It transformed the way designers work, introduced many innovative design and layout features, and served millions of design customers worldwide for close to 20 years. However, its role as a leading publishing tool has now passed to Adobe InDesign CS, which offers a more robust design toolset and a modern codebase that can adapt easily and swiftly to the needs of today’s designers. That’s why Adobe no longer plans to release any feature-based versions of Adobe PageMaker, nor do we plan to offer a version of PageMaker with native support for Mac OS X. While we will continue to sell PageMaker 7.0 and to offer technical support and customer service for the foreseeable future, we encourage you to switch to Adobe InDesign CS PageMaker Edition. As a loyal PageMaker customer, you’re entitled to this specially priced version—less than half the retail cost of Adobe InDesign CS—which delivers: • Adobe InDesign CS software and all of the productivity-enhancing layout and design features it offers. • The Adobe PageMaker Plug-in Pack, a set of new plug-ins based on popular PageMaker features and enhanced for use in Adobe InDesign CS, including an easy-to-use template browser and more than 80 templates created by award-winning professional designers. • Comprehensive training materials produced specically to help PageMaker users get to work quickly and explore InDesign features more deeply. Adobe PageMaker Plug-in Pack With each release since version 1.0, Adobe InDesign has introduced more tools to help designers streamline production tasks and output pages precisely, while nurturing a exible creative process. Many of the fea- tures in InDesign CS—from character styles and built-in table support to gradients, arrowheads, editable drop shadows, and direct export of Adobe PDF les—are at the top of the wish list for PageMaker users. That said, PageMaker has a few popular features of its own that are critical to those who want to make the switch to InDesign. The Adobe PageMaker Plug-in Pack takes advantage of the exible modularity of InDesign software to add such features as basic imposition, bullets and numbering, data merge, PageMaker compatible keyboard shortcuts, and a Windows-style toolbar. When you install the Adobe PageMaker Plug-in Pack, the following features are added to InDesign CS: PageMaker 6.0 publication converter With the PageMaker Plug-in Pack, you can convert PageMaker 6.0 documents and templates to InDesign CS format, and in some cases even x damaged PageMaker les (with limitations). This capability expands the conversion support currently built into InDesign CS, which enables you to open PageMaker 6.5–7.x and QuarkXPress 3.3–4.x documents. Information about converting PageMaker documents to InDesign CS format is available in the training materials included with the PageMaker Edition and online at www.adobe.com/indesign. InBooklet Special Edition plug-in for document imposition One of the most popular “can’t live without it” features in PageMaker is the Build Booklet command, which lets you automatically rearrange the pages in a document so that they will fall in a correct sequence after bring printed, folded, trimmed, and bound—a task known as imposition. InDesign CS PageMaker Edi- tion now offers similar functionality through the InBooklet Special Edition plug-in, created by third-party developer, a lowly apprentice production (alap), and included in the PageMaker Plug-in Pack. Create standard impositions, such as 2-up saddle stitch, from individual InDesign CS documents using the InBooklet SE plug-in. Control margins, gap, bleed, creep, crossover, and signature size in the resulting imposition. 3 The InBooklet SE plug-in enables you to impose pages from a single InDesign document with complete control over margins, gaps, bleed, creep, and crossover traps (choose File > InBooklet). You can start an imposition on any page, include specic page ranges and spreads, and choose among several imposi- tion styles, including 2-up saddle stitch, 2-up perfect bound, and 2-, 3-, and 4-up consecutive. The actual reordering of pages in the document is handled at print time to produce faster and more reliable results. However, you can preview your imposition in the InBooklet dialog box. Final printing is performed using standard InDesign print controls. In addition, you can choose the Create New Document option to build imposed spreads in a separate InDesign le, leaving the original le untouched. Everything in the InDesign imposition, including the InBooklet crop and registration marks, remains fully editable, so you can enter late-stage edits and proong changes, as necessary, into imposed spreads. Automated bullets and numbering Bulleted and numbered lists are common design elements used to organize information and make it easier for your readers to skim. Now the PageMaker Plug-in Pack adds automated bullets and numbering to your InDesign CS toolkit. The fastest way to format a bulleted or numbered list is to select the text, and click the Bulleted List or Numbered List icons on the PageMaker toolbar (see page 6 for more details about this toolbar). If you then change the list—for example, insert another item between item 2 and item 3 in a num- bered list—InDesign CS automatically renumbers the entire list. Alternatively, you can exercise more control over the design of your bulleted and numbered lists by choos- ing Bullets and Numbering from the Paragraph palette menu and then specifying the options you want. In addition to deciding whether the list type is Bullets or Numbers, you can choose a Font Family, Font Style, Size, Color, Position (ush left or hanging), Indent, and Tab Position. You can work with the bullet glyphs available in a particular font, or add other bullet glyphs from other fonts. For example, you can easily apply a bullet glyph from Zapf Dingbats, even if the rest of the text is styled with a different font. A Preview option enables you to view the affect of your choices in your layout as you work. All of the options available in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box are also available on a Bullets and Numbering tab in the Para- graph Styles dialog box, so you can easily incorporate automated bullets into your named styles. Preview how the resulting imposition will be output using the InBooklet SE plug-in. Style automated bullets easily in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box. If you insert a new item between two numbered bullets, InDesign CS automatically updates the other numbered items in the list. 4 Data merge The PageMaker Plug-in Pack installs a new Data Merge palette, which enables you to efciently create customized publications, such as catalogs, direct mail campaigns, business cards, form letters, and mailing labels, using text and image data saved in a data source le. Personalized content is highly effective in a wide range of marketing efforts from non-prot fundraising to high-end catalog sales. In addition, being able to quickly generate business cards and other personalized content is useful for many businesses. By adding Data Merge capabilities to InDesign CS, you get the design quality and control you require and the produc- tion automation you need to be your most effective. The data source document used in a data merge typically originates from a spreadsheet or database appli- cation, but you can also create your own using a text editor. The data source must be saved as a comma- delimited le (.CSV) or as a text le (.TXT). In a CSV le, each row constitutes a record, and each column delimits a data eld in that record. In a TXT le, paragraph breaks dene records and tabs dene data elds. A data source le can include text or pathnames to images, which will be placed into appropriately tagged image frames, as long as you insert an @ (at sign) as the rst character in the le heading. Setting up a design template into which the data is merged is easy. First, design your basic layout. Then, use the Data Merge palette to import a data source le (choose Select Data Source from the Data Merge palette menu). Next, select frames or click insertion points where you want text or image les to appear and click the name of the data type in the Data Merge palette list to assign a tag. Apply any paragraph styles and graphics settings that you want to appear on every page in your custom document. Check your work by clicking the Preview Record option on the Data Merge palette. InDesign automatically selects the rst record in the CSV or TXT le, but you can also preview other records by clicking the Next Record or Previ- ous Record arrows in the Data Merge palette. Finally, choose Create Merged Document from the palette menu. InDesign then ows the data into the template you’ve set up, automatically adding pages as neces- sary to handle all of the records. These options are versatile enough to handle any kind of layout, whether you’re incorporating a single record per page to create personalized letters or tiling multiple records per page to produce business cards, labels, and more. Click an insertion point where you want a particular piece of merged text to appear and then tag it with the appropriate item in the Data Merge palette list. For example, click an insertion point under the Warranty head and tag it with Warranty to populate the resulting document with warranty information in this location. Apply a paragraph style to the text, so that all of the resulting records are auto- matically styled the way you want. Preview how the records in the CSV or TXT le will merge with your tagged template by checking the Preview Record option in the Data Merge palette and then clicking the Next Record or Previous Record buttons. 5 Position tool The new Position tool works similarly to the Crop tool in PageMaker 7.0. It also eliminates the need to switch between InDesign CS tools to resize and move images and their frames or to reposition content in relation to frames. To select the Position tool, click the Direct-Selection tool in the toolbox, press your mouse button down, and select the Position tool. Then do the following: • Place the Position tool over a frame handle, and then click and drag to resize the frame. Press the Com- mand (Mac OS) or Ctrl (Window) key as you click and drag to scale the contents with the frame. • Place the Position tool over an image to switch temporarily to the Hand tool, and then click and drag to adjust the portion of the image that’s visible in the frame. A ghosted back preview of the image appears to help you make exactly the adjustment you want as quickly as possible. • Place the Position tool over an image and press the Command (Mac OS) or Ctrl (Window) key as you click and drag to move the image and its frame together. Note If no objects are selected, the Position tool cursor changes as it moves over different elements to indi- cate that it can select an item. Template browser and professional template sets Adobe InDesign CS PageMaker Edition comes with more than 80 templates created by leading designers from Adams Morioka, CMDC, Concrete Design Communications, Gee + Chung, HarperCollins, Mucca Design, Scott Design, and studio blue to help jumpstart your projects. The