transitive verb vừa là intransitive verb (không có direct object theo sau)

- Travel increases one’s knowledge= Ði một ngày đàng học một sàng khôn

- The membership increases 50 percent (becomes larger)=Số hội viện tăng thêm 50%

* Augment: raise, increase

- The boy augmented (increased) his allowance by mowing lawns=Cậu bé tăng thêm tiền gia đình cho bằng cách cắt cỏ

- She taught night classes to augment her income=Cô ấy dạy ban đêm để tăng thêm lợi nhuận

* Rise (intransitive) / raise (transitive: cần có object theo sau)

- Rise up early=dậy sớm

- Get up: He rose from the chair=Anh ta đứng dậy

- Mọc: The sun rises in the East=Mặt trời mọc ở phương Ðông

- Tăng thêm: We have raised the price of bread=Chúng tôi đã tăng giá bánh mì

Lưu ý: Increase và raise cùng nghĩa là tăng thêm, nhưng để ý đến cách dùng của increase

và raise trong câu sau đây:

- The price of bread has increased by 10%=Giá bánh mì tăng lên 10% (increase là

intransitive)

- We have increased the price of bread=Chúng tôi đã tăng giá bánh mì (increase là transitive) Hay có thể nói: We have raised the price of bread

Tóm lại: Increase, rise và augment có thể thay thế cho nhau trong nghĩa tăng thêm Nhưng rise là intransitive verb They increased the price=They raised the price=Họ tăng

giá [Không nói *they rose the price, nhưng có thể nói: The river has risen=Mực nước

sông đã dâng lên (hay: has gone up, has increased)]
