Aunt Leah collected pottery, and when I got there, she said me that she wants to show me her new bowl. She told she has just bought it. It was beautiful. When Aunt Leah went to answer the door; I picked up the bowl. It slipped from my hands and smashed to pieces on the floor. When Aunt came back, I screamed and said what the cat had just broken your new bowl. Aunt Leah got this funny look on her face and told me that it isn’t important. I didn’t sleep at all that night, and the next morning, I called my aunt and confessed that I have broken her bowl. She said I had known that all along. READING (6,0 points) Activity 1: Read the following passage and circle the letter A, B, C or D next to the right word in each number to complete the passage. During the winter, most London auctioneers have wine auctions. Some are of wines for (1) drinking, but most are of fine wines. Last winter, at Christies, a dozen bottles of Lafite 1945 were (2) down at £158 the bottle. 1945 and 1961 are the two most (3) vintage years for claret. Of course, that is not the maximum you could pay. Not (4) ago, an American at Christies paid £8,500 for one bottle of Lafite 1806. Sometimes, it is a matter of personal (5) by the very rich. At other times there can be a (6) objective. Last October, a restaurateur from Memphis, paid £9,000 for a magnum - that is, a two-bottle size - of 1864 Lafite. He (7) 30 people $1,500 each for a dinner with a small glass of the wine. It was (8) ten 5 times the cost of the wine in publicity for his restaurant. Of course, some people buy wine purely for investment. On the other hand, a real wine lover will use the (9) value of good wine to pay for his own drinking. A syndicate of four will buy a (10) of Lafite 1945 at £2,000. Each takes three bottles. Then each drinks one bottle, and keeps the other two to sell later at the (11) price as the three cost in the first place. That is, naturally, taking inflation into (12) . But there is no (13) that a bottle of wine at $1,000 is a hundred times (14) than one that costs $10. Perhaps the top price you can pay for wine to enjoy for drinking is $100 a bottle. Above $100, you are paying for something (15) than taste. 1. A. usual B. common C. daily D. everyday 2. A. knocked B. hit C. banged D. hammered 3. A. up-to-date B. recent C. now D. modern 4. He would have preferred that (12) …………………children be taught at hearing schools. He did not support schools for the deaf. Bell felt that deaf people (13) ……….…… not mix with hearing people if they went to separate schools. Bell was upset about other things, too. He noticed that deaf people socialized with other deaf people. He felt that (14) ………… ……… with other deaf people was bad. Deaf people should socialize with hearing people, he thought. Bell tried to start a new law that would make it illegal for deaf people to marry each other. He gave up his idea (15) ……………………… he realized that such a law could not be enforced. Activity 4: Read the article carefully and answer the following questions by writing the name of the person next to his or her opinion. Sometimes you must choose more than one person. The first one has been done for you as an example. Are you too old to be a child, but too young to be a teenager? We interviewed five kids between the ages of ten and fourteen, and asked them what were the most difficult things about being their age. Here are their replies. Robyn, aged ten I think the main problem when you are ten is that if you want to do something, or you don't like something, no-one cares, because "you're just a kid". My sister is just two years older than me, yet she is allowed to do all sorts of things I can't, because everyone thinks I'm still a baby. I don't really care about boys, but I have a friend called Darren. He's nice, but he's not a boyfriend or anything like that. Sharon, aged eleven. At school it can be difficult with some of the other girls. There are problems with bullies, and often we have too much schoolwork to do. It's made even more difficult at home, where sometimes I feel unhappy and frustrated that I can't get on with my brothers and sisters, and sometimes we fight and then our parents get angry with us. 7 Terry, aged twelve. I have trouble growing up, because I feel I have no control over my body. Going through puberty is difficult and sometimes it's frightening. You get pimples, and your voice changes and sometimes you feel really self-conscious. Also, you have more responsibilities than you had before and you spend a lot of time away from your family so you have to learn how to look after yourself. All your friends seem to know what they're doing, and sometimes you feel very lonely and left out. Darren, aged thirteen I get really stressed out, because there is so much schoolwork. You've always got homework, and tests to do at the school. And it's frightening that what you do now can change the way the rest of your life will be. Sometimes, we don't know what to do, and we don't know who we can ask for help. Also, there is the question of girls. We feel very embarrassed and self-conscious, everybody talks about going out with them all the time, and sometimes I feel that I'm the only one who doesn't know what to do when I'm around girls. Susan, aged fourteen. I spend a lot of time with girls who are my age, and sometimes I have to fit in with them, even if I don't really agree with it sometimes. Otherwise, people make you feel you are weird, and different. Also, you don't know what to do about boys. Everybody else has got a boyfriend except me, but so many of the boys are just so stupid I couldn't go out with them. It would be nice to talk to someone about it, but the only people I know well are my friends the same age, and none of them will admit they have any problems. 1. Who thinks that their friends are coping better than they are? Terry, Darren 2. Who feels that the physical changes of adolescence are disturbing? …………………… 3. Who feels ignored? ……………………………………………………………………… 4. Who worries about the future? …………………………………………….……………. 5. Who finds that being more independent has problems? ……………………….……… 6. Who has problems with people at school? ……………………………………………… 7. Who has the most problems at home? (two answers) ………………………….……… 8. Who tries hardest to get on with their friends? …………………………………………. 9. Who seems happiest with someone of the opposite sex? ………………………………. 10. Who sometimes feel uncomfortable with themselves? (two answers) ……………… 11. Who would like to be older? …………………………………………………………… IV. WRITING (6,0 points) Activity 1: Finish the second sentence so that it means exactly the same as the first one. 1.
