1.4.2. According to structures and relation between clauses: There are 4 kinds of sentences as follow: ► Simple Sentences ► Compound Sentences ► Complex Sentences ► Compound - Complex Sentences 1.4.2.1. SIMPLE SENTENCES ► Definition: - A simple sentence is that includes a main clause and no dependent clauses, no conjunctions such as: and, but, or, etc. - It is used to describe an object, phenomenon, idea, question. * Sentence may be just a word: E.g: Melt! Common! * Normally, a simple sentence includes subject and predicate, in which the predicate is accompanied by the modifier. E.g: Ice melts. The ice melts quickly. * A sentence has a subject or predicate still be classified as a simple sentence. E.g: You can see the mountain and climb to the top. Peter and Sue visited the museum last Saturday. 1.4.2.2. COMPOUND SENTENCES ► Definition: - A compound sentence is composed of two or more main clauses but no subordinate clauses. Each clause is of equal importance and could stand alone. - They are created by several simple and connected by conjunctions such as and, but, or, etc ► E.g: The sun was setting in the west and the moon was just rising. There are 3 ways to join independent clauses to form a compound sentence: ► With a coordinator: - Notice that there is a comma (,) after the first independent clause. - Keep in your mind seven coordinators by the phrase FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. E.g: I wanted to come, but it was late. He went shopping, and his wife went to her classes ► With a conjunctive adverb: - The punctuation is special: a semicolon (;) after the first independent clause and a comma after the conjunctive adverb. - Common conjunctive adverbs are furthermore, besides, moreover, also; however, nevertheless, still, nonetheless; otherwise; consequently, therefore, thus, accordingly, hence. E.g: Therefore, he didn’t say a word. ► With a semicolon: - A semicolon can be used to join two independent clauses to form a compound sentence. - This occurs when the two independent clauses are closely related. - If they weren’t closely related, they would be written as two simple sentences, seprated by a period. E.g: I don't often go swimming; I prefer to play tennis. 1.4.2.3. COMPLEX SENTENCES ► Definition: - Acomplex sentence contains one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses. - In a complex sentence, one idea is generally more important than the other one. - The one important idea is placed in the main clause, and the less important idea is placed in the subordinate clause. - Clauses are connected by the dependent conjunctions such as which, who, although, despite, if, since, etc. ► E.g: Although my friend invited me to a party, but I do not want to go. 1.4.2.4. COMPOUND - COMPLEX SENTENCES: ► Definition: - A compound-complex sentence is a combination of two or more main clauses and one or more subordinate clauses. - These clauses is associated together by the independent conjunctions such as: but, and, so, etc, and the dependent conjunctions such as who, because, although, etc. ► E.g: John, who is a farmer, won the prize, and he took a short vacation. . clauses: There are 4 kinds of sentences as follow: ► Simple Sentences ► Compound Sentences ► Complex Sentences ► Compound - Complex Sentences 1.4.2.1.