PageMaker Edition also includes a Template Browser palette (choose Window > Template Browser) for browsing, adding, deleting, and recategorizing templates, and for opening templates as new documents which you can then modify. In the Template Browser, you can view templates by Publication Type or by Visual Theme. Publication types include ads, books and booklets, business cards, CD/DVD art, cards/postcards, certicates, forms, letterhead, menus, newsletters, posters, and trade catalogs. Viewing templates by visual theme categorizes them by the designer who created them. Clicking a thumbnail in the Template Browser displays key infor- mation about the template, such as its le name, template name, creation or modication date, author, fonts, colors, width and height, and le size, as well as offering designer notes about its use. The Template Browser gives you extensive control: In addition to adding, deleting, and recategorizing templates, you can sort, search for, and rename templates, control their thumbnail size, and much more. Place the Position tool cursor over an image. When it changes to the Hand tool, click and hold down the mouse button. A ghosted pre- view of the entire image appears to help you reposition the contents of the frame. Then drag the image to a new location in the frame. Use the Template Browser to view and select among more than 80 templates produced by award-winning designers, or to add and select templates that you’ve designed. Sort by Publication Type or Visual Theme to locate the style of template you need. 6 PageMaker compatible keyboard shortcuts If you’re like most designers, you’ve invested time learning keyboard shortcuts that help you work as rapidly as possible—so the last thing you want to do is to teach your ngers a whole new set of shortcuts. That’s why you can switch the keyboard shortcuts in InDesign CS to match the familiar shortcuts from PageMaker 7.0. Simply choose Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts, select Shortcuts for PageMaker 7.0 for Set, and click OK. In addition, InDesign CS lets you edit shortcuts for practically every tool and command on an application or palette menu. This means you can customize the application to work just the way you want. PageMaker toolbar The Windows-style PageMaker toolbar—which is similar to ones used in Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word—gives both Mac OS and Windows users easy access to commonly used commands, such as New Document, Open Document, Save, Print, Find/Change, Insert Pages, Remove Pages, Text Frame Options, Place, and Update Links. It also speeds up access to the Character, Paragraph, and Text Wrap palettes; adds another high-speed way to zoom in and out of pages; and enables you to quickly launch Illustrator or Photoshop software, or to initiate packaging InDesign documents for GoLive or exporting them as Adobe PDF les. Open the toolbar by choosing Window > PageMaker Toolbar. Like the new Control palette in InDesign CS, the toolbar docks to the top or bottom of the monitor (Mac OS) or document window (Win- dows), or oats freely over your document area. Alternatively, you can dock the toolbar to the right or left edge of your workspace. For information about the Control palette, see page 8. Training materials Getting to work quickly with InDesign isn’t hard, but extra information can help you dive deeper. Adobe InDesign CS PageMaker Edition includes comprehensive training materials developed specically to help PageMaker users make a rapid and successful transition to InDesign: Watch professional training videos and refer to an online Help system designed to answer how-to questions about InDesign from a PageMaker user’s perspective. Whatever training support you need, you’ll nd built right into the PageMaker Edition. Master Adobe InDesign CS with condence In addition to the added value of the PageMaker Plug-in Pack, InDesign CS itself offers numerous features designed specically to appeal to Adobe PageMaker users. Perhaps the most important is its standard Adobe interface and tight integration with other Adobe products, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. If you know one of these programs—and most PageMaker users do—you’ll be able to master InDesign CS with condence by putting that knowledge to work. InDesign also offers new and improved versions of two popular PageMaker features: the Story Editor for efciently editing text and the Control palette for context-sensitive access to text-formatting and graphics-handling options. InDesign CS even takes Adobe PDF creation to a new level by directly exporting Acrobat 6.0, 5.0, and 4.0 les for review, high-end printing, and interactive viewing. Switch the keyboard shortcuts in InDesign CS to match those in PageMaker by selecting a built-in set that comes with the PageMaker Edition. Windows-style toolbar with commonly used commands 7 Standard Adobe user interface InDesign CS shares standard Adobe commands, tools, palettes, and keyboard shortcuts with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. This integration enables you to put your knowledge of other Adobe products to work with InDesign CS. The result? You can get to up to speed quickly and work more efciently because it’s so smooth and intuitive to move from program to program. Native support for Photoshop and Illustrator les InDesign CS imports and outputs native Photoshop (PSD) les saved in Photoshop 5.0, 6.x, 7.0, and CS, including duotone, tritone, and quadtone les and PSD or TIFF les that contain spot channels. You can also import native Illustrator les, or copy and paste