It horried me to my core because we all know what a huge amount of trust it takes to put our kids in the hands of others. That mom faced a lot of criticism for even having a nanny in the rst place, but I am not even going to grace that with a response. What did disturb me were reports that the nanny had recently changed antidepressants and family had reported that she had been acting out of character. Now, I know many women who need chemical help to balance themselves to be able to live an ordinary and happy life. But has the “happy pill” become a little too quick of a x? And do we stop to read about the little side-effects? But honestly how many of us feel a bit of the baby blues or at the least a bit overwhelmed at how much our lives have changed since having a baby, even if it’s not fullblown PND? In my opinion we do not have enough maternal support for moms. We don’t have enough midwives who make housecalls that are so reassuring to a new mom. We don’t have enough lactation consultants to ensure every mom gets the breastfeeding support she needs. We don’t have the freedom to enjoy long maternity leaves without nancial worry if we do work. Moms are just not supported (and 40 percent of us are single on top of that!). And so, when we turn to our doctors, why do they put us on a pill and hope we will go away? I read it all in just a few hours it was so informative and easy to read. Last night I folded a pillow up and put it under the mattress just like you mentioned in the article, and it worked like a charm! She didn’t fall out of her cot and slept through with no problems. The innocence of children never ceases to amaze me and the gems that occasionally come out of their mouths are precious. These toddler moments make it totally worth it for me! My elderly mother came up from Cape Town to visit us recently and my daughter was instantly taken with her. An endless round of tea parties, dress up and beauty school ensued. One afternoon my little girl was ouncing around in her fairy princess costume, wand and all. Granny was taking a break on the couch but madam wouldn’t have any of it. She walked up to my mother, proudly announced, “Gran, I’m going to make you beautiful!” and waved her wand in the general direction of my mom’s face. Seeing her wrinkles still there, she said sadly, “Oh, it didn’t work.” My mom and I cried we were laughing so much! CHARLENE TRUTER I AM STILL A MOTHER What denes being a mom? I have asked myself this repeatedly after Mother’s Day last year in our of ce. A discussion about what was done to make the day special for my colleagues’ wives, girlfriends and exes soon turned into quite a heated debate. JACKIE GUETNER GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT I am mom to 20-month-old busy bee Cianais and currently four months along with my second pregnancy. With the new baby on the way and Cianais getting so big we decided it was time to make the transition from cot to bed. We took the side panel of her cot off and padded the oor with pillows on the rst night of the big move. Cianais tumbled out of her cot at 3AM. Wary of this happening again we put her mattress on the oor, but she ended up sleeping half on and half off the mattress. While at my local Woolies a few days later, I grabbed my monthly copy of my favourite mag (Your Baby of course!) and was utterly relieved and delighted to nd your article on making the transition from cot to bed. R500 Winning letter I’m an angel mom Last year I was pregnant with twins – two little boys – but at week 25 was admitted to hospital on bedrest. My mucus plug had come loose and I was in labour. I was injected with steroids to help develop their lungs and given tons of meds, but nothing could stop them coming. Fransua and Ruan were born on 6 September 2012, just over two months earlier than their due dates, and weighed 945g and 900g respectively. They were immediately whisked into the NICU at Blaauwberg hospital. Two weeks later I received the phone call that no parent should ever get. Ruan had passed away. From that sad day on little Fransua did incredibly well, gaining weight and growing strong. It was almost as if his brother had touched him in passing. Fransua is now three months old and weighs 2.4kg. He’s doing well. I’m also an angel mom. An angel mom is someone who carries her baby in her heart instead of her arms. Sometimes she feels like a failure, but at other times she is proud to be an angel mom as only special women carry angels. I know I will never really let go of Ruan, but his little brother needs me too. To all angel moms out there – you are not alone! I know your life will be a rollercoaster ride forever. You’ll have your ups and your downs, but your angel babies will forever be in your hearts. SHANTEL GENTLE MARCH/APRIL 2013 09 SEND IT! his girlfriend, the nice Sunday lunch he had cooked and the time spent with his girlfriend and baby girl (now two). He then turned to me and asked what my husband did for me, and then he answered his question himself: “Oh, but he can’t do anything because you are still pregnant!” It immediately brought tears to my eyes as two years ago we had lost our little boy due to a birth defect and complications following an operation to correct this. I asked him why he doesn’t see me as a mother. Does the fact that my son is not alive make me any less of a mother? I carried my baby for almost nine months. I had nausea, heartburn, leg cramps, and all the usual symptoms associated with pregnancy. I went through a whole week of early labour but my son was eventually born through an emergency c-section. I sat up at night expressing milk so that he could be tube fed, I sat at his incubator every single day for hours on end, believing everything would be okay. One month and nine days after he was born and the doctors told us: “There is nothing more we can do for him, you should rather switch off the machines, we don’t know how long he is still going to live. Don’t worry he won’t feel any pain, it will be a peaceful death.” I still have the stretch marks and the “battle scar” from my little one’s birth, but I’m not a mom? I brought a child into this world, nursed him, took care of him. I am a mother. Today I’m 27 weeks pregnant, and the pain is still there. HAYLEY KOMEN I had a wonderful gynae who guided me throughout the pregnancy. I delivered via c-section, and what a wonderful experience! I was very relaxed, and the happiest mom in the world when I heard that fi rst cry!
