it back to 21
Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programmes to help young people to develop “responsible attitudes” about drinking and teach them to resist peer pressure to drink
Tough new laws have led to increased arrests and tests and, in many areas already, to a marked decline
in fatalities Some states are also penalizing bars for serving customers too many drinks A tavern in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was “obviously intoxicated” and later drove off the road, killing a nine-year-old boy
As the fatalities continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well
of the 13 years of national prohibition of alcohol that began in 1919, what President Hoover called the “noble experiment” They forget that legal prohibition didn’t stop drinking, but encouraged political corruption and organized crime As with the booming drug trade generally, there is no solution
1 Drunken driving has become a major problem in America because _
C accidents attract so much publicity D drinking is a socially accepted habit in America
2 The word “macho” in the passage mostly means .
A “behaving in a way that is traditionally typical of strong and brave men”
B “showing extreme courage and admired by many people”
C “dealing with danger, pain, or difficulty with courage and confidence”
D “feeling that one is better and more important than other people”
3 Statistics issued in New Jersey suggested that _
C the level of drinking increased in the 1960s D the legal drinking age should be raised
4 All of the following statements are true EXCEPT
A laws recently introduced in some states have resulted in fewer serious accidents
B twenty states raised the legal drinking age to 21 in 1960s
C reformers think educational programmes should be instituted to help young people
D some Americans speak highly of the 13 years of national prohibition of alcohol
5 The problem of drinking and driving is difficult to solve mainly because
C legal prohibition has already failed D legislation alone is not sufficient

WORLD ISSUES
Over the past thirty years or so, the methods used for collecting money from the public to aid the developing world have changed out of all recognition, (1) , and the increasing awareness among the population that something must be done At the beginning of this period, it would be common to put money in a collecting box, perhaps on the street or at church, or to receive a small “flag” to wear in a lapel The 1960s saw the development of shops (2) , donated by the public, and which also began to sell articles manufactured
in the developing world in projects set up by the parents charity, to guarantee a fair income to local people The next development was probably the charity event, (3) to run, cycle, swim, etc and collected money from friends and relatives according to how far or long they managed to keep going The first hint of what was to become the most successful means of raising money was charity record, where the artists donated their time and talent, and the process from sales went to a good cause This was perhaps a reflection of the fact that young people felt increasingly concerned about the obvious differences between life in Europe and the United States, and that in most of Africa and Asia, (4) , besides being clearly shown on television The problems were becoming hard to avoid, (5) Why was so little being done? The huge success of Band Aid, and subsequent televised concerts, reflected the power of the media and of music in particular, but also differed in style from other events People phoned up in their thousands on the day and pledged money by quoting their credit card numbers After all, if you have enough money to buy CDs and a stereo player, you can afford something for the world’s starving children
A with the money donated by the public
B along with the gravity of the problems faced
C in which participants were sponsored
D which show second-hand goods
E and which existed in a real life
F but a felling of frustration was building up
G and this concern was reflected in songs

There came a time, maybe 20,000 years ago, when man, instead of (1) merely a hunter, started to domesticate animals The dog helped in his hunting activities, geese and ducks were kept and bred as a source
of food, (2) was easier than (3) to go out and hunt them Once humans had domesticated animals, they turned their (4) to plants Instead of being nomads, drifting from place to place following the game animals, they began to create farms and thus enter (5) more settled way of life Villages and towns sprang up in places where previously (6) had been only a hamlet Now animals and plants began
to be kept not merely for food, but also for interest’s sake or for their beauty
The first writers on animal life was Aristotle, in 33 BC, and Pliny, in 75 AD, but for many hundreds of years
after Pliny the subjects of natural history, in common with many (7) areas of knowledge, hardly progressed at all For the most part such zoos as existed were in the hands of the dilettante nobility and were no more than second-rate menageries, without (8) scientific purpose.
However, in the seventeenth century, naturalists began to realize that they needed a system (9)
classifying living things because as more plants and animals were discovered, it was difficult to (10)
track of them all