Illustrator objects into InDesign. If you uncheck Prefer PDF When Pasting (General Preferences) before pasting Illustrator objects, they come in as editable AICB les—you can then edit paths, colors, and more in InDesign. If you leave Prefer PDF When Pasting checked, InDesign places Illustrator objects in their native PDF format, which you cannot edit. InDesign CS even offers new support for an Illustrator shortcut: Use a quick keyboard shortcut (Option-click on the Mac OS and Alt-click on Windows) to open Photoshop, Illustrator, and other linked les in their original application, and then make changes, save the les, and automatically update your InDesign layouts. Shared Adobe technologies Adobe InDesign CS, Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, GoLive CS, InCopy CS, and Acrobat 6.0 Professional offer consistent font handling, color management, on-screen graphics display, and PDF support because of shared Adobe technologies. These core technologies help to ensure that you get the results you want, no matter which of these Adobe products you’re using. Story Editor With InDesign CS, you can enter and edit text in the new Story Editor, an integrated word-processing view that works similarly to the one in PageMaker, helping you change and copy-t text across multiple text frames and pages more efciently. As you work in Story Editor, changes to the text appear in the layout, so you can see how they affect your design. Viewing and applying paragraph and character styles, XML tags, and text formatting is fast and easy, especially when applying styles to text that runs across several pages. Note Adobe InDesign CS, Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, GoLive CS, and Acrobat 6.0 Professional are part of the Adobe Creative Suite. The Adobe Cre- ative Suite is a complete design solution that provides today’s creative professionals with the tools they need to create and publish content for print and the Web faster, more easily, and more affordably than ever. InCopy CS is sold separately. The Story Editor is highly customizable, particularly if you prefer the look of a classic word-processing system. Story Editor Display preferences include font, font size, font color, line spacing, and background color. The text cursor can be set to a standard, barbell, thick, or block shape, and blinking can be turned on or off. An anti-aliasing option gives you control over the onscreen appearance of text. A choice of built-in themes enables the Story Editor to mimic the look of ink on paper, amber monochrome, classic system, or terminal with a single setting. Add, edit, and delete text efciently in the Story Editor, a separate word-processing view in InDesign CS. Customize the appearance of the Story Editor to suit you. As you make edits in the Story Editor, you can see them appear in your layout—making it easier to copyt text. Easily style text in the Story Editor using the Paragraph Styles and Character Styles palettes. 8 Control palette InDesign CS has adopted another popular PageMaker feature—the Control palette, which offers efcient new ways to work. Now, as an alternative to switching among the Character, Paragraph, Transform, Stroke, and Table palettes to style text, edit objects, and ne-tune tables, you can use the Control palette, which centralizes these options in one handy location. The Control palette is context-sensitive, so the options available depend on the object selected on the InDesign CS page: when the type tool is inserted in a text frame, text-formatting options appear; when an image or InDesign CS object is selected, transform, stroke, and other options are available; and when one or more table cells, rows, or columns are selected, table- specic options appear. The Control palette can oat over the page, or dock to the top or bottom of the window, depending on your preference. Rich Adobe PDF support Adobe InDesign CS ranks as one of the top Adobe PDF authoring tools available today. It can export Adobe PDF les in Adobe Acrobat 6.0 (PDF 1.5), Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4), or Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3) format. This capability is built into InDesign CS, so you no longer have to install a PostScript driver and Acrobat Dis- tiller to be able to export Adobe PDF les directly—a requirement of working with PageMaker. You can even export InDesign CS layers as Adobe PDF 1.5 layers, and then hide, show, and work with these layers in Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, the latest version of Acrobat for creative professionals. For example, if you often set up multiple design concepts on different InDesign layers, you can now export those concepts to a layered Adobe PDF le for review by colleagues and clients. InDesign CS also increases the output reliability of high-end PDF print workows with its ability to export ISO-standard PDF/X-1A les, which support high-resolution CMYK output, and PDF/X-3 les, which support CMYK and color-managed RGB work- ows. PDF Export Presets help you apply PDF export settings quickly and consistently. InDesign CS takes direct export of Adobe PDF les to a new level, delivering the tools you need to author and export interactive PDF les, which include bookmarks, hyperlinks, rollover buttons, and movie, ani- mation, and audio les. These interactive PDF tools expand your design toolkit, whether you’re producing interactive forms, putting together an advertising campaign with print, video, and audio options for client approval, authoring a PDF book with interactive learning content, or any number of other design uses. For example, imagine that you’re working on an integrated ad campaign with print, television, radio, and Web components. You create multiple campaign concepts for client review and feedback. With InDesign CS, you Let the Control palette oat over your workspace or dock it to the top or bottom of your screen. Use the Control palette to edit text, adjust graphics, or modify tables. Text options Graphics options Export InDesign CS layers in Adobe PDF 1.5 les. Then hide and show those layers in Acrobat 6.0. Create and nest bookmarks in InDesign CS les, and then export them to Adobe PDF les. 9 can lay out the different print ad concepts, incorporate links to the related video, audio, and Macromedia Flash content, add bookmarks for easy navigation, and export the whole thing as a single interactive PDF le for streamlined review with colleagues and the client. Step up to a new level of design productivity The question for many PageMaker users has been “Why switch when my product works?” The answer is simple: Adobe InDesign CS works signicantly better. InDesign combines the best aspects of PageMaker with productivity-enhancing features that take page design to a new level, so you can work smarter and faster than ever. Designed for the latest technologies, InDesign runs smoothly on Mac OS X, Windows 2000, and Windows XP systems. It’s packed with features that can handle any page design project from a one-page yer to a complex book with a detailed index, including multiple undo/redo, exible table cre- ation, character styles, and robust printing controls. It also expands your creative toolkit with editable drop shadows, gradients, arrowheads, stroke styles, and much more. Here is a sample of some of the top features in InDesign CS, many of which have long been on PageMaker users’ wish lists: Multiple undo/redo Undo or redo a virtually unlimited number of steps. Almost any action you can take can be undone (or redone), so you can experiment more freely and condently with your design ideas. Character styles Quickly apply consistent text formatting to short runs of text using character styles. Char- acter styles can include a rich set of text-formatting attributes. They can also be nested in paragraph styles to help you perform complex text formatting more efciently. Eyedropper tool Quickly sample the ll, stroke, character, paragraph, and transparency settings applied to one object and apply them to other objects with the Eyedropper tool. Use the new Button tool to create interactive rollover buttons. For example, draw a square button, and style it with a gradient, drop shadow, and formatted text. Then assign an action to it, such as jumping to a URL when it’s clicked in the nal exported Adobe PDF le. Save text-formatting options as character styles. Apply complex text formatting, such as this, in one step by nesting character styles in paragraph styles. In this example, one character style is applied to the number and hanging indent space and another character style to the opening words up to the colon. Both were applied with one click of the mouse because they are nested in the overall paragraph style applied to this text. 10 High-resolution preview of graphics Display low-resolution versions of images for faster performance. Then switch individual images to high-resolution display with a keyboard shortcut. Transparency Apply editable drop shadows, feathering, and other opacity settings to produce natural-look- ing transparent effects in InDesign. Maintain soft edges when placing transparent Photoshop les—a rst for desktop page layout applications. Adobe Indesign CS PageMaker Edition Adobe InDesign CS PageMaker Edition Stroke palette and the Stroke style editor Apply built-in strokes and arrowheads to lines. Also, create custom stroke styles with stripes, dots, or dashes, and apply them to underlines and strikethroughs, as well as to lines, paragraph rules, and more. Export sets of stroke styles for use in other documents, or to share with colleagues. Paragraph composer Automatically produce the best line breaks possible using the unique Paragraph Composer. OpenType support Quickly set basic fractions, discretionary ligatures, contextual alternates, and other type features when using OpenType® fonts in InDesign CS, one of the rst applications to offer built-in support for OpenType features. Additional typographical features Automatically create ligatures, hang punctuation, insert special charac- ters, identify missing fonts on-screen, and produce beautifully kerned text with optical kerning controls. Flexible gradients Dene linear or radial gradients. Then apply them to the stroke and ll of graphics and text—these items remain completely editable. Tables Create tables within InDesign CS in a few quick steps. Also import styled Microsoft Word and Excel tables directly, or turn tab-delimited text les into tables. Then rene how tables look: Set row height and column width, apply color lls and strokes to alternating rows, merge cells, create running headers and footers for linked tables, and more. Printing Print InDesign les reliably to PostScript Level 2, PostScript 3™, and non PostScript printing devices using an efcient printing interface that reects the input of thousands of print professionals. Dene Print Presets to automate how print options, trapping, transparency attener settings, and other options are applied. Also prevent costly mistakes before they appear on lm or on press by using the new Separations Preview and Flattener Preview palettes to evaluate plates and transparency attener settings onscreen before you print.
